MILK PRODUCERS MEET The second annual meeting of the local concentrated milk pro- ducers was held in Memorial Hall, Blyth, this week. Dinner was served by the local branch of the W. I. President, Boyd Taylor, con- ducted the business, He stated that "1961 had been a good year, and while the price of milk Is not as high as we might like it to be, the production was high," The executive he said, is work Ing on plans for some type of bur- sary for students in this area at- tending Ridgetown Agricultural College whose parents are selling milk to the Blyth UDPC plant, Sydney Pearson, vice-president of the group, said, "Tho category for milk has been quite well main. tained, and we are trying to ar LOW PRICES Low prices on all shaver's and transistor radios during Say- cane's March Sale. William Chapman, a member of the executive of tine Ontario milk producer's, reported that "the executive had spent a day and a half considering resolu- tions and can not see that a sat- isfactory milk -marketing plan will Dome into effect in the near fu- ture," Fieldman- Kenneth Carey, of Thamesford, reported that tests were higher in the Blyth plant this year, Hugh Cleland, cheesemaker at the Blyth plant, stated, "Better milk makes better cheese. If it is ever necessary to use penicillin for your milking cows, please do not bring your milk to the plant, as it takes only a minute amount of this drug to destroy a whole vat of milk for cheese," Martin Baan took a very philo- sophical view, reminding the milk producers present. "We are in a changing age. We stew and worry too much' over things that may never come to pass, and if they do happen, they usually iron themselves out." • Bruce McCutcheon, a Dundalk area farmer, and vice-president of the UDPC, was the guest speaker. He stated in part, "The only thing we are sure of in the milk industry is confusion. "There should be a good pub- lic relationship between a milk marketing board and co-ops. "This year we could have sav- ed the farmers millions of dollars if we could have moved the sur- pluses and have an allover mark- eting plan. "Co-ops are not new in Ontario, and farmers should realize they own their co-op and have a mem- bership loyalty. Co-ops are built On memberships, and marketing boards on legislation, but they must work harmoniously togeth- er". Mr, McCutcheon's address sparked a spirited discussion, and, in replying to the address, Sydney Pearson questioned the wisdom of having so many co- ops. "Why not try to combine and have one Large, strong 00 - op?" he asked. To this, Mr. McCutcheon re- plied: "If Canadian farmers can not get together, 'how could you get co-ops to combine?' Carl Hemingway, Federation of Agriculture Fieldman, said "Some of these things are dis- turbing, and you are apt to come to the fictitious conclusion that there is conflict between market- ing boards and co-ops.
