John Beattie Was
SO years in Business
John Beattie, one of ISeafortlr's
'oldest residents, and former busi-
ness man, died suddenly'. Thurs.
•day'morning'at his home on John
St. Mr. Beattie was 'born 92 years
ago,. at Pond Mills, near London,
•a son of the late Andrew Beattie
and Mary McDougall. He was the
last surviving member of 'a family
of 14.
He was in 'business in Seaforth
tor 60 years. In 1890, he formed a
partnersliip With his late brother,
Robert ,Beattie. and opened a gro-
cery business here. In 1910, he
took over the partnership. Later
he gate up the grocery business,
and 'established the Beattie Bro-
thers -variety store, Which he op-
'elated
m'erated 'until 1950.
'He was active in 'curling, bowl-
ing, and fishing. He was a mem-
ber of First Presbyterian Church,
the choir, an elder, and the
'board of managers. He was an
active +memlber of 'Sealforth Lions
Club for 34 years, and was a past
preeident•of the •club. In later
years Mr. Beattie made a hobby
of +writing verse, and collections
:of his poems whifdh be published
in booklet form are treasured by
friends near and tar.
He was a member of the Sea -
forth Male Quarette.
In 1898 'he was married in Eg-
monrl'vilTe to the late .Isabella Col-
lie who predeceased him in 1939.
In 1943 he was married to Edna
Henderson DeLaeey, who sur-
vives.
Also surviving area daughter,
Mrs. James A. ,(Florence) Stew-
art, 'Seaforth; four grandchildren
and;; three great grandchildren.
One son, Douglas, Ottawa, died in
1957.
Funeral service was held on
Saturday at 1 p.m. in First Pres-
byterian. Church, with Rev. D.
Leslie Elder •officiating. Honor-
ary pallbearers were -Dr. E. A.
McMaster, •Malcolm McKellar, Er -
neat Geddes, Joseph Dorsey.
Charles Barber and Patrick 'Mc-
Connell. Flowerbearers were Mel-
vin 'Steffen, Elmer Larone, Wm..

Library Board
Miss M. D. Turnbull 'was re-
elected chairman of Seaforth
Carnegie Library Board for her
12th term Monday night at the
annual • board meeting. Mrs. Jos.
McConnell was elected sec.-treas.
Reporting to the board, librar-
ianian
'Mrs. ;Shirley Wright reported
an increase in circulation during
1959 of 3,657 books. Total circula-
tion was 16,885 books.
The number of users during the
past year also increased. At the
end of the year there were 643
members of the library, an in-
crease of 116. Of this group there
were 391 adult and 252 children
listed as members,

A pretty wedding was solemniz-
ed at Northside United Church
manse,; Seaforth, on Saturday,
Jan. 30 at 2 o'clock when Glen
Arthur Adair and Mary Edythe
Broadfoot exchanged wedding
vows. The groom is the son of
Mr: and Mrs. Jack Adair, Seaforth
and the bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John Broadfoot, rr.
1, Brucefeld. Rev. 1 Cliff Britton
officiated. The bride looked' lovely
in a white chiffon street length
dress, bouffant chiffon skirt over
taffeta. V neck at the back, and
a bow and two •chiffon streamers
from the front. Her fingertip veil
was held in place by a pearl head-
dress and she wore a red carna-
tion corsage. bliss Jean . Broad -
toot, rr. 1, Brucefieid, sister of the
bride, was maid of honor wearing
a red velvet street length dress,
wide neckline, princess style with
bouffant skirt. She wore white ac-
cessories'and a white carnation
corsage. Mr. Lloyd Adair of
Molesworth, was his brother's
groomsman. A reception was held
at the bride's parents home. The.
bride donned a blue and grey wool
dress, white accessories and a
silver grey borg for their wedding
trip. The couple will reside .in
Mitchell.
LOGAAN FIRE
A fire call came in to the. Sea -
forth rural fire brigade on Wed-
nesday Morning about 7.30, from
Reuben Buuck's, Brodhagen. Be-
ing from Logan twp. the call was.
turned over to Mitchell tire bri-
-gade, who cover that township.

The marriage took place ,in
First Presbyterian Church on
Saturday, Jan. 30th at 2,30 o'-
clock of :Margaret Agnes Carter
and Richard Samuel Moore, The
bride is :the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs, Thomas Carter, Jarvis street,
Seaforth, and the groom is the
son of Mr. and MTS. Alma Moore,
r.r. 1, :Sebringville. Rev. D. L. E1 -
der officiated. iMr. Kempster was
organist. The church decorations
consisted of flowers and bows.

