Publishers HOPE TO START SEWER EARLY IN NEW YEAR Seaford' town council at the TO Medea December meeting held in the ,town shall en •Monday evening, expressed the hope that sewer work in the North ward would starlet early in the new year. Councillor Habkirk reported tsar the property ' committee, leading discussion at the town weigh scales. He had the records of John Cummings for the scales and the revenue appeared to be over $.600 a year. Council decided to refer the matter to the opal dealers. Fire 1Clrief John Scott reported nine fire calls in town and lose of $4150. Zlhere•lted been 19 rural Mires. This would in- clude the hospital and shoe fact- ory actory taking in Part of Goderioh St, James St., Centre. St. and W. William St, and some of the cross .streets. The estimated cost $105,200 also provides for a pump and force line to pump into .the main sewer on Godarioh St. Council agreed to ask the. OWtt.0 to instar thhe project and :provide the financing. Council hoped the work would start early next year. Councillor Turnbull said the town won't' use the present dis- posal plant as long as it worked effectively. He thought ,meaiey of the 'rouses would not be hooked to the sewer for some time and the increased flow would bo mod- erate. A grant of $1000 ,plus- $2 for each assessed member was ,made to the fire brigade. Council proposed, that the old shoe factory on ,Main Street at the railway should be offered as` a beer warehouse. I.' was held in the •Seaforth District High School last Tuesday evening. The President, Mrs. H. Hugild presided tor Itltet business. The decorations were in yuletide setting for (their 'Christ- mas program. An invitation was ac- cepted from the Grand Bend W. I. to be guests at their Christmas meeting on Thursday, Dec. 17111. The collection for this meeting will be sent to the Children's Aid Sooiety at Goderioh, Mrs. L. Strong presided for the following Christmas program: Carol singing acoompanied by Mrs. J. Holmes, magistrate of Huron County tor 11 years, died en Monday In Clinton Gener- al hospital, He was. 64. Mr. Holmes had been absent from the Huron County Courtroom for the past month due to illness. When the order -In -council, ap- pointing Mr. Holmes magistrate of the county was issued Aug. 10, 1948, he had been ,Huron crown attorney ,for 17 years. He was the third generation of his family to serve the County of Huron. In his appointment as crown attorney, Mr. Holmes 'suc- ceeded ,his tether, the late D. E. Holmes, who was then appointed a .ceunl e, judge ill •Sidneoe County. His grandfather, the late Dr. W. J. R. Holmes, was treasurer of Huron County for some years, and his maternal grandfather,` the late Archdeacon Ellwood, was a former erector ,ef St. George's Anglican Ohureh, Goderioh, Mr. 'Holmes was born in Goder- ich and moved, at age seven, to Winlgharm where he began his ed- ucation. Atter graduation from high 5ohooi and Osgoode Hall, Toronto, the began practicing law in Godeeioh in 1920, ,He was ap- pointed crown attorney he 1931, A Veteran of the First World War; he enlisted in the 161st Bat- talion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, and went overseas as a lieutenant. MEETS The December meeting .of the Northside United Church WITS was +held Tuesday evening. ,Mrs. 1. C. Britton opened with the poem "There will always be a Christmas". Mre, C. Walden pre- sided and (hymn 65 was sung, prayer by Mrs. May. The annual reports for 1959 were given. A ,short memorial service in memory of .Mrs. ,Savauge, .Ms's. Roy Lawson and ,Miss J. Alexander. Rev. J. 0. Britton installed the officers for 1960. Mrs, C. Walden gave her season's (greetings. ,Mrs. A. Close .took over the 'meeting opendng with hymn 47. Scripture and prayer by Mrs. al. ,Berger. A love- ly duet was sung by -Mr's. N. Bell and :Mrs, E. McCue. Mrs. Close's circle had •a lovely :candlelighting service followed by a :Ohs'lstmas Story by Miss Gladys Thompson. The CGIT of rivet Presbyterian Church 'held their regular meeting on ailonday night at 7 o'clock. The evening was spelt in making and wrapping gifts for the shutins. We ,drew names far Christmas gifts. Rehearsal was held for the candlelight service to be held on Sunday night, Dec. 20th. WALTON The Walton hall board sponsor- ed a euchre and Lost Heir party in the community hall on Friday :following evening with the win- niug prizes: Euchre—ladies high, Jean :Walters, low, Jean Miller; men's high, Emerson Mitchell, low, Keith Turnbull. The opening ex- ercises were in .charge of the pre- sident, Mas. S. Walters, Mrs. E. Leach and .Miss Catharine Leach of Brussels who demonstrated .gift wrapping which Proved interest- ing and helpSull at ,this season of the ,year. Poems "One Happy Night" and "The •Ohriatmas Eve" were read byMTS. Ihed Johns.. The topic "The Wonder .of Christmas" was ,given by Mrs. H. Pridham. Misses :Margaret and Doris Johns favor- ed with a duet "Star of The East". (Mrs. S. Grahame introduced ;Mrs. Kasper Gauntenbein, who gave .a demonstration on gift wrapping, who, on opening her remarks said, ,that gift wrapping is an expression of thoughtful- ness. MTs. Calvin Christie thanked Mrs. Gauntenbein and ,the meeting closed with the hymn "Silent Night. Holy Night" and prayer by MTs. Neil. McKILLOP The Christmas meeting of the W. A. of Duff's 'Church, McKillop was held at the home of Mrs. A. Scabt on Dec. 9 in the afternoon. Mrs. R. M..Seott, the W. A. Pres., opened the meeting with Carol singing. Mrs. Gordon M'aeKenzie gave the scripture reading. Treas- urer'•s •report was given and it told us our annual fowl supper had been quite a ,success. The president, firs. J, L. Bell, presid- ed and led the devotions on the theme of "Christmas". A minute of silence was observed in mem- ory of a beloved member, Mrs. H. R. Scott. Mrs. J. WI:Elam Thomp- son read an interesting account of Ohristsnas in Lebanon as told by .a missionary, who was a nat- ive of Chippewa, Ont. This was followed by :highlights of the lives of ,several women of bare 01d Test- ament given by Mrs, W. J. Thome, son tui MTs. D. L. Elder. Some of these were not perfect, but through the power of God's grace their characters and lives were transformed and they became faithful servants of their God and their country. Rev. D. L.
