The meeting opened with the'Ode followed b the 'Lord's Prayer. The song by Bells' was sung and the roll call VMS answered by "Paying of Membership fees". The business period was conducted by 'the. President, Mrs, 13i11 Pepper. The annual reports were given by various committees and . plans were made for a party to be field in Londesboro Hall an Dec, 30, The program consisted of read- ings by Mrs, 'Gregor McGregor and Mrs. Alice Lawson, A pret- tily decorated Christmas tree was then unloaded and each member received a nice gift, A vote of thanks was extended to Mrs. ,Bill Pepper for her' faithful work as President this year. The meeting closed by singing "Sil- ent Night" and repeating the Homemakers' Prayer, A lovely lunch was served by group 2. WALTON A reception was held in Wal- ton community hall in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Byerman, newly weds. The evening was spent in dancing to the music of Wilbee's Orchestra, Mr. and Mrs, Byerman were presented with a purse of money. A dainty lunch was served by the women. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kirkby celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary this week. Some of their friends and neighbours were present for the occasion.. Mr. and Mrs. Kirkby have two sons, Douglas and Herbert. The W. A. of Walton United Church met on Thursday •after- noon in the basement with a good attendance, The meeting opened with the President, Mrs. Love presiding. Opening hymn 61 was sung. Scripture reading, John 3: 1-16. Secretary's report was read and approved, also thankyou cards. Treas. report was given by Mrs. A. Coutts. Several items of business, were discussed and this showing a very successful year. Meeting closed with the W. A. theme song followed by prayer, BLAKE Butchering is a farmers' job just -now in the community. The Blake School, No. 9, plan on holding their Christmas con- cert on Friday evening, Dec, 17 at 8 o'clock. Everyone welcome, small admission. Mr. and Mrs. R. Desch visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Oesclt on Goshen Line North. Miss Joan McClinchey of near Varna visited at the home of her aunt, Mrs. E. Erb and fam- ily. • Mr. H. McBride and boy friend of London Visited at the home of his n:u'ents, Mr. and Mrs. R. McBride. Mr. and ids::. E. Faber and fancily of Kippen visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. Desch. LADIES' AID The annual meeting of the ytear ryas: held in the schoolroom r oam of the church with the Pres., Mrs, H. Whyte in the chair, Mrs, Kerslake Opened the meeting by reading the Christmas Story. The annual reports were given by the Secretary and Treasurer. They showed a. very successful year. The big project for the Year, new carpet far the church, had been aeeomplished. Mrs. H. R. Scott then brought in the re- port of the nominating' commit- tee with a full slate of ofiteets as follows: Hon. Pres„ Mrs. H, E. Smith; Pres., Mrs. H. A. Wright. Mrs. Campbell installed the officers in an im- pressive ceremony. Mrs. Ritchie moved a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring officers. Mrs. J. H. Scott gave a most delightful Humorous reading entitled, "Sal- ly Anne's Experience". A very .instructive film was shown by Mrs, Russell on Tuberculosis, stressing the Rehabilitation of the Patient. Several Christmas carols were sung during the meeting. A social half hour was then enjoyed, presided over by the executive. STAFFA Farm Forum n'let in the Staffa hall on Friday evening and list- ened with much pleasure to a talk by the guest speaker Mr. Hamilton, zone forester of Stratford, who spoke on "Refor- estation", and presented slides. Each forum contributed a num- ber to the program. HENSALL The regultir meeting of the Parr Line Farm Forum was held at the home of Mrs. Ida Dick on, Monday, Dec. 6 with 29 present. The topic for the evening dis- cussion "National Health Insur- ance". In answer to the first question as to what were the medical services in this com- munity. Huron County is served by five hospitals, County Health Nurses, T.B. Chest X -Rays. In regards to hospitalization insur- ance there are the following Co - Op Medical Insurance, Blue Cross. Following this discussion a recreation period of euchre was held. Prizes for the ladies, Miss Margaret Mousseau; Gents, Ross Love. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Love. RRANK FINSLAND 18 APPO1NTSp JURGE Frank Fingland, Q.C. of Clinton has been appointed }Tut- or county judge by the Domin- ion Department of Justice. He will succeed the late Judge T. M, Costello, whose death resulted from a ear accident, Ott, 29, It is expected Mr. Fiogland will continue to reside in Clin- ton for the present. A native of Hullett twp., ho is 59 years of age. He is a son of the late Mr, and Mrs. John Fingland,He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1922 with the de- gree of Bachelor of Arts, and In 1925 graduated in law from Osgoode Hall. Mr. Fingland was appointed counsel in 1986 in Clinton, after five yeas To onto. Hetvltasr practisedl law in Clinton for the past 26 years. He became a King's Counsel in 1936. During the First World War he served with the Huron (161st) Battalion, later joining the 18th Battalion as it entered France. He has been active in politics, and is the president of the Hur- on riding Liberal Association. At present, he is Clinton town solic- itor, a position he has held for 26 years. Mr. Fingland is a member of Clinton Public School Board. He is a member of Wesley -Willis United Church. His wife is the former Eliza- beth Chowen of Clinton. They have two children: one son, Frank B. Fingland, a graduate of the University of Toronto, who is presently studying for his doctorate in philosophy at the University of London ,(Eng- land); and Catherine, a graduate of London Teachers College, who is presently a student at the University of Western Ont- ario. CROMARTY Cromarty Farm Forum met in Cromarty school Monday even- ing, Dec. 6 and held a discussion dealing with "Health Insurance Plan".. Several interesting facts were gleaned from this very in- teresting discussion. Winners for euchre •were ladies, high, Mrs. Gerald Carey; consolation, Mary Ruth Meikle; Gents, Doug Mc- Kellar; consolation, Bert Riley. Lucky chair, Mrs. Bert Riley. Mrs. Philmore Chapple was in charge. BRODHAGEN Mrs. Rosina Miller and other relatives attended the 60th wed- ding anniversary celebration of her sister, Mrs. Con Schwindt and Mr. Schwindt at Milverton on Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kraus, Raymond and Joannie of Ruth - yen, Mr. Glenn Bennewies of Windsor with Mr. and Mrs. John L. Bennewies. