There's Someone At The Door
(By Rey. Dr, Semple)
Fie knocked at my door, 1 an-
eivored iulpattonaly, for I ,was
very busy in the house,
"Have you any room?" he
asked.
"No," I said sharply, "We
don't let rooms here."
"Any room would do," he
said, "I wouldn't be any trouble,"
"I haven't a room to spare In
the house," I answered, "not one
that would suit you, .anyhow."
"I would clean'it up myself 42
it needed it," :he urged, "and I
would keep it clean. I'm used to
Um:
I hesitated a moment. Then I
said, decidedly; "No, I've no
room. Good day!"
He went down the path, and at
the gate he turned and smiled at
me. "If, at any time, you find
You Have room and want me," 11e
said, "I'll come."
m * w
I watched him go down .the
street, and twice I nearly called
him back, but 4 was too ashamed.
You see, I had a room, hut I
kept the door looked on it, for it
was all cluttered up with rubbish
that I had gathered through the
years. S hadn't dared to go into
that roans for a long time, 'but
after he had gone I went up-
stairs and unlocked the door,
The place was In a frightful mess
with all sorts of things, broken,
soiled, or torn, piled together,
and the dust and dirt was thick at the door!
upon it. I wouldn't have hall an)",
one sae it like that for worlds
least of all hien. And I knew
could never. make 1t decent,, I
hadn't the heart to start on it.
"I wosSZcl clean it, gip myself if
it needed it, 0)14 worulti km it
oieati, Teta used 'IQ that,"
That is what lie • saicd. I sat
down on a box and nearly cried
my eyes out. Thou 1 got up and
went out, and locked the door.
"It's no use," I said to myself,
"I've got to get on with my
work."
,u M x'
It's nearly a week since he
camp, and went, and I've tried to .
carry on .as usual, But I don't
think I can go on like this much
longer, I can't get hint eat of any
mind. I want frim to Some, but I
can't bear to think of him seeing
that room, let alone living in it,
And, if he came, that would have
to be his room.
I can see him now as he stood
at my door; I can hear his voice;
I remember every word he said:
"17, at any time, you find that
Von have room anti scant me, Tll
come,"
"Lard, I do want Thee to come,
and I have got a room—a dread -
fat
room, not fit t Eor anyone e to
live in. But, 3f Thou wilt take it,
it is Thine. Lord Jesus, come
quickly!"
