"Tho principal reason given is the
difficulty '01 obtaining transporta-
tion," was the reply, "As a natter
of fact it is said that there was more
coal mined in March of this year
than during any March for many
years but owing- to sliortage of

repair. The tr. Tl a repair shops. of tkio
railway companies are full of roll-
ing stock wlticli for the time beiog
cannot roll for lack of repairs and
eller° aro not enough mon, to be '-gdie
to put thopi into shape again,"
It looks as if the reason back of
all was the war, after all. Many
-menRave gone to the front and no
doubt many more whoformerly were
employedin the repair shops of the
railways are now working in the
munition factories. •
'Should. presentconditions prevail
for anylength er time arrangements
must be- made for burning less coal
next winter.
Coal is not by any moans the only
staple which is on the up grade,
Jlowever. •Flour is another staple
which is mounting in price until it
begins• to look as if bread, the corn-
rneeest article of diet, would soon.
be considered a'luxury.,
` Bread advanced in Clinton on Sat-
. ` 'nrday last to ten cents, that is ten
cents for a pound and a half loaf.
Several of the surrounding towns'
had advanced the price a week or
1.'wo"previously.
"We cannot buy flour today and
- make bread •at any profit for ten
cents," remarked one otc the Clinton
dealers. "While bread has not quite
doubled in price flour has threbled in
'the past thirty months."
"Do you see any solution ?" an-
other dealer was asked, "Well," he
remarked,. "tlie probability is that
before the year is out you will not
be allowed to buy as muck • bread
as • you wish, we'll sell.. it . on the
basis of one• loaf to a family, or
soneething `like that."
Why -is The .News -Record, like an
old raven, croaking over these things,
just to harrow, up people's - feel-
ings and make them unhappy ? Not
a;bit of it. "This is no time for un-
happiness, for discouragement or for
whining. It is a time for action and
everybody can do something useful.
Canadians, while industrious and
thrifty inmany ways, have not learn-
, 0ed the, art of saving every scrap and
making every cent tell. So plentiful
;rel; have been our harvests , as a rule
that wo have grown somewhat pro-
digal of food. But, just now the
woman who . in her kitchen sees that
every ounce of food stuff is utilized
and made to do its utmost in the
,nurishing of her family is performing
an important patriotic a'ot.
In times of peace aiid plenty the
'householder who wastes his substance
fie his own worst enemy,. ret{Irding
his own' race to the goal of a .corn-
petance,. but in war time andwhen
the world is' facing a serious food
shortage, such an one becomes a pub-
lic menace.
In'Germauy a food controller has
regulated the diet of the people for
many months ; • Great Britain has re-
cently appointed a food controller
and it is gnite, possible that some-
thing of t11e kindwill have (o be
•lone in Canada. But the Ca'itadian
people, if they will, can put off such
a contingency indefinitely,
Let's go systematically . about con-
serving our -resources, •
, We may. learn lessons of thrift
:luring the next couple or three years
which will lay the foundation for
treat national wealth in .the future,
lbesldes helbing materially to stave
off world -hunger.

miles farther into the Hun lines
when we carte out than when we
went in, and the intervening ground
was hammered to pieces by our
artillery and it was pretty hard
finding your way especially at-
