13 MILL TAX BOOST STUDIED
BY SIEAFORTH, COUNCIL
At a special meeting Tuesday
night Seaforth town counoil, fac- Merchants Oppose
ed with a 13 mall hike in the tax
rate, hold striking 'the 1959 rate
over for a few days to try to

mates to bring 'the residential

surprised to learn that Seaforth
is knowh in :distant parts of the
province as "the town• with the
highest tax rate In Ontario."

Councillors Cardne, Brady, Turn-
bull, Habkirlc, Reeve Ball and
Mayor Christie,
Other increases in the mill
rate include 4,4 •mills for public
school; over a mill in the county
mate and .3 for the library.
The estimates makeno provi-
sion for repairs at the arena, Ma-
yor Christie said Mr. Taylor of
London bad inspected the arena
on Tnesday. He estimated re-
pair's could oost up• to $6,000. It
will be necessary to remove sone
steel .roofing to see what condi-
tion the second truss is in, The
Mayor said the rest of the ,roof
Is sound but leaking badly.
Councillors said that last ,year
the tax rate bad been kept (down
by 'spending the town surplus but
the surplus is entirely gone now.
The figures below are from the
estimates presented by Treasurer
D. II, Wilson, Tliere will be some
revisions before :the tax rate for
1959 is set by counoil.

guest speaker, Miss Rena Fen-
nell who was ''a delegate to the
Christian 'Education Convention
in ,japan last year. She showed
slides -of .the beautiful pictures
she took in Japan, Korea, along
Kong, the Phf11ipines and -1-1a,
wale while giving an interesting
commentary. Mrs. John Patter-
son thanked Miss Fennell on be-
half of the appreciative audience,
Mt'. John Talbot installed the
new officers. Meeting closed with
God Save the Queen.

corsage. Miss Shirley Hislop -of

dant. She was- gowned in a ,street
length green taffeta stress with
white feather hat, white shoes
and a pink carnation corsage.

brother of the bride, was best
man. -The -bride's mother chose a
sheath dress' of blue arnel and

carnation aotsage. • The groom's
mother chose a flowered tan and

dinner was held at the Club Grill
In Goderich. 'The wedding table

DAVID A. GA'LBRAITH
David Archibald Galbraith of
Varna, stied at St, Joseph's .hosp-
ital, London, .at 11.30 p.m. Satur-
day night •following a month's
illness, in lois 86th year. He was
'born in Stanley townehip, eon of
Sohn Galbraith and his wife Hate
Cameron, and farmed there until
1947. He was a •member of the
Varna Anglican Church and of
the LOOF lodge at Bameefie-1d. In
1925 .he marilled Edith Jane Dow -
son, who survives him. Other
survivors are ,four sisters, Miss
Mary Galbraith and Mrs, Ada
Reid, Seaforths Mrs, John Gem-
einhard, Douglas, Wyoming, and
Mrs, Charles Marks, -Stanley, A
funeral service was held at the
Bayfield Anglican Church Tues-
day afternoon, May 19th by Rey.

service was held by Brucefleld

Except for few weeks in mid-
winter with his /daughter, Mee.
George Carter, he lives alone do-
ing his own ,housework as well
-as tending his garden and straw-
berry patch. The past winter
found him shovelling snow—at
one time upon a ladder helping
to relieve the weight on the back
kitchen roof, He continued to go
deer hunting until some five
years ago.

MRS. JAMES GOON
The death of Mary Olive Ad-
ams, widow -of James Cook, Sea -
forth, occurred at 5.30 Monday
evening in Clinton hospital. She
had been in poor health for more
than a year. She was born In
Hullett and attended Kinburn
school She was in her 71st year.
Mrs. Cook moved to Seaforth in
1951. Her husband died in 1949.
She was a member -of the United
Chtuch. Surviving are a sister,
Mrs. William Ross, Londesboro;
and three brothers, Miller, Ern-
est and Thomas Adams, all of
Seaforth. The remains are rest-
ing at .the G. A. Whitney funeral
home where a service will be
held Thursday at 2 p.m. Rev. J.
C. Britton of Northside United
Church will oft.ic/late and 'burial
will be in Maitlandbank cemet-
ery.

sent when the old steam locomo-
tive, purchased from, the C.P.R.

seum was rolled on to the cem-
ent base at the bacic of the mus-
eum, to become an exhibit of the
Parade of Power section of the
museum.
This trip was arranged by the
historical and research commit-
tee convened by Mrs, Andrew

township, passed away Friday in
South Huron Hospital, Exeter,
in her 85th year. Daughter of
tate late Mr. and Mrs. Jas, Bell
of Heimall -firs, .Mchwen spent
most of her life in this district.
See was a graduate nurse of the
Bujtterwarth hospital Michigan.
Surviving are two sons, James
and Nlugh, two grandchildren,
Malcolm and Katharine 3'1.cBwen,
one brother,- Dr. James Bell, Hen-
sall, and one sister, Mrs, Marg-
aret Doan, Morrill, Alberta. Fun-
eral service was conducted from
the Bonthron funeral home on
Sunday by Rev, C. D. Daniel. in-
terment in Exeter cemetery. The

Bell, he spent his life in this
district, He was a former town-
ship councillor. Surviving is his
wife, the former Ruby Stone,
four sons, James, Murray, Wil-
liam, Graham, at home, two bro-
thers, William R. Bell, Hensall,
Elliott Bell, Toronto, one sister,
Mrs. Jessie Campbell, Windsor,
Funeral was held Wednesday at
the Bonthron funeral home, Hen-
sall. Interment in Exeter cem-
