A STATE'S BUTCHER SHOPS.
New Zealand Opens Two in Auckland
.As An Experiment.
The New Zealand government has
(recently opened two butcher shops
'in Auckland in order to keep the re-
tail price of ;neat down to the lowest
possible minimum, and also to make
the experiment as to whether under a
'stricter system of management the
(increases in the price of meat an-
nounced by the butchers are justified.
The butchers are•given the gption of
drawing on the Imperial Govern-
ment's supplies. The two freezing
companies in the Auckland district
(►•will supply meat to them during al-
ternate months at bare cost price,
,without trying' to make any profit on
the transaction. The Government re-

FERTILIZERS AT SI4.ALL COST.
Compost Heap of Great Value to the
Gfardepa,
,fertility of the Pell is of prime im-
portance, and fortunately all soils
may be made fertile, Where it le pop-
sillier a green cover crop of clover, al-
falfa, peas or beans may be ploughed
lander with beneficial resulte. !Phis ls.
especially valuable for heavy clay,
soils that need the addition of hulnus.
Never burn your leavee, er anything
for that'latter, if you have a garden.
All of it, unless it is bones, which may
be burned, may be utilized more ef-
fectively ae a compost than as ashes,
which are difficult to handle and a
large portion of which iia likely to
escape. Of course, if you have wood
ashes from the fireplace, save them
carefully and use them where they
will do the most good.
In some part of your ground start a
compost heap, or, bettor, a pit. Into
it pilt everything that will decaya'nd
form vegetable food. All the trim-
mings and clippings from garden and
lawn, leaves, even garbage, may be
brought together, and by use of lime
kept from being an offence while it is
undergoing the changes that will make
It available for the garden.
One of the very best of all mater-
ials for use in the garden is sod,
Whenever you have a little time, dig
up a few -sods in out of the way cor-
ners and' put them away. They have
stored up ,in themthe food of .other
years and as they mellow and mix
with the soil they will be of the ut-
most value, They are placed in alter-
nate layers with barnyard manure,
and will, when turned from time to
time and thoroughly mixed so as to
form one substance, be ideal for use
in the„flower or vegetable borders.
In well ordered old gardens there is
always a compost heap, hidden away
behind evergreens or in some out of
the way place, yet convenient of ac-
cess. If you are beginning your gar-
den this year begin your compost heap
and keep it going as long as you have
a garden. You will be surprised' to
find how may things can go into it
with advantage.
PERFECT HEALTH
DUE TO THE BLOOD
No Girl or Woman Need Be Con-
stantly Ailing and
Unhappy.
Nature intended every girl and every
woman to be happy, attractive, active
and healthy. Yet too many of them
find .their lives saddened by suffering-
nearly always because their blood is to
blame. All those unhappy girls and
women with colorless oheeks, dull
skins and sunken, lusterless eyes,, are
in this condition because they have not
enough blood, red blood in their veins
to keep them well and in the churn of
health. They suffer frd•m depressing
weariness and periodical headaches.
Dark lines form under their eyes, their
heart pakbitates violently '=after the
slightest exertion, and they are often
attacked with fainting • spells. These
are only a few of the miseries of blood-
lessness. Nothing can secure girls and
women from the inevitable decline
that follows anaemia except a gener-
ous supply of new, rich, red blood, and
;nothing has ever proved so successful
in creating red, good blood as Dr. Wits
hams Pins;. Pills for Pale People.
Thousands and thousands of girls and
women owe their good health and
charming complexion to the use of this
medicine. Here is one example of its
power to cure. Nll.ss Dorina Bastien,
St, Jerome, Que„ says: "For over a
year my health was gradually failing,
my blood had seemed almost to have
turned to water, my cheeks were pale,
my lips bloodless, -and the slightest
exertion left me breathless. I suffered
frequently boon severe beadaches, my
appetite fatted, and my friends feared
I was going into consumption. I had
been doctoring but did not derive any
benefit, and finally I liad to give up
my work and return home. It was at
this stage that a friend brought me a
box of Dr. Williams' Pink. Pills and
urged me to try them, By the time
the box was used I thought they were
helping me, and decided to continue
using the pills, I took a half dozen
boxes more, when my strength had
completely returned, lay appetite was
restored, my color returned, headaches
had disappeared and I was feehing'bet-
ter than I had been for years, I would
urge every weak and ailing girl to give
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills a fair trial."
These pills are sold by all medicine
dealers or may be had by mail at 50
cents a box or six boxes for $2,50 from

IAN HAY'S MILITARY CROSS.
Gallant Deed Which Earned For Him
the Deserved Decoration.
Nearly, every one has either heard
Captain Ian Hay Berth, author of
"The First Hundred Thousand" and•
"Getting Together," or has heard /of
him; a great many people know that
he was decorated with the Military
Cross, but owing to the Captain's
silence on his own deeds few of his
many friends know --the occasion of
the honor.
It was at the battle of Loos, in Sep-
tember, 1915, that Captain Beith's
regiment, the Tenth .Argyll and Suth-
erland Highlanders, was holdings un-
der a terrific shell fire a hard-won
position on the third line of German
trenches. All but four of the officers
had -been killed or wounded, and fin-
ally, when the enemy had surrounded
the gallant little company on three
sides the order was given to fall back.
Captain Beith, with four of his men,
was left to man a machine gun 'to
cover the retirement of the regiment.
One by one the men with Captain
Beith fell under fire, and finally the
Captain was left alone.
It is almost absolutely necessary fo
two or more men to operate a machin
gun, but Captain Beith stuck at it
alone. Then, before his ammunition
was exhausted, the gun jammed and
became useless. Nothing remained,
therefore, for him to do but retire, and
under heavy fire he rejoined his
troops. Some few weeks later, to his
great surprise, Captain Beith receiv,ed
his decoration.

CURIOSITIES OF TAXATION
Boots and Shoes In Holland Were
Taxed According to Size.
The archives of Holland contain or-
dinances whish may well be regarded
as curiosities of taxation. In. the year
1666 there was a tax imposed on all
passengers traveling in Holland by
land or water. In 1791 this tax •was
still in force. In 1674 a duty of five
cents was levied mi each person who
entered a tavern before noon. Per -
sone who assembled in a private house
after three o'oloock In the afternoon for
the purpose of amusing themselves
had each to pay a certain sans, and
these who entered a place of enter-
tainment were likewise taxed. There
was a duty on marriages and deaths.
The amount of the tax varied aoeord-
ing to the social position of the parties,
while in the case of a person buried
outside of the district in which he lived
the amount payable by his exeoutor
was doubled.
But the most curious tax of all was
one imposed in 1674 on boots and
shoes. In order to prevent the impost
from being evaded, each of those ar-
ticles so essential to huniau comfort
had to be convspicuously marked on the
upper loather with the stamp of the
marcor, and alto with that of the tax.
Ing officer. The sum to be paid was
regulated by the size of the boot or
shoe, so, apart from the question of
beauty, in those days it was a real ad-
vantage to have a small foot. It saved
expense,
