W.M.S. Thank -Offering Service
At the W.M.S. Thank offering ser-
vice in the United Church on Sunday

K. Grierson, ordained minister and
medical missionary, who had spent
a period of 37 years in. North Korea.
Dr. Grierson is the last surviving
member of a group of live who began
the 'work in 1898. The speaker gave a
challenging message in which he (a)
Enlisted our sympathy and prayers
for this distressed country and its
churches. (b) Elevated our opinion of
Korean people and (c) Gave a bird's
eye view of the work done by the
United Church in North Korea. The
choir chose the anthem "God's Lovely
Dwellings," solo parts being taken by
Mrs. R. Broderick arid Mr. S. Ronnie.

BARBERRY AND
BUCKTHORN CONTROL
Stem and leaf rust on grain an-
nually cause serious damage to Ont-
ario grain crops and it is now recog-
nized that common Barberry and
Buckthorn are the host plants on
which rust spores live over winter.
Hence, the eradication of Common
Barberry and Buckthorn is the key
to losses from rust of cereal grains.
For this reason. more and more at-
tention is being paid to this problem,
and farmers all over the Province, in
co-operation with Weed Inspectors
and other officials of the Department
of Agriculture have been making
great strides in this work.
Even so, officials of the Crops
Branch of the Ontario Department of
Agriculture say much remains to be
done, and some of the new chemical
weed killers give promise of .being
effective in making the job easier.
Farmers in Eastern Ontario had
the •opportunity o'0 seeing how effect-
ive some of these chemicals are on
October 17th. The occasion was the
Eastern Ontario Crop Improve-
ment Field Day being held on the
farm of former Dominion Cerealist,
Dr. L. H..Newn'lan, near Merriekville.
The counties of Leeds, Lanark, Gren-
ville, and Carleton have the major
part of the Barberry and Buckthorn
to be found in Eastern 'Ontario, so the
location of this field day is ideal.
'F'or demonstration purposes about
100 barberry and buckthorn shrubs
were treated on September 9 with
dry Sodium Chlorate. Then some 80
rods of heavy growth in a fence row
were treated later -in the month with
2-4-D plus the Sodium mixture. This
is a system which has givers good Te -
sults in many roadside treatments.
Then there will be plots where other
approved methods of eradication will
be used as well. This field day should
bring together all those interested in
every phase of the eradication pro-
ject and provides a real opportunity
for farmers in Eastern Ontario to
get full 'details on how they can help
to remove the rust menace to our
grains.
Fanners in other areas can get full
information on Barberry and Buck-
thorn eradication from their Agricul-
tural Representative.
The Voice Of Temperance
You don't have to drink—Of
course the trade wants you to
drink to increase their profits, but
you don't have to drink. And the
government has provided all sorts
off opportunities far drinking, but
you don't have to drink. The smart
set may betray themselves by
drinking but you don't have to
drink. A certain brewery may ad-
vertise that men off distinction
drink their brand—but you don't
have to drink. To be a successful
ealesman-you don't have to drink.
No matter what the others do you
don't have to drink. Always and
everywhere and whoever you are,
you don't have to drink.—Advt,
