BEETLE HITS BAYFIELD
AREA BEAN CROPS
Bean crops in the Bayfield
area again are infested this year
by the Mexican bean beetle, Hur-
on County Agr. Rep., D. H, Miles
reports.
The beetle, which at tacks
white beans only, has been re-
ported in a section extending
south and east of the village. It
first appeared in the area in 1957.
The larvae of the beetle ap-
pear on the underside of the leaf
and are yellowish -orange in color
with black spines.
In the past, agricultural offici-
als urged bean growers to watch
their fields closely and spray if
egg masses began to show on 10
per cent of the Plant foliage or
if larvae were appearing in the
same proportion.
Last year Mr. Miles said "Sev-
in" was the insecticide that
seemed to do the best job of er-
adicating the beetles.
