Four Killed In Air Crash at Clinton Four men, including the three sons of a Chatham couple, were burned to death Sunday when their light plane struck a hydro pole and burst into names just north of Clinton. Dead are Raymond J. Sparks, 38. o£ Chatham, and his three ne- phews, Jerry Mena Sparks, 24, Dennis Dale Sparks, 21, and Rob- ert Stewart Sparks, 19, sons of Mr. and sirs. Glen Sparks, Chat- ham. The plane was attempting to take off from a field in which it had been forced to land by an overheated engine and faulty compass. The plane touched down about 11:45 a.m. Sunday on a corn field on the farm or Keith Tyndall, of i'.n. 1 Clinton, Roy Crich, 18, of RR 1, Clinton, said that the pilot walked over to hint after the plane landed and asked for directions to Grand Bend. The pilot told the youth that the aircraft's compass was faulty and that its engine was overheating. Crich said that the place start- ed to take 01? and became air- borne, bet could not clear hydro wires. The plane then banked sharply to avoid hitting the wires and struck the hydro pole, burst- ing into flames. It crumpled to the ground beside the Baseline cotul- ty road, about 1'.•i miles north of Clinton, The charred bodies or the four melt were pinned inside the twist- ed steel framework of the air- craft: Dorian Rutledge, of Clin- ton, freed the bodies from tiro wreckage with an acetylene torch Sunday afternoon. Flt, Sgt, J. M. McMichael of the Clinton RCAF station placed a guard around the Plane and the crash area was toped off. The plane had been rented in the morning from Seneca Airways of Wallacebtirg, The bodies were at the Bell and Mutch funeral home, Clinton, awaiting ftmeral arrangements. Deceased was the only daughter of the late Mr, and Mrs. Edward Flanagan, and she moved to London after the death. of her parents about 12 years ago. The funeral was held at St. Patrick's R. C.
