DUBLIN
The following is from the Montreal
Star:
Rev, Brother Augustine Cronin,
principal of St. Aloysius School and
a well known figure in Montreal ed-
ucational circles, died in St. Mary's
Hospital. Death followed a short ill-
ness. He was 46. Born in Dublin,
Ont., the son of the late Mr, and
Mrs, James Cronin, Brother Augus-
tine entered the Presentation Bro-
thers Novitiate at Longueuil, Que,,
On completion of his religious
training and after having taught in
several Montreal schools, he was ap-
pointed principal successively of
Canon O'Meara Academy, Daniel 0' -
Connell High School and Catholic
High School. In June 1944 he was
appointed Provincial of the Present-
ation Brothers in Canada, a post he
occupied until last year.
In 1049 the Council of Public In-
struction conferred upon him the
Diploma of Merit, First class, in re-
cognition of his contribution to
Catholic education.
Surviving are a brother, Lorne
Cronin, and a sister, Mrs, E. Hallin-
an, Detroit.
The funeral took place with a Sol-
emn High Mass of Requiem at St.
Aloysius Church, Bishop Whalen of-
ficiated. A great number df clergy in
the sanctuary. Interment in Present-
ation Brothers' plot in Longueuil,
Quebec.
The following, tribute appeared on
the Sports page of The Star:
There is sadness in Catholic School
circles today, Brother Augustine is
dead at the age of 46. He was an in-
stitution around Montreal. a great
lovable teacher, who knew how to
handle boys better than many we
knew. He was head of Catholic High
Sohool in the years of its athletic
greatness. He field that no boy was
wholly bad, he never raised his hand
to one in his life. He could cajole
work out of the most laggard. Years
ago he was at Daniel O'Connell when
our tykes started to school, like many
other boys they idolized him. He was
a great teacher judged by any stand-
ard, a thoughful man of many facets,