eause'.
Given in marriage by her fath-
er the 'bride wore a floorlength
gown of lacquered taffeta with
full pleated back, bolero type
jacket with lily -point sleeves and
stand -ug collar. Her 'flowers were
red roses.
Maid of honor was Mies 'Mar-
lene Carter, sister of the 'bride,
who wore a street -length dress
similar to the bride's in' blue Jac-
quered taffeta, Bridemaids were
bliss Emily 'Carter, sister of the
bride, and Miss. Alice Moore, sist-
er of the groom, who wore dress-
es same as the .maid of honor and
their flowers were yellow babY
mums. JIdarilyn Moore, :cousin of
the groom, was 'flower girl, wear-
ing a gold dress and carrying
blue :mums, while the ringbearer
was Kenneth Dalton, cousin of the
bride, in navy blazer and grey
pants.
Lawrence Smith, Stratford, cou-
sin of the groom, was best man.
Ushers • were Melvin Hubert, Sea -
forth, and Lloyd Fetz, Mitchell.
The wedding dinner was at the
home of the bride's' parents where
decorations were in .blue and
white. The bride's mother receiv-
ed in a navy dress with white col-
lar and white accessories with
red corsage. She was assisted by
the groom's mother in a blue fig-
ured dress with pink accessories
and corsage. Assistants were El-
len Gorwill and Davina Hubert.
For travelling the bride wore a
blue wool suit and white accessor-
ies, with corsage of red roses.
They will reside at r.r. 1, Sebring-
wllie, Guests were present from
Niagara Falls, Stratford, .Sebring-
ville, Walton, Londesboro and
Seaforth.

The regular meeting of the Red
Cros's will be on Friday, Feb. 5
at 3 p.m.

,The CGRT of 'First Presbyter-
ian •Church ,met Monday evening
with a good attendance. Miss Sal-
ly Fox presided. Ivy Townsend
led in prayer, Scripture was read
by Brenda Ross. During business
it was decided to hold a St. Pat-
rick's tea in March. A poem was,
read by Dorothy Ross.
INJURED IN ACCIDENT
Miss Sharon Cook of Seaforth
post offfice staff is in Listowel
hospital following a car accident
near Monkton Saturday evening.
She suffered severe injuries to
her face, and expects to be in
hospital for a week or ten days.

OARS WRECKED
Four teenagers from the Dub-
lin district were uninjured when
their car collided Friday evening
about ten o'clock with a parked
car just east of Egmondville,
owned by William T. .Brown of
the 3rd con. of Tuckersmith. No
one was in the Brown ear at the
time. Both cars :were severely
wrecked, Police investigated. The
young people Were on their way
to the dance at .Seaforth high
school.

Burial took place on Tuesday
in'Maitlandbank cemetery of Mra.
Robert ,Willis, of Barrington,
Rhode Island, Mrs, Willis was the
'former •Mavis Clark of Ottawa.
Her husband, who survives, is a
native of Seaforth, Also surviving
is one son, Robin, In Rhode Is-
land. The body arrived Monday
at the G, A. Whitney funeral
home, Seaforth, where funeral
was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. Rev.
J. C. Britton, of Northside United
Church, was in change.
Presentation to
Retiring. Treasurer
Dr. Jas. Semple paid a glowing
tribute to the retiring treasurer
of Egmondvilde United 'Church at
the annual meeting Jan. 27th. Mr.
Thos. Robinson who celebrated.
his 84th birthday in 'December
has faithfully served the :ohuroh
for the past,15 years, Dr, Semple
spoke, warmly of Mr, Robinson's
loyalty and helpfulness and pre
-
seated 'him With a book. and then
spoke for the congregation of his
genial and kindly .manner, also
of his devotion to the task he
loved} On behalf of the •congrega-
tion Art Henderson presented Mr.
Robinson with a cane. and Rus-
sell 'Coleman and Alex Chesney
presented him with a chair. Mr.
Robinson, though taken by sur -
,prise made a fitting reply and
said it had been a Joy to serve.
Dr. 'Semple •opened the meeting
with a devotional service follow,
ed by a short "In (Memoriam 01
Silence and sprayer for eight mem•
bers who passed on during the
year. Arthur Routledge acted as
secretary and read the report of
the nominating committee which
was approved as ,follows: Stanley
Gray, Eider ; Jno. McCloy and
Stanley Gray are Presbytery Re-
presentatives. Jas. McIntosh, the
,chairman of Stewards: Four
Stewards to serve a three-year
term: Jno. -Powell Jr., Allister
Broadfoot, Milton Dietz, and Wm.
P. Miller; 'M. &'M. Convenor, Ken
Smith; Rena (MacKenzie, auditor.
It was regretted that the names
of two elders, Russell Coleman
and Newman Garrett 'had been in-'
advertently omitted in the 1959
Annual report.

successful year were read by, Dr.

