VARNA
The Varna W. A. of the United
Churelt was held in the church on
June 23rd with 18 ladies present.
Mrs. Anson Coleman, Pres„ presid-
ed, the tweeting opened with the
theme song. ,Hymn 366 "Take my
life and let it be", was sung. Psalm
745 was read responsively, Mrs. Pitt
read thoughts on the lesson followed
by prayer. Rachel Johnston read
minutes of last meeting in absence
of Mrs. 3. Allington, and Mrs, Bob
Taylor seconded theta. Roll call for
next meeting to be answered, where
will we go on our next bus 'trip?
Moved and seconded, that we hold
our baking sale at Bayfield on the
afternoons of July 11 and Aug. 16th
in the town hall, Mrs. John McAsh
to look after posters for sale. Moved
and seconded we neve a W. A. picnic'
on our next meeting on July 23 and
ask the men and children to supper
at 7. Discussion followed about a
sacred concert, it was left to the en-
tertainment committee. Mrs, Pitt,
MTs. Ed Foster, Mrs. Wilfred Chut-
tet' to look after flowers for church
for July. Hymn 376 was sung "Blest
be the tie that binds", followed by
W. A. Prayer.
A bus load of 33 ladies from
Varna spent a day recently in De-
troit and Greenfield Village, all re-
ported a Very enjoyable day, one to
be remembered.
Don't forget our baking sale at
Bayfield on July 11 and Aug. 16th.
Haying is the order of the day and
everybody is busy.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Peres Johnston
and Robert, spent the weekend in
Wellington. Miss Phyllis Johnston
returned with them after a week's
holiday.
The Varna .Mission Band and
Baby Band picnic will be held on
July 3 at Lions' Park, Seaforth, all
mother's and children are cordially
invited.

Mr. Andrew Doig of Egntondville
accompanied by his mother and

on Sunday in the vicinity, 'Mt. John
Doig of Grand Rapids, also was a re
cent guest with his mother and sist-
er.

LONDESBORO
Mr. and Mrs. V. Townsend, Tor-
onto, are visiting with Mr. Robert
Townsend and other friends in the
community.
Rev, W. J. Rogers, Hensall, will
take the church services of the Lon-
desboro appointment during the
month of July. .
Mr, and Mrs, E. Dewar. Ottawa,
are visiting with Mrs. Dew•ar's sist-
ers, Mrs. C. Watson and Mrs. W.
Gorier and families for a few days
and took in the Lyon and Lear pic-
nic held on July 1st.
Mrs. B. Allen visited with friends
at Egmondville on Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Radford and
boys left on Sunday for a trip to
the West Coast. They will take in
the Calgary Stampede on their tvay.
Rev. S. H. Brenton preached his
farewell sermon here on Sunday
morning to a well filled church. His
goodbye massages to all the differ-
ent departments of the church were
very touching and deeply felt
throughout the large congregation
assembled. During the four and one-
half years of service both Mr. Bren-
ton and his wife have made many
friends and will be greatly missed
especially amongst the younger
people. Mr. Brenton's next pastor-
ate will be in Woodstock. They left
here Monday for the West where
they will visit relatives during their
holidays.
Miss Vina Knox, Toronto, visited
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.
Knox.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Brunsdon, son
of Mr. Artie Brunsdon in the West,
visited last week with his grand-
mother and other friends itt Clinton.
CONSTANCE
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lawson motor-
ed to Oshawa on Thursday and were
guests of Mrs. Lawson's brother, Mr.
Lawrence Taylor and Mrs. Taylor.
They also visited friends at New-
market.
Rev. Stanley Brenton preached his
farewell sermon in Constance
Church on Sunday afternoon. Dur-
ing their four and a half years of
his ministry here, he and Mrs. Bren-
ton have endeared themselves to all
who had the pleasure of knowing
them. They were presented with a
lace tablecloth. The best wishes of a
host of friends follow them to their
home at Woodstock.

Mr. and Mrs, Frank Riley motored
to Toronto on Tuesday, they were
accompanied by their daughter
Grace, who is taking a teacher's
ecurse at Bloor College. Miss Miley
is engaged to teach at Summerhill
School, and will commence her du-
ties on the reopening of school in
the Pall.
Mr. and Mrs.. Borden Brown and
daughter Joyce Elaine attended a
Bailey reunion picnic at Hanover on
Tuesday.
STANLEY
The ratepayers of S. S. No, 1,
Stanley, gathered at the home of
Mrs. Alvin Rau on Friday night,
June 27th to honor NIrs, Rau who
has taught faithfully itt that school
for the past fifteen years, and who
has now chosen to 'retire .from the
teaching profession, A social even-
ing of singing, dancing and playing
cards was held. At 12 o'clock every-
one was requested to assemble in
thedining room where Mrs. Rau was
asked to sit before the table upon
which were displayed the gifts of
the section, in appreciation of her
15 years teaching their children so
well. Mr. Charles Rau read the ad-
dress after which Mrs. Rau was ask-
ed to accept the following gifts as a
small token of the high esteem in
which she is held in that section: An
Original Kieninger and Obergfell
400 -day gold clock, a silver cream
and sugar set on tray, and an Otta-
wa Valley pure wool blanket, be-
sides other gifts from individuals.
Mrs. Rau made a fitting reply. A
sumptuous lunch was served by sev-
eral ladies of the section. The fol-
lowing is the address:
Mrs, Alvin Rau:, We your friends
of S. S. S. No. 1. Stanley are gath-
ered here tonight to express to you
our heartfelt gratitude. You have
labored day after day for 15 years
to teach our children. This you did
very well. The pupils who have been
in your classes as well as their par-
ents will always remember you.
As a token of appreciation, please
accept these gifts from the ratepay-
