A 150 -million -dollar contract was recently announced for Dyno- soar (from "dynamic soaring"). Boosted to 17,000 m.p.h.—near satellite speed — by the liquid - fueled Titan, the airplane -space ship could glide around the world one or more times and bring its pilot back to earth, 'according to the Air Force, flight testing of the Titan alone Is expected to begin early next text winter. REBEL CHIEF IN LEBANON — Ali Oud, chief of the rebel military police, uses a loudspeaker to give orders to followers grouped in the Chouf area. Fierce fighting has been reported across the no -man's land separating rebel -held Old Tripoli and the government-held new section. DOWN TO RIO — The State 'De- pa'rtment is expected to .an- nounce that Secretary John Foster Dulles will visit Brazil early in August, in spite of threats of mass anti -U.S. dem- onstrations. Dulles would spend two or three days in the capi- tal, Rio de Janeiro. Officials discounted reports •that labor unions and university students were preparing a 24-hour gen- eral strike to coincide with Dulles' arrival. FOR PHOTOGRAPHING THE EARTH—This diagram shows how the AIr'Force satellite Pied Piper will operate. The satellite, which may weigh asmuch as 1,200 pounds, wilI be cone-shaped. It will be put into orbit and its nosepointed at the earth. The nose cone will open out like a clam shell so that a camera can photograph the earth. Later Pled Pipers are expected t� radio photographs to earth, but the first one will probably be re- covered by parachute. Still later, the satellites may carry tele- vision cameras, radar, and possibly men. The. first Pied Piper, expected to be launched in December or January, will probably not carry a camera. JET AGE RIVALS—Visitors to the recent British Columbia Centennial' Aviation Show at Vancouver got a chance to compare Russian and U.S. commercial jet airliners parked at the airport. In the foreground, above, is America's show- piece, the Boeing 707, powered by four Pratt & Whitney JT3 engines. The twin -jet Tupolev TU -104, background, is a veteran of service in the Soviet Aeroflot national airline, but the 707 will be able to carry more passengers at higher speeds when it goes into service. Comparison view il- lustratesdesign ideas ill the two countries, reflected both in military and commercial aircraft. Russians make the jet engine an integral part of the wing unit, while Americans favor the underslung type.
