THE SPRING SHOW.
Thursday last was the fourteenth
Huron Spring Stool: Show day in
Clinton. •
It wasn't a pleasant day. •rzldeed,
the "Oddest Inhabitant" can hardly
remember when we did have nice
weather for the Show. On this oc-
casion the rain began to come - down
about nine -thirty and kept coming
pretty steadilp all day long.
• However, the directors are accus-
tomed to that sqrt of weather. No
inatter how fine tee day before or
the .clay after may be, 'tis aiwayis
disagreeable on Show day. This Sear
they rmayl congratulate . themselves
that the next day would have been
worse.

by any means spoils the Show, how-

WIN-TIIE-WAR PRODUCTION CLUB
To the Men of Clinton
The shortege of food throughout
the world will be so great -next year
as to threaten whole nations with
famine. Argentina, usually the larg-
est exporter of wheat and beef in
the world has, we are told, an utter
failure of crop and pasturage and
will need help rather thanlend it.
Central Europe, now on seige ra-
tions, will fare worse nest . year.
Britain, now on limited food supply;
is short of agricultural labor. The
United States, having . entered the
war, . will consume more and pro-
duce less. Where is the world's food
to come from ? Where will there be
a surplus to makeup for these The shor-
tagesthreat
gtret of famine is
something more awful than" a night-
mare ; it seems likely to be realized:
Our Govermnents are calling for
national service and the only nation-
al service most of us can render, and
it is the greatest service any man
can, render his countryjust now, is
to get out upon the land and sow
and reap ; do our best and leave
the resta kind Providence, There
d Pr vidence er
e
is abundance land o of la d to be sown if
the help • is only given and tbo far-
mers lead the way.
The Clinton Board of Trade has
appointed a committee to enlist
every willing, patriotic man. to "(lo
something towards helping to in-
crease the food production in this
vicinity. Already a number have
signed up, offering their services in
Seed time andharvest, and theyare
in earnest about it. If the farmers.
will accept such help as, we can glee
them) it is our plain duty to go out
and help, Some eau promise a day
or two, some a weep, some mere :
surely tlieie• is not an able-bodied
man in Clinton who will refuse to
help, There is' an enlistment roll at
the town clerk's office go there and.
enrol for such service and for as much
time as you can give. We hope that
those farmers who can do so will
avail themselves of our offer. Valess
they do we can" do little.
If fanners needing help will apply
at the Clerk's office their wants will
be metas nearly as our resources
will permit,
Businessmen, tradesineii, mechanics,
laborers, every Fran of us faces the
same peril of food shortage. There's
only one way to avoid it and that
is to join the war production club
and .help to our utntost to ino east
the foot} production in this coun$4.
Every other town that realizes its
duty le doing it and we hope we are
not lets alive to do ottr bitty than
others.