The renovation committee re-
port that all indebtedness on the
church, manse, and new 'garage
had been paid was enthusiastic-
ally received. The deed of the
church shed will be handed over
to Norman 'McLean in the near
future.
Plans were discussed for the
1.25th .Anniversary in Sept. and
theOfficial Board was given pow-
er to act.
Deep gratitude tor devoted ser-
vice was expressed to Dr. and
Mrs. Semple, Lyle 'Hammond and
choir, Reg Knights and all offi-
cers, teachers, workers, members
and adherents. After the Doxolo-
57. and prayer lunch was served
by 'Mrs. Alex Boyes, '.Mrs, E. Ste-
nhenson, Mra. A. Routledge and
Mrs. Alex .Chesney. Ivan For-
sythe thanked the.,dadies.
' BRIDE-TO-BE HONORED
On Thursday, Jan. 21st - Miss
Ellen Gorwill entertained a num,
ber of girl friends in honour of
Agnes Carter, bride of 'Saturday,
to a lovely clipper atter which
contests were the •form of enter•
tainment. 'Betty .Muegge read the
following ,address and Ellen anade
the presentation to Agnes: They
tell us and perhaps 'tis true, that
when you're oalled upon to do
just what we've asked of you to-
night, to sit sip here, right in
plain sight while everybody stares
at you, and same even wish they
were up here too. They tell me
that your spirit sinks until they
almost in the 'brink, just perk
right up and don't be blue, We've
come to extend our wishes true.
Just a year ago you were a girl
in school trying to learn the gold-
en rule, then to Stedman's you
found your way; :content and hap-
py with their 'pay. Now you have
chosen to be a bride, to take a
husband by your side. We wish to
you 'health, happiness, 'prosperity
and love, What more could the
angels wish above? 'Se now to
you we will present these gifts to
show how .much you've meant to
us and to your anany friends, and
hope that this 'friendship never
ends.
After opening the gifts, Agnes
thanked everyone :and special

for the lovely supper and evening.
On Tuesday evening, Jan. 26 a
number of friends and neighbors
gathered at the home Mrs. Aus-
tin Matheson in honor of Agnes
Carter, bride of, the week. Games
and contests were enjoyed by all.
The address was read by Mrs.
Glen .Stai'fen, and the presenta-
tion was made by Faye and Glen-
da 'Matheson and Cheryl Muir.

February Meeting of
Tuckersmith Council
Tuckersmith council met on
Feb. 2nd. Bylaw establishing bor-
rowing credit at the Can, Bank of
Commerce in the amount of 3100,-
000, and bylaw appointing a elerk-
treasurer were read and passed.
Bylaw re tree planting in the
township was given two readings
and will be submitted to the Dept,
of Lands & Forests for approval
before final reading. Connell will
request Ontario Hydro to install
two additional street lights in the
Brumfield area.
Surety bonds on the treasurer
and tax collector were acknowl-
edged by council and the clerk
was instrueted to keep them in
the safety deposit box.
Charles Eyre was appointed
weed inspector for 1960 at sane
rate of pay as in 1959; Wilmer
Broadfoot was appointed warble
Ry inspector for 1960, rate of pay
90c ,per hour and 10c per mile
travelled while on official duty.

decided to pay travelling expenses
of $25 to delegates of the associa-
tion of rural municipalities and

gravel to township roads in 1960;
for 800 lbs, warbicide for warble
fly control, and for spraying of
cattle tor warble fly control. Tend-
er ads will appear in this paper
in the last two issues of Feb.
Messrs. Lien Carnoehan and :Mil-
ton Dietz attended the meeting
and requested council to pass a
bylaw authorizing that Farmers
Union requisition forms be sign-
ed and added to tax roll for coll-
ection. The clerk was instructed
to report to council at the March
meeting re requirements as con-
tained in the statutes at which
time council would report their
decision to the Farmers Union.
Court of Revision on the Wil-
liams Municipal Drain was set
for March lat at 1.16 pm.

ship fee and grant $35; relief, sup.

leave early to attend a meeting

Junior Farmers
Hold Banquet
The annual banquet of the Sea -
forth Junior Farmers and Junior
Institute was held on Feb. 2 in
the Orange hall. The Huron
County Junior Farmer quartette
provided the musical entertain-
ment. The guest speaker, Mr. F.
Peel gave an 'interesting talk and
showed many slides on his trip to
Russia. Past ,president pins were
presented to Mrs, Bruce Coleman,
Sandra Doig, Merton Keyes and
Bill Strong. A business meeting
of the members followed the en-
tertainment.
W. I. NOTES
The Feb. meeting of Seaforth
W. I. will be held at the home of
Mrs. James F. Scott, Tuesday,
Feb. 9 at 2.16 p.ni. This is the
Home Economics ,meeting con-
vened by Mrs. E. Whitmore and
Mrs. J. Kerr. Roll call to be an-

Clinton is spending a few days

We are sorry to learn of Eddie
Wamnies, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.
Wammes, who is a patient in
London Hospital. Eddie under-
went an operation on his leg and
will be in a cast for several
months and we hope he has a
complete recovery.

Seaforth, who has not been in the -
best of health, is visiting a few
