Practical

An unusual and yet practical novel-
ty"'is shown in the romper dress here
illustrated. Itis on the order of the
envelope style of chemise except that
the envelope section fastens under the
dress at the top of the hem and does
not take away from the dress effect.

WHEN YOUR COLOR FADES
When a girl—or a woman -finds her
color fading, when her cheelcs and lips
grow pale, and she gets short of breath
easily and her heart palpitates after
slight exertion, or under the least ex-
citement, it means that she is suffer-
ing from anaemia—thin, watery blood.
Headache and backache frequently
itccompany this condition, and ner-
vousness is often present. ^•
The remedy for this condition is to
build up the blood, and for this pur-
pose there is no medicine can equal
Dr. Williams'. Pink Pills. They build
up and renew the blood, bring bright -
nese to the eyes, color to the cheeks,
and a general feeling of renewed
healtjl and energy. The only other
treatment needed is plenty of sunlight,
moderate exercise and good, plain
food. The girl ter woman who gives
this treatment a _
fair trial will soon
find herself enjoying perfect health.
You can get Dr. Williams' Pink Pills

SPEED UP FREIGHT MOVEMENT
In order to facilitate train move-
ments and release passenger train
crews for other work, the railways of
the United States are making drastic
reductions compared to which those in
Canada early this year appear mild.
Thus, for instance, the Pennsylvania
Railroad merely on its lines east of
Pittsburg has eliminated no less than
102 trains, or more than double tile
number taken off the whole of the
Canadian railways. This will cut
down the passenger movement by an
amount equivalent to 2,268,000 train
miles per annum or over 6,500 train
miles every week day. A number of
paring. cars, restaurant cars and ob-
servatlbn cars are being discontinued.
The Boston and Maine has taken off
no less than 255 trains, or more than
five tines the number taken off in
Canada, saving approximately 41,000
train miles per weak. Strenuous ef-
forts are also being made to increase
the carload and to impress on mer-
chants the importance of rapid un-
loading so that the freight equipment
shall he kept busy to its utmost ca-
pacity, and terminals should be kept
clear, The American railroads realize
that speed in freight movement is one
of the greatest aids they can give to
help win the war and according to all
reports are achieving remarkable re-
sults. It is up to Canadians to see
that Canada is not left behind in this
patriotic race.
TO WRITE WITH THE KNEES.
A Device to Enable Soldiers Who Have
Lost Both Arms to Write.
A boon for soldiers who have lost
both arms is described by Dr. Arthur
T. Blachly of Portland, U.S.A. It is
an apparatus by which they can write
with their knees after a little practice.

Rural Church and the Farm;"
A great need of the country is di-
version. People who handle the
plough need to have something to
think about. They have many ,hours
to think. That he may not be a pes-
simist or a false philosopher, that he
may not con over evil thoughts and
fill his mind with wrong and inhuman
sentiments is for the Church to have
a care. The pulpit must not think it
beneath its dignity to organize play
festivals, and the minister must not
be ashamed to wear motley, if by so
doing, he can bring a better and 'a
nobler spirit into the countryside. The
tedium of country life is unsocial. It
is against the welfare of the State. It
is bad for the heart and fr.: the soul.
But She .Liked It!
Very strong peppermints are gr'and-
father's favorite confection. One
day, he gave one to four-year-old Mar-
jorie, and waited slyly to see what she
would do when she should discover the
pungent flavor of the candy. A few
minutes later he saw her take the
partly eaten peppermint from her
mouth and place it on a table beside an
open window.
"What's the matter?" he asked.
"Don't you like the candy?"
"Oh, yes," replied Marjorie, "I like
it, but I thought I'd let it cool for a
little while."
SUMMER HEAT
HARD ON BABY
No season of the year is so danger-
ous to the life of little ones as is the
summer. Tho excessiye heat throws
the little stomach out of order so
quickly that unless prompt aid is at
hand the baby may be beyond all
human help before the mother realizes
he is ill. Summer is the season when
diarrhoea, cholera infantum, dysentry
and colic are most prevalent. Any one
of these troubles may prove deadly if
not promptly treated. During the

THE PENALTY OF LIBERTY.
Severe Discipline Practised by the
Mother of Ruskin.
In the matter 'of discipline John
Ruskin's mother was a Spencerian be-
fore Spencer. "Let your penalties,"
says that austere philosopher, "be
like the penalties inflicted by inani-
mate nature, . inevitable. The hot
cinder burns a child the first time he
seizes it; it burns him the second time;
it burns him every time; and he very
soon learns not to touch the hot cin -
dor," That was Mrs, Ruskin's method.
To illustrate her way of teaching les-
sons, Ruskin used to tell the follow-
ing incident of his early childhood,
which his mother wos fond of relat-
ing.
"One evening, when I was yet in my
nurse's arms, I wanted to -touch the tea
urn, which was boiling merrily. It
was an early taste for bronzes, I sup-
pose; but I was resolute about it, My
mother bade me keep my fingers back;
I insisted on putting them forward. My
nurse would have taken me away from

HOW TO PREVENT
ACID STOMACHS AND
FOOD FERMENTATION
By a Storltaoh Snocialist.
As a specialist who has spent many
years in the study and treatment of
stomach troubles, I have been forced to
the conclusion that most neonle who
complain of eta -mach trouble possess
stomachs that are absolutely healthy
and normal. The real trouble, that
which causes all the pain and difficulty,
is acid in the stomach, usually clue to,
or aggravated by, food fermentation.
Acid irritates the delicate lining of the
sternal: and rood fermentation causes
wind which distends the stomach ab-
normally, causing that full bloated ford-
ing. . Thus boot acid and fermentation
interfere with and retard the process of
digestion. The stomach is usually
healthy and normal, but irritated al-
most past endurance by these foreign
elements—acid and wind, In all such.
oases—and they comprise over 90 per
cent. of all stomach difficulties—the first
and only step necessary Is to neutralize
the acid and stop the fermentation by
taking in a little wlu•nt or cold water
immediately alter eating, from one to
two teaspoonfuls of bisurated magnesia.
which is doubtlees the best and only
really effective antacid and food eorree-
tive known. The aold will be neutralized
and the fermentation stopped almost in-
stantly, and your stomach will at once
proceed to digest the food in a healthy,
normal manner. Be sure to anis your
druggist for the bisurated magnesia, as
I have found other Torras utterly lacking
in its peculiarly valuable properties,—

HOW THE DEAF "HEAR" MUSIC:
Music is an Essential Factor in Train-
ing of 111e Deaf.
Music, declares the head of an insti-
tutipn for the care of deaf and crumb
children, is more essential in the edu-
cation of the deaf than it is in the
training of the hearing child.
In this institution the classrooms
are provided with pianos, around
which the children gather between re-
citations.
"When the teacher plays an excit-
ing feeling conies up through the
floor," is the way one deaf boy de-
scribes it.
Others, when asked to explain their
sensations, said: "I feel it in my tem-
ples and in my legs." "I feel it
through my whole body," and "I feel
it in my chest and lungs."
The children "hear" more distinctly
when they are allowed to. place their
elbows on the -piano.
