FEDERATION NEWS
By J. Carl Hemingway
Merry Christmas Friends and
Good Cheer to Alii
As we draw to the close of the
year it is fitting that we rejoice
in the receiving of the greatest
gift of all. In this all of as can
find warmth and comfort against
the trials and reverses many of
us have suffered. For many farm-
ea's 1960 has not been a prosper-
ous year and to the many unem-
ployed Christmas this year will
he a great deal less festive than
others they have known.
Can we think on these things
and not question "Why"?
Why, in a land of so called bur-
densome food surpluses, do men,
women and children have "to go
hungry? No, I don't mean in In-
dia or Africa. I mean right here
in Canada. Why is it that factories
are silent and the workers idle
when so many could make such
good use of their production?
Have we somehow gotten our-
selves into the same position as
the ship -wrecked sailor on the
ocean. Water, water everywhere
and not a drop to drink.
What is the "salt" in our socie-
ty that causes this hardship to
many
Last week even though I had
to snake the trip to Toronto any-
way I felt a warns glow of satis-
faction as I helped unload 60010
five or six hundred pounds of
food stuffs from the car at the
Fred Victor Mission. This food
Was rho gift of the Brussels -Ethel
Charge of the United Church.
As I returned to the meeting of
the 0,F.A. this glow of satisfac-
tion was dinned as I wondered
what would be the condition of
the recipients of this generous
Christmas spirit a month from
w,
the O,F,A. I saw the dela-
gatestes officially adopt the motto
that has been used for many
years "Not For Ourselves Alone".
Surely this is in keeping with this
Christ rnaa season,
At the Poultry Producers 01001 -
lug tho following day a Marketing
Plan report was adopted that will
go a long way in providing an
equal marketing opportunity to
everyone. This too pee well with
Christluas.
Yet at both these meetings ali
too often the words "Free Mark-
eting" "Private enterprise" "Dem-
ocretic freedom'" were heard. And
I wondered if all of thein could
have been suaumed up in the
words "Self interest",
Perhaps you will say that, hu-
man nature being what it is this
can be no different and until a
few days ago I would probably
have agreed with you. However I
learned that there have been cavi•
ligations where literally there
Wes n0 personal ownership of
anything, This of course changed
when the white man oamo and
showed the natives a better sys-
tem,
Yes this is a time for rejoicing
but perhaps it is also a time for
soul searching;

To people of the Mission where

purely a religious festival, people

sung.
