Ron Muir, son of Mr, . and Mrs. Gorden Mair of Seaforth; became top scorer in December for the Greensboro, North Carolina, Gen- erals where he is playing hockey ;this winter, ' - , Earle Hellen, 1leooid Sports 'Editor, wrote as follows; Two, weeks ago Ron Muir en, joyed his biggest night in Senior hockey when he tallied seven points against the Clinton Comets at Utica, N,Y, Tonight those same Comets are here at War Memorial- Coliseum and., the dark-haired Muir is look- ing forward to another big night. The seven -point night, biggest of the year for any General, was the big impetus which sent the Gen. left winger up the adoring ladder in the Eastern Hockey League.. It was the climax of a hot scoring streak that saw Muir • tally 16 points in six games to become the No. 1 scorer for the Generals, Muir's presence in the General line-up came about by one of those quirks of fate that happen along life's highway. The Sea,- forth, eaforth, Ontario, native -was slated to join the Johnstown Jets for pre -season training at Niagara Falls. _ At, the time Muir was living in St, Thornas, Ontario where the Generals held their training camp this fall. He stopped by the St. Thomas rink a day or two before leaving for the Johnstown camp and ran into Don Carter and Butch McKay who were working out. Muir knew Carter from previ- ous hockey days in Canada. "We were talking hockey and Don. and Butch urged tb come and try out with Greensboro,” related Muir the other day. "They told me what a great place Greensboro was.. W oat a tine arena alley naa here and how nice the people were. They talked to Coach Spong and Pete Handy about giving me a trial, so I decided not to go to Johnstown and come with Greensboro: "I've really enjoyed it here too. Butch and Don were right about this being a great place to play hockey." ' In the back of Muir's mind was another reason why he decided to come to the Gate City., In St. Thomas he had been working for the Vick Chemical Co. plant and. knew that the headquarters of the plant were here .in Greensboro, S.C. Sodas reasoned that he might be able to find a job there when hockey season is over next spring 'Like all hockey players Muir,' who is 24 years old, is an • all- round athlete. Baseball is his sec- ond love and he has quite a repu- tation as an outfielder in Canada. n fact be would like ,a tryout. with the G -Yankees next- spring. Last -summer Muir played right. field for the St, Thomas' team in CURLING NOTES f The result of the annual cont - petition between the President's a Canadian league which he calls one of the fastest in the Domin- ion. A left-handed batter he hit .290 and clouted nine homers in 34 games, Off that St. Thomas team the Phillies signed a center ielder for a $40,000 bonus. In addition to his feats in the baseball field and ice hockey rink, Muir .tried his hand at sports riling for awhile last spring. at St. Thomas.
