FEDERATION NEWS,
By 3. 0, Hemingway •
An editorial by Philip Deane,
staff reporter for the Globe and
Mail, in the Jan. 2nd edition bears
comment.
This editorial states that 30 per
cent of the world's population has
half the f000d supply and .that one
seventh of the population controls
two thirds of the wealth.
'Mr, Philips goes en to explain
that the "West" 'must change its
ways or we will Sind ourselves
over run by this huge mass •o5 un-
iterprivileged People. This 'could
be by war (China's leader has de-
clared that 800 million Chinese
are expendable) but not necesser-
dly so, It could be done by simply
withholding the imports that are
vital to our economy. The editor-
ial might be summed op very
briefly, one section of the world
cannot indefinitely feast on the
other's famine.
In all this I can readily agree,
1t con''Sorms nicely to the'recom-
niendation oS idle Canadi .3'ed-
eration el Agrfcnititre that hiss
been urging the foranat•Oon •of a
world food bank for many- years.
One suggestion I would snake
however le that Canadians• should
fleet 'clean home base. At the
Marketing and Co -Operative Con-
ference Held Dee. 28.31 in Guelph
Prof, Ralph 'Campbell gave the
following figures,
,Brdtaln, 'percent of farmers in
popmlohlon 5 per cent; 'per cent 05
National Ineema received by far.
mere 6 per cent; Denmark 20 per
cent, 18 percent; Netherlands 13
per cent, 10' .per cent; Canada
13 per cent, 7% per Dent.
Only in Boltain do fanners re.
calve the share of the National
income that they produce, In Can-
ada the farmer produces twice as
muoh National wealth as he re-
ceives for his labour. Just as the
Globe and Mail editorial points
out that 'our World economy can-
not continue on this basis neith-
er can our Canadian economy
continue when .one industry is re-
quired to subsidize the balance of
our labour 'force to the .extent of
half its income.
On inquiry I have been inform-
ed that unemployment insurance
and welfare .payments by Govern-
ment aanountecl to over 200 -mil-
lion in the past year. Also that
the total cost to -Government ter
subsidies to Agricultmre was less
than 20 millions.
It a1•oean't seem logical that the
Government •should snake such a
huge expenditure . to guarantee
that the people have 'the money to
purchase food and refuse to snake
any guarantee that there will be
food avalialalo for .the .same per
son to buy.
'What would be the reaction if
Partnere took the advice of Gov-
ernment and produced to .our
market hut made 1/865 of a Mis.
take and an empty milk bottle ar-
rived on Your doorstep on New
Year's Day?
