WESTERN CROP MUST BE SAVED
.I;D
Insistent Call for Men From. Prairie
Wheat Fields.
The crop in Western Canada Is ra-
pidly approaching the harvest stage,
In some places, indeed, cutting hal
commenced already. But the insist-
ent call for harvest help will be gen-
eral throughout Manitoba, Saskatche-
wan and Alberta within the next few
days.
Save the crop! is' the urgent appeal
from the leaders in all the Allied
countries: In Canada, the young men
'of 'adventurous tendencies in the
towns and villages of Ontario, who
have been unable to- go to the
trenches, will be `contributing ,a very.
:real service to the cause by helping
grain growers of the Prairie Pro -
vines gather the wheat upon which
so much of the success of war opera
"tions depends.
The rates to the west are low, and'
the wages, because of the high level of
the price of'wheat, are certain to be
goocl, 15 not high. Moreover, there is
always the possibility that the har-
vester, "doing his bit," may locate a
farm in the west and settle perman-
ently there.
`To many young men and those more
mature, in every small town in On-
tario, including our own, this appears
as a great opportunity to serve the
country in a practical way. A. pleas-
.... ant, long-distance train journey, and
it visit to the invigorating west, are
added attractions. But the crop must
be saved!

A MARKED CONTRAST.
Between British and German Head-
' quarters in France.
An American arriving in London af-
ter a visit to British headquarters in
France spoke of the contrast between
the latter and. German headquarters,
where, during the earlier stages of the
war, he happened to find himself.
"The contrast," he said, "is almost
beyond • description. At the German
front, when I was there, it was one in-
cessant business of heel -clicks and
sword -clanks ! No relaxation of any
kind, ramrod stiffness everywhere and
always a sense of restriction, as
though you were stint up in an ice -
chest 1
"A short time ago I had the pleas-
ure of visiting the British general
headquarters. 'G. H. Q. is ''absolutely
a .jolly place. No fiap, no side, no heel -
clicks, and never a sign of a refrig-
erator machine to be seen anywhere
throughout the whole show. Sir Daug-
las Haig was a human man, and no
more.
"Genial, friendly, with a handshake
that strikes a glow into you, blue eyes
full of good humor and fun, as keen to
see a joke as to fix tip a tactical point,
a ready, and fluent tongue, and away
With him that, after five minutes in
his company, makes you feel that you
have known him as a real friend for
years'.' Ile is iferfectly frank and as-
tonishingly modest.
"Naturally, his 'boys,' as the staff is
Familiarly known, love- him, and would
waltz through Hades gladly enough
for Hint. They are ail sorts and sizes,
and all ages; but they are all tarred
with the same brush of good nature,
good fellowship and brotherliness. I

Pure blood is the body's first line of
defense against disease. Strong, heal-
thy blood neutralizes the poispna of in-
vading germs, or destroy the germs
tliemsalves. That is why many people
exposed to disease do not contract it.
Those whose blood is weak and wa-
tery and therefore lacking in defen-
sive power are most liable to infec-
tion. Everybody may observe ' that
healthy, red-blooded people are fess
liable to colds and the 'grippe, than
pale, bloodless people. It is the
bloodless people who tire easily, who
are short of breath at slight exertion,
who have poor appetites, and who
wake up in the morning as tired as
when they went to bed. While women
and girls chiefly suffer from bloodless-
ness the trouble also affects both boys
and men. It simply affects girls and
women to a greater extent because
there is a greater demand upon their
blood supply.
To renew and build up the blood
there is no remedy can equal Dr. Wil-
liams' Pink Pills. They tone up the
entire system, make the blood •rich
and red, feed and strengthen starving
nerves, increase the appetite, put col-
or in the cheeks, give refreshing sleep
and drive away that unnatural tired
feeling. Plenty of sunlight and whole-
some food will do the rest.
You can get Dr. Williams' Pink Pills

