FEDERATION NEWS
May 19—
We would like to remind every-
one
veryone that Dairy Princess Competi-
tion will be held at the Clinton
Spring Fair, Saturday, June 2nd;
there has been increasing inter-
est In this competition and there
is still room for a few more con-
testants.
The competition is open to
Huron County girls, age 17 to 26.
We would like to hear from
you.
There has been grave concern
in Federation of Agriculture cir-
cles about the importation of fair-
ly large quantities of Polish eggs.
Since eggs come under a Gov-
ernment support price plan im-
port permits could be required be-
fore any importer could bring in
foreign eggs,
This importation will continue
to have a depressing effect on
our egg prices for a long period.
Importing this product seems
doubly unreasonable since the
weighted average price for "A"
Large Eggs for the current sup-
port price year now stands as of
May 5th at 33.9 cents per dozen.
The government guaranteed
support price for deficiency pay-
ment purposes is 34 cents per
dozen; this means that even now
with the law price period just
beginning, deficiency payments
will have to be made to produc-
ers; under these Circumstances
our government is supporting the
price of Polish eggs at the ex-
pense of the Canadian taxpayer.
In order that some definite re-
commendations to Government
may be arrived at the Middlesex
County Egg Producers are con-
vening a meeting in the Board
Roosts of the Middlesex County
Federation, 505 Talbot Street,
London on iVlouday, May 28, at
8.30 p.m.
The County Egg Producers ex-
ecutive will be notified of this
meeting but if any other produc-
ere are interested in attending,
please notify the Federation of
Agriculture office, Box 310, Clin-
ton, or .phone Hurter 2-9642, as
we could make arrangements for
a few more to attend.
In the May 4th report from the
Alberta Wheat, there is indica-
tion that drought may again
strike western Canada, In Medic-
ine I•Iat area it is doubtful that
moisture is sufficient for germin-
ation. In the Edmonton and Peace
River region moisture is sufficient
to produce good crops. In central
Alberta surface moisture is ade-
quate for germination but soil
moisture has not yet been rester.
ed by this spring's rainfall.
Wheat acreage is up about 6%
but barley and flax are about 7
and 12% below last year,
There has been a great deal of
speculation regarding the draft-
ing of. a Milk Marketing Plan.
The following is the latest news
on the question.
A concerted effort, by the cone
hined four Ontario milk and
cream groups is now being made
to develop a marketing plan
which fully benefits the best in-
terests of alt producers of milk
and eream In Ontario,.
Discussions and conferences
have been occnu'ing regularly dur-
ing the past three months, At
the cutlet, the four producer
group executives assumed an ed-
viso•y role. During recent weeks
a Provisional Board of 13 ntem-
hers has been appointed to com-
plete working out the details of
the plan, This board is composed
of three members from each of
the four group executives, and
one member from the Channel
Island Breeds Milk Producers
Association,
The executives of the four pro-
ducer groups, plus one producer
representing the United Dairy
and Poultry Co-operative, and
one producer representing the
Channel Island Breeds Milk Pro-
ducer Association, will continue
their advisory role on a hoard to
be known as the Ontario Milk and
Cream Producers Advisory Board,
When the details of the plan
are completed, the Provisional
Board will request the Ontario
Milk Industry Board to take a
vote of all producers.
In preparation for the vote, the
Provisional Board intends to fully
inform all milk and cream produ-
cers in Ontario on the particulars
of the plan, and give all full op-
pontuntty to study its merits be-
fore they are called upon to vote.
If the plan is approved, it will be
administered by the Provisional
Board in its initial operational
stages, and until a Marketing
Board, with equitable representa-
tion for all producers is elected.
Studies are now being made of
methods for this election.
