Mrs. Stewart Humphries was
appointed to lay the wreath at
Brussels on Nov. 11th. Mrs. A.
McDonald and Mrs. N. Marks
were co -conveners for Education.
The guest speaker, Provincial
Police Bowering of Seaforth, was
introduced by Mrs. McDonald.
In opening Mr. Bowering stated
that there are 438 acts in the
Statute of law. such as The
Highway Traffic Act, Liquor
Control Act, Temperance Act,
Juvenile Delinquent Act, etc.
In 1960 there were 1166 people
killed in Ontario and 34,436 in-
jured. Accidents just don't hap.
pen, If signs were obeyed acci-
dents would be at a minimum on
the Highways. Accidents are
caused by (1) motorists speeding
up when another car is passing.
(2) Rounding a curve without
reducing speed. (3) Staying in
wrong lane when motorists are
turning left and right. (4) The
driver should not look around
when driving, If car hits the
shoulder of the road he usually
gives a quick jerk and car
swerves, if another car is coming
the results are fatal. Lights
should be properly focused and
dimmer switch used.
Courtesy remarks were made
by Mrs. Nelson Marks and a gift
presented on behalf of the Insti-
tute, The Motto "Are people to-
day making the most of their
reading opportunities?" was giv-
en by Mrs, A. McDonald. In open-
ing she asked "Why do people
read?" The four main reasons
to increase general learning, to
add to knowledge of a specific
subject, to impress others or for
pleasure. To those who know the
pleasures and uses of reading,
hours alone are never lonely and
conversation with others need
not be idle or empty. Nearly ev-
eryone in North America can
read but comparatively few peo-
ple read any more than they have
to.
