I ,. "Sunday, July 22, 1017
Dear Father,—Just received your
most welcome and long looked for
letter a few nights ago and must
say I was indeed pleased, to hear
from you again and to know you are
all well at home. • Your letter just
took a little over a month and a
half to come, which I think is about
the average time at present. I had
a letter from Toronto last Mai/eh
"which was mailed in December, it
just took it three months and. two
-days to come, so you can see the
.snail trains and boats are very er-
ratic out in this co0ntryy. We are
having terribly hot weather here
...paw. We are right into the middle
.of summer. The thermometer regis-
ters between 04 and 104 every day
'now and you certainly feel the heat
:as the weather is so dry. We have
started taking quinine again this
summer, just twice a week now, and
=ft is certainly as vile as ever. I will
be glad to get away from this coun-
try even if it is only for ;that reas-
on, We have our lawn tennis court
PTE. OHAS, E. LAVIS
;fixed up again and we often spend a
few pleasant hours playing, even if
at is in the hot sun. I used • to get up
.about four o'clock in the morning
and play before breakfast, but lately
I have lost all ambition for such.
We are quite close to the Bay, and
;go down bathing nearly every day.
!Phe water is quite warm and is ter-
ribly salty as well as dirty, I was
"put for a holiday about a week ago,
so several of us got together and hir-
',ed a sail boat for the afternoon and
sailed_aeross the bay to a point
;called Kara Bourna. We landed al -
night and, then we walked across the
,point and had a bath in the Aegean
Sea. I have bathed. -in numerous
. waters since leaving home. The tem-
fperature here just a couple of days
.ago was 102 degrees in the shade and
0 degrees in the sun so you can
imagine how warmit is. Today is
;just nice as there is a nice breeze
blowing and it looks as it it might
rain. but I expect it will blow over_
as' this is our dry season.' The
Greeks have just finished cutting
their spring wheat about a month
ago.. They let it stand until half of
it fell down and then they started
mowing it with a very small scythe,
.about the size of a corn scythe, then
they bound .it tip by hand, loaded it
-on their little donkeys until all you
-could see of the donkey was his eyes
:and ears. When they got it .home
-they stacked it. Now they are
threshing it. This is the way they
do it., First of all they spread it all
out on the ground, 00- course the
ground is quite hard, drys and level,
then they get their oxen and yoke
them to a small stone -boat and the
Greek women climb on and ride
around on this boat for several days,
so between the oxen tramping on it
and the stone -boat sliding around, it
grinds everything up pretty well, ev-
en the straw. Then they. get their
.forks and shake it up and take away
.all the coarse straw and then put
the chaff, the wheat and a large part
of the soil in bags and then put it
ro igh the fainting mill. it is car-
- ' tailk no wonder the natives have
'brown bread, There is'a1t American
missionary here 'olid he often comes
over, and visits tite liospital and tells
its• all about this place when he first
name here. We have a splendid view
of Mount Olympus, the home of the
clods, from here and on a clear day
w clad
show peak quite
we can sec the n ytitc
plainly and 11 does loots tdireslting.
About the hardest thing to get but
here is a good drink of ice eold wat-
er. a 1.11 the drinking water which we
' get here has to be boiled and owing
to such hot weather it never gets a
oiiilatcc to cool of? properly. I ant
enclosing a small snap which I had
take:t some time ago, T have lots
10010 but stn unable to send them
owing to regulations, Well, fattier.,
