-And the hearts or the !eve 'are up -
And the Germans beginning ,to hop,
No one stops to ask of the others
How they voted in contests of yore,
For we're all British comrades NO
brothers
And we're Grit and Tory uo more."
"Wrapped in whatever comforting
.phrase one may choose for •this at•
titude, The Reformer believes it only
moans diel' Canada will be taken out
.•of.the war against Getinndy if Sit
Wilfrid Laurier wins, '-,S.itncoe Re
lamer (Liberal).
This is what The News -!record has
been urging 'right along, Those
who
•
want to: quit ; those who don't caro
who wins this war ; those who would
as soon as }tot see Gorman win, will
.vote for Laurier. A11 who 'Melly
'want to see Canada go on doing her
honest share in the present conflict
will support the ,Union Government,
« ..
The ▪ following, which appeared as a
leading editorial in Tuesday's Globe,
•should serve to open the eyes of
' ...skew who are hugging " to their
heats the hope that, if Sir Wilfrid
Laurier is returned to power some-
how- he .will see that the Canadians
at the front are given reinforcements
.and Canada will continue doing her
share. Both Liberal speakers at
Monday's mass meeting in Clinton
.hedged the question of military ser-
vice, each ,trying to give the impres-
aion that the 100,000 men would be
sent no matter who was premier,
The Globe has no such ilhtsion and
states the Matter clearly and honest-
- ljr -
"Up and down the country shrewd
jroiitical workers are carrying on a
,clever door-to-door campaign among
.former supporters of Sir Wilfrid,
Laurier. The electors are asked to
trust hint to do the right thing
should he be returned to power, He
is as eager to win ,the war, they are
told, as any other 'patriotic Cana-
diam, and will assuredly not stop the
despatch of reinforcements from Can-
ada to make good the losses of the
gallant lads who are fighting at the
• front,
The appeal is an utterly dishonest
one, and. those making it should be
asked To' state their authority.' Sir
Wilfrid Laurier has not given any
warrant in his published utterances-
lor the assertion that he would per-
senit the hundred thousand men to be
,saenvided •under the Military Service
-- feet; eor any part of them, to Pro-
ceed overseas. His manifesto states
'explicitly his psosition :
'As to the present Military Act,
my policy will be not to proceed
father under its provisions until
,the people have an opportunity to
leronounce upon it by way of a
xeterendum. I pledge myself fotth-
witb to submit the Act ,to the peo-
ple, ,and, with my followers, to
'carry out the wishes of tbeanajox-
i£y of the nation as thus express-
ed.' '
13y this declaration ,Sir Wilfrid
Laurier is pledged to suspend the
operation of ,the Military. Service Act
41 ever he has the power to. do so.
Not a man wound be raised or drill-
-ed under its provisions, and assured -
1y not a man raised and drilled un-
.der the law before his accession to
power would be despatched to France.
This complete paralysis of our mili-
tary
illtary effort would continue until al-
ter the promised reloreodtul, the re-
sult of whiclu would not be known un -
,til the campaigning season of 1918
was well under way.
...I -The political canvasser who, in
.face of Sir Wilfrid Laurier's express
•declaration of his intention to Pro-
ceed no further under the Act, as-
•serts.t]nat he would not stand in
the way di the immediate despatch
of reinforcements is accusing his
leader of insincerity and breach of
faith. IIe is practically intimating
that Sir 'Wilfritl's actions will bo
-directly the opposite of his declared
intentions, The Globe has 10) lulu-
•sinus about the matter, 11 believes
Celt Sir Wilfrid will do the thing he
says he will .do. ;Should be come to
power, not •a man raised or trained
4lnder the Military! Service Act .will
be sept' forward to reinforce our gal-
lant fellows at the frol-it till the re -
.s113 of the referendum is know'e,
More than that, Wore Sir Wilfrid
Laurier to come to power with' a
solid Quebec anti -conscription fol-
lowing behind him, he could not,
if he would, interpret his pledge as
permitting concurrence in any action
taken by the Unionist Government
•under, the Act, : Already the Nation-
alist wing of 'his supporters in Que-
bec demands an additional. pledge
that any men who may be scut across
the Atlantic under the operation of
the Act be ordered home until the
Tesult, of the prooneed referendum •,
aseknown.
It is because the (Boge believes Sir
'Wilfrid Laurier Will• unhesitatingly
pursue the course set 0101 to MS man-
ifesto, and, by doing sowill paralyze
(lauada's effort to provide reinforce-
ments in the supreme crisis .of_ the
war, that it asks . its readers who
favor the Military Service Act to
•vote against the candidates of Sir
Wllfrid Leutiet. N1) man in this
"contest can honestly call himself a
Laurier supporter while refusing to
:accept the mast iinpotelant planet of
Sir Wilfrid's platform -the suspension
•'of the Misiterq. Service Act, There
is a great teal of manoeuvring on

Dear Uncle Tont,-I ant writing you
early this year to say that I want
you and my old friend, "Win Shep-
pard," to get up another Big Enter-
tainment before Xmas, and make the
afternoon show free for all the
kids of the Public school and all the
kide that expect to go when they
get bigger and all their grandmoth-
ers, but charge everyone who goes
for the evening entertainment and
use the proceeds for a -free show to
my old friends down at the Ilouse
of Refuge and also try and give a
donation to the Huron County l hil-
dren's Aid Society, Ask that pretty
bunch of High school kids who. sang
last year to singe again and sell
tickets. I am sure everyone will
buy a ticket for a good show and a
good cause. I am writing to a lot
of people down there to donate some
presents to give away. ..If they re-
spond to niy call try and make 25
percent, of the tickets sold good for
a present', I ant writing Illy old
college churn, Gal Holloway, to save
a tori of coal for one'prize and Jim
Ford for a bag of potatoes and Billy.
Johnson fur a bag of flour, so the
prizes will be useful. Trusting you
will get busy on this entertainment,
