The lin- .solidifies in the air and be ooutes silk With which tete silk- worm winds itself a cocoon. Its 1664 1)r, Robert Hooke, ata English scientist, stated that one day a way wool[ he found to pro- duce a sticky liquid ,similar to that of the sills -worts, which could be forced through tiny holes to solidify into threads for w eaving. But it eras not till 1894 that Sir Joseph Swan- tool: out a patent for such a man-made fibre. He made it front -wood pulp, and he intended to use it not in textiles, but as filaments for electric light bulbs. Other ecientists. among them Charles Croes and Hrnest Bevan, patented other processes, the mail[ principle of which was that liquid was forced through tiny holes known as spinnerets to solidify in continuous threads. The next thing was to "inti a way of collecting these threads, and the solution to this problem -was found by an Englishman named Charles Topham. •Riding Itis bicycle -in the vain one day, he noticed how the mud flew outwards from his bicycle when as it went round. He conceived the idea of intro- ducing the thread -making liquid into a hollow cylinder shaped like a tin can, the sides of which were perforated by the tiny holes or spinnerets through which the liquid had to be forced. Ile then span this cylinder round inside a second cylinder which re- mained still. 'This spinning flung the thread as it oozed out of the holes on to the inside wall of the second cylinder, where it wound itself round and round. quite ,untangled and ready to be used for cloth. 'This device became known as -Topitant's Spinning Pot." Explaining how it worked. eilk- spinner Henry Mallinson said that without it the rayon industry just wouldn't exist today, "It vias this British invention," he said, "which 'vas fatten to America in 1910 and actually founded the successful and flow enortnone, T"ni•r.t Stat"; rayon industry. The most publicized feature of Easter Island is its great stone images. These are made of a -soft tufa, easily cut with stone tools. Practically all of them were taken from a single quarry in the crater of an extinct volcano, Rano-raraktt. This quarry stilt contains figures in all stages of manufacture, •ucluding one giant sixty feet long. Unfinished images indicate that the ancient sculptors carved the face first, then front and sides of the body. Lastly the image was tttt,lt 'its ,,'t i de- tached. A great [lumber of hinges w enc et up on the slopes 1: Rano- rarakll, apparently along the lines of ancient roads which i arliated from the crater to different dis- tricts of the island. Other images were set 119 on the nlortuery plat- forms of the various clans. The stone from which the Easter Island images .Were [made was com- paratively light. The largest images removed front the quarry weigh twenty to thirty tons, but all these were set up near • the crater. The platform images, although often 12- to 15 feet high, Weigh only three or four .tons, and their size dinin- fishes regularly with the distance to which they had to be trans- ported. Most of the way front the quarry was downhill and the images - were probably milled along on wood- en skids or ,ititpty on their own backs, 'T}terc is good evidence that the backs of the figures [!'etre carv- ed alter they had been set tip, thus obliterating any scars received tri transport. --Brom "Arts of the South Seas," by Ralph Linton and Paul S.
