Gooier, the for- mer Minnie D. Lyon, aged 75. She was born en Mullett twp, daugh- ter of the late Joseph and Eliza- beth Lyon, and lived in Hullett sine her marriage to Mr. Gooier. After they retired from the farm, they lived in Londesboro. As a member of Londeaboro United Church, she played an active part in its various organizations. Sur- viving besides her husband are three daughters, :firs. John (Beth) Hamilton, London; Mrs. Spencer (Rhoda) Hann, Waterloo; Mrs. Harry (Elva) McEwan, Clinton; one sister, Mrs. D. E. Dewar, Ot- tawa. The body rested at the Beat- tie funeral home until noon Satur- day. Service was held at the Lond- esboro United Church at 2 p.m, Burial was in Ball's Cemetery, Hullett Township, KIPPEN Mr, and MTs. Most of the land around Varna WAS sebbled in the 1820 and 1830's by Scobtish and Irish settlers, some of them being Orangemen. in the old country, but It was not till 1809 that they found time to tom an. Orange Lodge and sleet Wild.iam 'M'o01ym.ont at their fh'st Master. As there was then no hall inihe village they rented a large room do a beat hotel until the Royal Temgiers built the present hall, wliith the 'Orangemen rented. Also the Foresters and Macca- bees rented this hall, so it is not hard to imagine it being a very busty hail, with four sooiebies meeting once 'or twice a month. The hall was situated across from the menet public school where It isematned until 1895 when it 'was moved to a lot east of John Aildington's house, until 1952. Then it was again moved to its present site, placed on a 'ce- ment foundation, and completely renovated inside and 'o't. The list of offioersdn 1868 were: Thomas Simpson, Joe Caldwell, John Walker, John McOlymont, Henry Iludson and Thomas •Mc- Olymont, Other members were James Foote, John McOlaren, James McFarlane, John Redmond, John Foster, Waken. IMcieearn, Thomas Cook, John. Turner, John Duncan, William and Alex Mc- Olymont. The lodge grew in numbers fast, Almost every meeting new mem- bers would be Initiated, sometimes seven er eight on one .night. On the morning of .the 12th, the mem- bers would meet at 5 or 5.30 a.m. then drive to the celebration or ,drive to BTucefield and take the t'r'ain to where the celebration was held. In 1880 the lodge paid Sohn Sparrow $2 to take the music and banner to Godentah. A 'feature of the •twelfth 'morning was a parade through the village which is still a Yearly event. The ,members were always ready to lend a helping Band to those in need as the minutes re- cord money being paid out for dootors' bills, also funeral expen- ses and once to erect a tombstone for v}11'lous menn91ors. Another tradition was the an- nual oyster supper on the 5th of November, which is etill oa'ru'ied out in .the Torun of a turkey sue - per each year, in. 1880 the officer were: Al - bent Robinson, John d'odiack, Charles Foster, Wiilliam Ratliwell,, Jellies Stewart, Sera Sparrow, D, Robinson, Seines lacCaymont, J, Turner.. Several members enlisted and some paid the supreme sacrifice, In 1951 the dodge sponsored the celebration in Bayfield which was one of the best held do that 'vil- lage. During recent years the mama bees have operated the local Aka -. ing rink in the 'United Church shed wdnichthas been a •great pleas- ure to both old and young during the winter ,months. The oldest member in the lodge. at present is Bro. Ben Rothe/yell, who joined the lodge in 1888 and who was presented a year ago wdhh an Honorary Certificate.
