Scab Control

I do not believe that 'apple growers
ai:e using the intelligeuce in' regard
to spraying and le regard to im-
proving certain lines:oe their work
drat they should, You aro getting
lath a rue, and not ' thinking over
spltte el the essentials, sufficiently,
There are atnumber, of splendid de-
monstratiotf orchards In. this Prove'

et is more for experiment imposes—
where splendid results are being , at-
tained, and there are a great num-
ber of fruit growers wlio never
near these orchards to sec these re -
stilts and find out the methods used.
Wherever there is a good sprayer,
whys not' go and sec how that man
docs .it 9
Sometimes,happened i
as to
pP n several
districts this past year, and also a
few years ago in Norfolk County, the
period elapsing between the spray
just before the bloom, and the one
just after the bloom falls, is a .long
one, anti so wet that the mixture
becomes washed off and cannot , pro -
teed; the part of the flower that later
forms the. fruit. In such case, it will
be absolutely necessary to give an
intermediate spray, say ten or
twelve days after the one just before
bloom. In this application the poison
should be omitted and the, dime -sul-
phur used at the strength of ono
gallon commercial to thirty or thir-
ty-three gallons water.
Sometimes all of June -is wet. In
that case, there should be an appli-
cation .about two weeks atter the
codling moth spray; Use lime-sul-
pfiur one gallon to Sorry gallons
water. Poison may be omitted.
If an autumn spray is given to
ward off late attacks of scab and
sooty fungus, it should, be not later
than August 15th, otherwise the
fruit would be stained at picking
time. Use lime -sulphur alone, one
gallon to forty gallons water.
The failure of .growers to control
scab this 'past year may be traced to
the following causes :
1. Wet weather made the ground
so soft in spring that many had to
omit either the spray before bloom
or the one after bloom, Tlfe omis-
sion of either meant scabby fruit.
Spraying in dry? weather was use-
Iess.
2. litany men did not try to spray
promptly at the tithes indicated in
tie spray calendar. If they had
known the life history of the scab
disease they would have known that
this would mean failure in a wet
spring. I wish every man would
tacit one of the new spray calendars
up in his fruit shed, and think it ov-
er. I have varied it a little this
year, and have added some things
so that it will make cleater certain
points. For a general reference that
it the best thing eve can give you.
3. More than half, probably three-
fourths of the apple growers do not
spray nearly heavily enough. It tat— the interval then was too long and
es time and more material to wet a the rains too frequent and heavy.

set at right angle, good those and a
tree thoroughly, but it more than
repays for all expense. It is the on-
ly kind of spraying that will give
nosey perfect results. Good nozzles,
good working machine are necessary
for good spraying. A large, well -
pruned tree of thfrtyflve years of
age that had much bloom on it, can-
not be well sprayed' with less than
ten gallons of liquid,
4. In some districts, sucli as
Prince Edward County, an intermed-

tween the opening and falling of the
blossoms, was necessary on mos%
varieties to give clean fruit, 'because

LFT, think of the time the Ford saves a busy farmer in hauling
at, ," L milk to 'the cheese factory—vegetables, butter ,eggs and
poultry to market—fruit to the railway station, One fruit grower,
last season, made four trips a day to the railway station, a total of
144 miles and carried as high as 72 crates of 11 quarts each on a trip. He
couldn't have made more than one 36 mile trip a day with a team.
The Ford soon pays for itself in the time it saves the farmer. With help
so scarce, every farmer needs to make use of every precious minute of his time,
To him the Ford car is a real necessity. Indeed, some farmers tell us that it is
doubtful if they could carry on their farm work under present labor conditions
if it wasn't for'tlhe time the Fora saves them.
No farmer need be without a ?ord. In fact, the average farmer could
.afford one if it were double the price. It is as easy to drive as a horse, three
times as fast, and costs less per mild to run. Why not order one today?
