Iin14P1NG FAITH IN DIM -
CULT TIMES
By Dr. '1. Semple, Sec, Seaforth
and District M4niyterial Assocn,
We all know the old homely
lines: "It's easy enough to be
ipleasant when life flows like a
song," at Is easy enough to be
loyal to Christ and His truth
when they make no particular
•demands° The test comes when
fair weather changes into a
storm; when loyalty 19 going to
cost courage, In popularity, in.
material advantage.
Someone said of William 111,
Dodd, American ambassador to
Germany during •the years pre.
ceding World .War II, ":HIe kept
the democratic faith in ail age
of •betrayal." A noble tribute!
Ilow shall we earn .the judgment
"HIe kept the Christian faith in
an age of betrayal of the faith"?
The first necessity .for being
loyal in a crisis is to have a
deeply rooted faith. InCharles
xiugsley's novel Hypatia one of
the characters says "I don't
want to possess a ;faith; I (want
a faith to possess me," It is not
enough ,to possess a faith, Most
of us do that, We have accepted
Ideas and opinions and stand-
ards that have .come to lis with
the authority of tradition and
personal relationship. These do
very well when "life flows like a
song". But when the ,day of trial
comes, 'when the cost of keeping
loyal mounts up, we need a faith
that possesses us.
The second necessity. Loyalty
in a crisis is a matter of holding
on to Ohristian standards of per-
sonal living. That means using
our eyes to see the delusions of
the seduottve ,arguments for ac-
cepting lower standards, A char-
acter in Wafter .Scott's novel,
"The Bride of Lammermoor" •pic-
tures the danger of moral confu-
sion, i41e says:
"Whenever I am about to com-
mit any folly, the devil persuades
.me that it is the most necessary,
gallant, gentlemanlike thing on
earth, and I am up to the saddle
girth in bog before I see •that
the ground is soft."
What a vivid picture of a uni-
versal experience of temptation!
Drink, sharp ,business, the selfish
duty of "looking after number
one"—all •these can be made to
look necessary, gallant things to
do, when they are gold -decked
lies, The only refuge is to have a
cure standard of reference In Je-
sus, to ask of each proposal:
How does it seem when set al-
ongside of Jesus' standard of
life?
The third necessity: Times of
oriels bring the test of being lo-
yal to Ohristian values In our
whole .social and economic life,
Jesus gave us no blueprint to
follow in every complex modern
situation; he did set before us
great values that come first if we
are truly his followers. Try the
following on your imagination,
Dr. Butterick says that the final
appraisal of every life will be by
this question: "Did you see
things or faces?" IIe illustrates
by saying: "Some business men
see only things, profits, reports,
machines. Others see faces, the
faces of men who work for ,them,
the faces of people, or people in
sin, people in need. flow will It
affect our thinking and action, if
we, like Him, habitually see
faces instead of things?

The Artificial Breeding service of this farmer own-

mean to your livestock operations.
While the demand for our service has constantly
risen, there are still many more cattle owners that
could benefit by using our services.
An example of our Hereford bulls. We expect bim
to be in service soon.
Charles Anxiety 8M Polled
Top priced bull at the Ontario Bull Sale held early
in March. The reason he brought the top price is
because he has excellent conformation and his of-
ficial rate of gain while on test for 168 days was 3.09
lbs. per day, for life time 2.97 lbs. per day, and he
finished his test period weighing 1280 lbs. This is
the highest lifetime gain and finishing weight of any
bull performance tested in Ontario to date.