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Elligson, Miss Audrey Hinz and Mr. and Mrs. Brickman of Wartburg ac- companied Mr. Glenn Briekman to. Guelph on Sunday, visiting Mr. and Mrs, John G. Hinz. Mrs. Lorne Wolfe spent a few days with her father, Mr. Joseph Soper in Kitchener, last week. The meeting opened by singing hymn, "0 How Shall I Receive Thee". Scripture read- ing, Isaiah 40: 1-11 'anti prayer. Topic, "Questions about Christ- mas" by Rev. W. Becker. Hymn "Come Thou Expected Jesus". Business -was conducted by the President, Mrs. Fred Young. A donation of 220.00 is to go to- wards tree lights for the church. The Christmas social evening to be held on Dec. 9th including dinner, Birthdays were reported by Mrs. Lew Hicks, Mrs. Oscar Young, Mrs. Clarence Regele, Mrs. Russe 11 Sholdice. The president Mrs, 'Emerson Kyle opened the meet- ing with hymn 59. Mrs. Harold Jones had charge of the scripture and led in prayer. 'Mrs, Edgar McBride reported for the visiting committee. The new visitors are Mrs. John Sinclair and Mrs. Win- stop Workman. Silent prayer was observed for the late Mrs, Steph- enson who was s life members Mrs. Eldon. Jarrett reported for Sunshine committee. Mrs, J. W. McLean, associate members' sec., read an appreciation card from Mrs. Herbert Jones' 'and a thank you note from Mrs, Wm. Bell. Mrs. Morley Cooper gave the trea- surer's report. Mrs. J. W. McLean reported on the Huron Presbyter- ial sectional meeting held recent- ly in Greenway. Thirty moii'ibers answered the roll call. Little Joan Sinclair favored with a musical number. Mrs. Bert Faber report- ed for the nominating committee and stated. Mrs. Emerson Kyle had kindly consented to remain president for another year. Mrs. Kyle thanked the ladies for their loyal support In the past year. Mrs. Johnsou gave a r'epor't on bales. Mrs. R. M. Peck had charge of the study. VARNA A large crowd filled the twp. hall on Wednesday evening last when Mr. Robt. Allen of 'Bruce - field showed his colored pictures of his recent trip to Great Brit- ain which were greatly enjoyed by all, during the intermission a piano duet was played by Gary and Doug MCAsh. A Christmas candle lighting ser- vice followed with. Mrs. Kyle in charge: Prayers were given by Mrs. J. W. McLean, Mrs. Eldon Jarrott and Mrs. W. Workman. The candle lighting followed for Foreign Missions, Mrs. Allan Johnson and Mrs. Wilmer Jones. Mrs. B. McGregor lit one for Miss Ada Sandell,'our prayer partner. Mrs, McAllister lit one for the departed members in the past year, the late Mrs. I. Jarrott, Mrs. G. D. Thomson and Mrs. R. Ste- phenson. Mrs. John Sinclair lett Ma num- ber of Christmas carols and gave the history of each, Joan sang "Away in a Manger." Mrs, E. Kyle thanked all who took part in the meeting and Mrs. R. Consitt ex- tended thanks to the hostess and co -hostess. The closing hymn was 13, and Mrs. Kyle pronounced the benediction. A lovely lunch was served by Circle 2. Pinkney and daughter Doreen of Walker- ton, spent Sunday with Mrs. Pinkney's mother, Mrs. W. H. Pepper. Mrs. Wm. Rohner of Zurich is spending a few days with her sister-in-law, Mrs. A. Rohner. Mr. and Mrs. F. Threlfall of London spent the weekend with their son L.A.O. Threlfall. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fettis spent the weekend in Markdale. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Lobb of Michigan are visiting Mr. Lobb's cousin, Mrs. Geo. Henderson and Mr. Henderson. A reception was held for Mr. and Mrs. Mac Wilson at Sea - forth Arena on Wed. night. A shower was also held in the school room of the church for Mrs Wilson on Tuesday eve of this week. Miss Beth Murdoch, Hamilton, is convalescing at the home of. her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jno. Murdoch after her recent acci- dent. The Woman's Association met in the school room of the church on Tuesday, Dec. 7, with 31 in attendance, Hymn 61 opened the meeting. The scripture was read from Luke 2: 8-20 by Mrs. A. Hart. Mrs. R. Scott took the topic "God's Gift", and led in prayer. 13ymn 57 was sung. Miss 18. Bowoy then took us on an imaginary trip to other coun- tries to see how they celebrate Christmas, Hymn 68 was sung as a Christmas hymn. The presi- dent then took charge. The W. A, creed was repeated in unison. Mrs. W. McBeath gave the sec. report and the roll call was an- swered by "The best Christmas I ever had". Mrs. H. Berry gave the treas. report and offering was received, Thankyou notes were read from Mrs. Snelling, Mrs. II. Aikonhead and Rev. Mr. Burton, Mrs. Trebner reported for the manse committee. Allison, 92, one of tlhe oldest and best known residents of Usborne died at his home on the Thames Road, where he was born and where he lied farmed all his life. His wife, the former Jane B, Monteith, died in 1962. For many years he 'took en act- ive interest in church and com- munity affairs, being the oldest member of Thames Road United Church, an elder for many years; a member of Exeter Fair Board, and was associated with the Us - borne -Hibbert Mutual Fire In- surance Company.
