Friday last at the C.N.E. and spent
the weekend with relatives in Harm-
ilton, Ridgeway and Fort Erie.
Mr. and 'Mrs. 3. Cooper Jr. spent
a day last week at the C.N.E.
Miss Gail Ann Gackstetter spent
a few days recently with her grand-
parents Mr. and Mrs, W. Harney in
Exeter.
Miss E. .Shultz of London spent a
couple of days last week with her
parents Mr. and Mrs, L. Shultz.
'Mr. and Mrs. Ross Love and fam-
ily spent Friday last at the C.N.E.
Mr. Marcus Balker, formerly of
Holland, who has spent the past year
in this community left on Saturday
last for the `Western Provinces. Mar-
cus has n'iade many friends in the
church here and community and we
wish him luck in his new surround-
ings.
Hillsgreen United Church
To Observe Anniversary
The congregation of Hillsgreen
United Church will observe their an-
nual fall anniversary on Sunday next
•at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. The guest
speaker at the morning service will
be Rev. Wm. Mair, M.A., Thames
Road, past chairman of the Huron
Presbytery. The music will be furn-
ished by the Zurich Male Oetette ac-
companied by Mrs. Oesch. The
evening speaker will be Rev.
Rogers B.A., B.D. of Hensall, pre-
sent chairman of the Huron Presby-
tery. The music will be furnished by
the Hillsgreen Ladies' Choir. Services
will be withdrawn at Kippen.
Mr. Glen Lockhart and daughter
of Clinton called recently on Mr, and
Mrs. J. Cochrane.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Coward and
family of Renock were Sunday visit-
ors with Mr. and Mrs. Archie Par-
sons.

W.M.S. Meet
The W.M.S. met on . Thursday
afternoon last at the home of Mrs.
A. Gackstetter with twenty-five pre-
sent. The president, Mrs. W. Work-
man,
orkman, presided and opened the meet-
ing with hymn No. 249. Mrs. Her-
bert Jones read the scripture and
Mrs. Hinton then led in prayer.
Hymn No. 578 was sung. Mrs. A.
Gackstetter reported that she and
Mrs. A. Parsons had made eight
calls on shut-ins and newcomers to
the community. •Mrs. Hinton and
Mrs. Robt McGregor were appointed
as visiting committee for September.
The flower committee for the church
for October are to be Margaret Sin-
clair and Mrs. N. Diechert. Brief
plans were made for the birthday
party to be held in November. Two
neighboring auxilaries to be invited.
Mrs. Workman gave an interesting
article on the origin of the hymn
"Abide with Me". Mrs. Peck gave an
instrumental, Drink to me only with
Thine Eyes. Mrs. A. !Gackstetter gave
the study, choosing for her topic
parts of the late Rev. Walter Main's
last sermon, taken from the mem-
orial booklet, The closing hymn was
379. Lunch was served by Circle 3.
The Voice Of Temperance
In it's last issue Toronto's week-
ly periodical, Saturday Night •stat-
ed that whereas in 1937 the people
of the United 'States drank 28
times as much beer as the people
of Canada, in 1947 the ration had
changed to 13 times as much. The
Canadians are catching up with
the Americans. Their ratio of
drinking now equals their ratio of
population. They are just as heavy
drinkers as their American cous-
ins. This is nothing to boast about.
All it proves is that we are as
foolish and as wasteful as our
neighbor and headed for the same
kind of trouble.—Advt.
