Fire Threatens
Two Apartments
• Herold Jackson, Seaforth auc-
tioneer, and Thomas Beattie were
driving past Mr, Jackson's apart-
ment house in Egrnonelviile, when
the latter noticed smoke coming
put around the eaves .of the'build-
ing. Mr. Beattie went to warn the
occupants of the two apartments
while Mr, Jackson turned in a
fire alarm about two o'clock on
Monday afternoon. A baby from
one apartment was taken across
the road to a neighbor's house,.
Seaforth rural, fire brigade af-
ter half an hour's work brought
the flames under control, The
bujlding is in Hgmondvilie. Just
outside Seaforth town limit, A
hose was run from the hydrant
at the corner of the recreation
grounds, The RUC ladder truth
was used to lift firemen up to a
second story window and to the
eaves.
Furniture from the lower floor
was removed by neighbors. Neil
Hodgert, truck driver for Wright
& Leybuyn, occupies the down-
stairs. The upper floor was rent-
ed by Mr. Ball, RCAF., and Sam-
na.
Mr. Jaclecon said he could not
understand how the fire could
have started. The 'place was re-
wired six years ago. The fire was
mostly 4n the attic.
It was afterwards found that
•there were 30 amp. fuses upstairs
and the marks of the fire :running
up the wall from the wiring were
visible.
The house was built by the
VanEgmond family in the clays
of the adjacent woolen mill. It
was owned for many years by
the late Leopold Vauigmontl.
Damage to the house is estine
ated at $3,500, as a new woof will
be required, also new joists and
new ceiling upstairs. The house
will have to be redeeorated, There
was insurance on the house, but
it is understood no insurance
was carried by the tenants on
their furniture.
"I just didn't believe it when
Tom told me say house was on
fire," afr. Jackson said, relating
how they were returning from a
business call in Egmondville and
had stopped to enter Main street
from the west at the recreation
ground.
Tom said, "Your house is on
flre."
Harold thought he was fooling,
and watching the traffic, made
the turn on to Main street.
"I really mean it," Tom said.
Harold thought it must be just
smoke from a grass fire, but Bri-
efly stopped the car and backed
up to have a look,
