District Fair Meeting Set for Listowel The annual district meeting for all fall and spring fairs in District 8 (Huron -Perth) is to be held this year at Listowel Nov. 1st. Registration is set for 9:80. a.m. with separate meetings for the men and women to be held in the L,O,L. Hall there with fore- noon and afternoon sessions. Pre- siding, at the separate meetings will be Robt, W. Campbell and Mrs. Joseph Grummett, directors for the district: Following a dinner in St. Paul's Anglican Church, the speaker will be Rev. Bruce A. Miles of Listowel Presbyterian Church. During morning sessions re- ports of all branches of fair work will be reported by representa- tives to the meetings. Highlights of the convention will be review- ed by Mrs. Keith Sharp of Sea- forth and Mrs. Robert Gibson of Gorrie. Outstanding exhibits from several of the fairs will be on display. Panel discussions will be fea- tures of the afternoon sessions, W. N. T. Ashton, agricultural re- presentative for Perth County will be chairman for the men's panel, when several aspects in the management of a successful fair will be discussed, Moderator for the women's panel will be Mrs. George lronside of George- town, secretary of the women's section of Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies. Panelists will be Mrs. D. S. MacNaughton of Wingham; Mrs. Earl Cud - more and Mrs. D. A. Rann of Brussels; Mrs. McEwing, Moore- field and Mr. R. G. Boyce, school inspector for North Perth. Topping off the afternoon is to be Mr. Reg Tompkins, florist of Listowel, who will give dem- onstrations of floral arrange- ments. Special guests expected to at- tend are, Mr. F. A. Lashley, Director of Fairs for Ontario and Mrs. H. A. Telfer, Paris, pre- sident of the women's section, O.A.A.S. MERRY MAIDENS The Seaforth Merry Maidens' fourth meeting of this unit "Fea- turing Fruit" was held at the home of Suzanne Dale on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. The meeting was open- ed by singing "0 Canada" and repeating the 4-H pledge. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Dorothy Jamieson and were adopted as read. The roll call was "Fruits which we dry, can, freeze at home". The next meeting will be held at the home of Marjorie Agar on Oct. 28th at 7 p.m. We discussed the topic "Fruits for Breakfast". Mrs. J. Broadfoot and Mrs. W, Whyte demonstrated how to prepare a fruit cup. The meeting closed with a delicious lunch. Moncrief WMS will hold their Fall Thankoffering meeting next Sunday evening, Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. (Standard Time). Miss Grace Bartja of Ethiopia will be guest speaker, and show slides of her work there. Ladies of Duff's,. Church, Walton, are to be guests at this meeting. Family Night for' the Walton W. I. will be held in the Commun- ity Hall next Friday evening, Oct. 27th commencing at 8.30 p.m. The members will entertain their hus- bands and families to a social evening. Lunch will consist of sandwiches and tarts. Miss Ruth Ennis R. N., of K. W. Hospital spent a few days with her parents, Mr, and Mrs. D. Ennis. A number of Institute ladies and their husbands were enter- tained by the Monerief branch last Wednesday evening. A full evening's entertainment was en- joyed by all, VARNA Rev. C. W. BAYFIELD Ladies Guild of Trinity Church held their October meeting at the home of Mrs. P, Weston, Eight 'members answered the roll call. Tile secretary's and' treasur- er's reports weregiven by Mrs. Weston and Mrs. A Bassett. The plans were made to have a eu- chreparty and bridge in October. The hostess served refreshments. A euchre and dance was held in the Town Hall on Friday even- ing, the proceeds going to the local ball team who were the champions of the season. Jinn Murray's Orchestra played for the dancing and lunch was served in the basement. Miss Joan Tillman of London spent the weekend with Mrs. J. Chuff. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Pfaff and Mark, Windsor, were at their home over the weekend. Sg't and Mrs. Wm. Reid. are spending this week at Ottawa and Toronto. Misses Ann and Alice Drouin and Adele Fernette left on Tues, day for Detroit after spending the summer at their cottage. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Hayman, London, spent the weekend at the "Little Inn". Walter Green, who has been sailing for the summer is spend- ing two weeks with his wife. Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Oddleifson, London, spent from Friday to Monday at their home. Dr. and Mrs. A. C. Chapman, Detroit; were at their home over the weekend. Mrs. L. Green returned home on Saturday after spending two weeks in London. Mrs. R. Upshall, Mrs. R. Shin - ons and Miss Berthena Sturgeon were lucky winners on tickets drawn in Clinton on Saturday in aid of Clinton Public Hospital, Funeral services were held on Thursday in Trinity Church for Wm. McDool who passed away in Clinton Hospital. He was in his 78th year and is survived by two nephews and two nieces at Owen Sound. Howard Scotchmer, London, spent the week with his parents, Mt: and Mrs. L. W, Scotchmer. Mrs. E. J. Florian, Clinton, is visiting her sister Miss Berthena Sturgeon. Mr, and Mrs. Keith Leonard and children of Willowdale, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Featherston. Mrs. Jas Hutchings had the misfortune to fall on Saturday and break her leg and Miss Cecil McLeod fell on Friday and broke her arm. Mrs. M. McClure who was 92 years of age passed away on Sunday morning at her home on Ann Street. She had lived alone and resided with her family for a couple of months to the winter. She is survived by two sons and two daughters. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday from Lodge Funeral Home, GoSerich, withl interment in Bayfieldviceme- tery Mrs. Nelson McConkey; Lon- don is spending this week at her cottage. The Ladies' Guild of :Trinity Anglican Church held a 'euchre and bridge party on Friday even- ing in theparish hall. Seven ta- bles of euchre and one of .bridge were played. The ladies served a delicious lunch. ST. COLUMBAN Most Rev. C. L. Nelligan, As- sumption University, Windsor, administered the Sacrament 'of Confirmation at St. Coluinban's Roman Catholic Church on Sat- urday evening. In the Confirma- tion class were 78 children, 39 boys and 39 girls. This was the largest class ever to be confirm- ed here at one time. Bishop Nell- gan conducted an examination consisting of questions on sin, the Sacrament, , and the Com- mandments. In his talk Bishop Nelligan spoke first to the child- ren, asking them to make three resolutions: keep from sin, be faithful' in their prayers, and have devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. He also spoke of the appearance of the' Blessed Vir- gin to the three children at'Fat= ima in 1917. He told the parents their responsibility was ,great in the bringing up of' their children, and their' example and teaching in the home was most important. Benediction was given by Rev. Father Kelly, Mt. Carmel. Asist- ing during the administration of Confirmation were: Rev. Father Toth, St. Bridgit's Church, Ken- nicott; Rev. Carey gave a report, of the Pres- byterial Executive meeting in Stratford. Miss Olive Speare had the topic and read a splendid pa- per on "Thanksgiving Medita- tion", Mrs. S. McCurdy told of the organization of the custom of our annual Thankoffering meet- ing and also read a poem "It's all in the point of View". Mrs. Kerslake introduced, the guest speaker, Miss I. McTavish of Stratford, who outlined her work as Supply Secretary of Stratford Presbyterial. She con- cluded her talk 'with a paper en- titled "Our Dependence Upon God". Mrs. Wesley Russell thank- ed all those taking part in the meeting. The Lord's. Prayer in unison closed the meeting.