AIR PREPAREDNESS.
Before -the -War Progress in Aviation
Made by European Nations.
Right from the beginning the aerial
scientists perceived the value of the
airplane as a war asset, Five years
ago, when the nations wore not dream-
ing of the proximity of the World
War -with the exception of Germany
-the nations began equipping them-
selves with the aircraft for military
purposes. In 1913 the nations of
Europe and Asia were stocking up,
while the United States looked on.
France had something like 800 air-
planes and two dozen dirigibles. It
ranged on down the line to Japan,
with fifty airplanes and half a dozen
dirigibles,
Cross-oountry flying was being popu-
larized just before the war broke out.
Some of the 'flights•in 1918 included
trips between Petrograd and Paris;.
many flights between Paris and Lon-
don, a dozen flights across the Sahara
Desert. France was carrying maihby
airplanes. It was estimated that some
200,000 passengers were carried in
flights monthly.
The advance from 1908 to 1918 -half
the decade in which the airplane has
made its wonderful advance -brought
nut some of the following records:
Speed, 126 miles an hour.
Endurance, fourteen no -stop hours.
Attitude, 21,000 feet.
Longest tours, Paris to Petrograd
and back, and Paris to Cairo.
Longest flights over water, across
Mediterranean ,and Baltic Seas and
American Great Lakes,
Longest one -day trijl, Berlin to Paris
There were 6,000 licensed aviators
in Europe, of which France had 2,000
and England 700, with 7,000 students
in military aviation schools. The pre-
paredness of France in aviation in
years to come will be regarded equally
ea important in turning back the
Hun in the memorable "On -to -Paris"
dash of 1914 as the quick mobilization
of French artillery and infantry be-
fore Von Kluck's right wing.
A FISH THAT CAN CLIMB.

Trees as High as Thirty Feet.
There is only one kind of fish in
the world that can climb a tree. It is
a "goby," and is found in great num-
hers on the Island of Ceram, in the
Dutch East Indies.
Along the sea beaches of that is-
land, close to the water's edge, grow
huge trees which are in themselves
odd enough, inasmuch as the roots
start out of the trunk eight or ten feet
above the ground and grow downwaid
to meet the marshy soil in the form
of ,flying buttresses.
Tho gobios which ingest the shal-
lows along shore, malting burrows in
the muddy bottom for refuge against
enemies; are quite at home out of the

A thrush sings in an oak tree, and

Stone crosses take no notice -but the
little wooden ones
Are thrilling every minute to the mu-

Upstanding :if attention they face the.

In apple-pie alinement like Guardsmen

But Tombstones are Civilians who loll

At every crazy angle and stage of

For them the Broken Column -in its

The tawdry tinsel garland safeguard-

CHOLERA 'INFANTUM
Cholera Infantum is one of the fatal
ailments of childhood. It is a trouble
that comes on suddenly, especially
during the summer months and unless
prompt action is taken the little one
may soon be beyond aid. Baby's 'Own
Tablets are an ideal medicine in ward-
ing off this trouble. They regulate
the bowels and sweeten the stomach
and -thus prevent all the dreaded
stomach complaints. Concerning them
Mrs, Fred Rose, South Bay, Ont.,
says: "I feel Baby's Own Tablets sav-
ed the life of our baby when she had
cholera infantum and I would not be
without them." The Tablets are sold
by medicine dealers or by mail at 25
cents a box from the Dr. Williams
Medicine Co., Brockville, Ont.

TURKEY'S SHINING STONE.
Prophetic Piece of Marble Keeps Otto-
mans Confident of Vigtory.
Perhaps the most remarkable of all
the Constantinople "prophecies," re-
cently discussed, is connected with
the "Shining Stone" in the Mosque of
St. Sophia, This is a slab of trans-
lucent marble, brought from Persia,
which has been fixed in the west side
of the gallery.
It emits rays of dazzling brilliancy
during times of national prosperity or
religious triumphs of Islam, but be-
comes black and opaque, however
cloudless the skies, when disaster
threatens the Ottoman Empire or the
faith.
It has never hitherto been seen
darkened, though the Slyitan's armies
have frequently been defeated and
the power of Islam --seemed to suffer
eclipse. Thus this prophetic stone
proves to believing Moslems that,
however fate may frown in the pres-
ent war, the real -victory remains with
them.
If Stomach Hurts
Drink Hot Water
•
"If dyspeptics, sufferers from gas,
wind or flatulence, stomach acidity or
sourness, gastric catarrh, heartburn,
eta, would . take a teaspoonful of pure
bisurated magnesia in half a glass of
hot water immediately after eating,
they would soon forget they were ever
afflicted with stomach trodble, and doc-
tors would have to Iook elsewhere for
patients," In explanation of these
words a well known New York• pilysi-
clan stated that most forms of stomach
trouble, are due to stomach acidity and
fermentation of the food contents of the
stomach combined with an insufflclent
blood supply to the stomach. clot wa-
ter Increases the blood supply and bistu'-
ated magnesia instantly neutralizes the
excessive stomachacid and stops food
fermentation, the combination of the w
two, therefore, being marvelously sec-
!
ceseful and decided y preferable to the
use of artificial digestants, stimulants
or:medicines for indigestion.
