tit it would be reasonably safe to pre-
dict that no matter what drama, what
thrills, are forthcoming when east and
west meet In the Grey Cup football final,
there will be nothing to excel the ten-
sion of the closing seconds last Autumn,
when Winnipeg Blue Bombers were
within inches • and seconds of snatching victory from defeat
by the east's champion Hamilton Tigers,
Here was a gallant loser racing against the clock that
inexorably ticked off the final seconds. Actually, this mag-
nificent drive started on the Winnipeg five -yard line, with
the score 12:6 in favour of Hamilton. 105 yards away from
the Tiger line, time running out, Bombers followed a trail
blazed by Jacobs, as he daringly hurled pass after pass,
until play had been swept to within the very shadow of the
last Hamilton line of defence, only three yards from their
touch -line, And here carne a finish of such high, throat-
catching drama, we doubt it will ever be equalled,
For, In that last few gripping seeonds, a tie, perhaps
victory for the west, hung in the balance. In one end of the
field, ,the hands of the big electric clock were rolling off
the final seconds of the final minute, Bombers came out
of their huddle.
Tom Casey, all day a sure -handed catcher, slipped around
the end, as Jacobs drifted back. Then he threw his last pitch
of the 46 he had winged up and down the field.
It rose high, and there, in the crisp sunny air of a per -
feat November day, hung both the ball and the Dominion
football title. Casey, right on the Hamilton line, launched
his tall lean form into the air. His fingers just touched the
floating sphere and as they did, Lou Kusserow hit Casey
heavily in the back. His feet off the ground, Casey fell,
The clock has just hit the final second. The game was over.
Not even Hollywood could possibly surpass the dramatic
effect, no matter how earnestly these masters of the screen
might toil to produce a hair-raising climax. It just couldn't
be closer. There just couldn't- be a more gripping finish
to Canada's gridiron classic.

aTellr,ear 'j:
Many fans who tune in my
Monday night fight commentary
over the Du Mont network have
asked me whether accurate judg-
ing of a fight on television is
possible. As a reporter who has
the opportunity of watching the
bouts in the flesh and at the
same time on a television mon-
itor under the ring, I'm in a
position to shed some light on
the qqestion. The answer is that
it is possible, if you know what
to look for and have the back-
ground facts on which to base
competent judgement.
The following tips will help
you to view and judge a fight
on a par with an official at the
ringside, writes Chris Schenkel,
noted sportscaster, in The Police
Gazette.
In the first place, ask of your-
self what you would demand
of a fight official — absolute im-
partiality, We all have our fav-
orite fighters, but strong par-
tisanship will ruin our judge-
ment. A boxer's appearance, his
former occupation, and where
he comes from may tend to in-
fluence us. Roland La Starza,
for example, used to be a but-
cher, and undoubtedly he has
many loyal fans among meat -
cutters. Sportscasters like my-
eelf have had to train them-
selves to be impartial. And
another thing: officials give the
fight their complete attention.
You should do the same.
In the second place it's es-
sential to understand the differ-
ence between the two scoring
systems. Since the first of the
year most states have adopted
t h e National Boxing Associa-
tion's "10 -point -must" system,
but New York continues to ad-
here to i tso wntaoiM taoinn
here to its own system. A good
portion of the bouts you see on
TV originate Tom New York,
so it's well to k n o w how it
works.
New fork officials score the
winner of each round or tally it
even. In addition, one to four
points are credited to the win-
ner of each round. If a boxer
wins by a shade he gets one
point, if by a clear margin two
points, by a wide margin three
points, If the round is com-
pletely one-sided and there is a
knockdown he gets four points.
But — and this is tricky — the
points count only if the fighters
are tied on rounds at the end of
the bout
In the NBA "]0 -point -must"
system the winner of a round
receives ten points on the cards
kept by the judges and referee.
But the loser also receives points
— depending on how good a
show he puts up — up to a ma-
ximum of nine points, For ex-
ample, if one fighter has a de-
cisive edge in a round he gets
ten points, but his foe might be
only credited with eight, or less.
, "I DIDN'T WALK A. MILE TO FEED YOU"—Prancoise Touraton, ,
isn't quite sure that muzzle is enough to discouragea camel
looking for a date for lunch. It was a long walk to the Vincennes
Zoo in Paris, France, and Francoise needs every bite for herself.
Conceivably, a fighter badly
outclassed in a particular round
would receive no points at all,
If the round is considered a
draw, each fighter gets five
points. Total points at the end
of the bout determine the win-
ner, unless there is a knockout.
Scoring isn't just a matter of
blows landed. Judges look for
clean hitting, ring generalship,.
effective aggressiveness and de-
fensive skill..
It takes djx.1Ste a bit of experi-
ence to judge the effectiveness
of a punch. Some of the best
punches do not appear especial-
ly telling. On the other hand,
short, swift uppercuts, blows
landed during in -fighting, are
often more effective than they
seem. Some of the most dram-
atic - appearing punches, like
Kid Gavilan's famous bolo, do
not have much force behind
them. Dont' be misled by loud
thuds. Such blows are often
leather hitting leather, or il=
legal open -glove slaps. If a
fighter's head bobs back the
chances are he has been hit only
slightly or not at all, and is roll-
ing with the punch. Long hair
which flies up e v e r y time a
fighter takes a little punch or
simply moves his head creates
a misleading illusion.
The essence of ring general-
ship is to make your opponent
fight your kind of fight. If a
boxer prefers an aggressive
style he will carry the fight to
his antagonist and consistently
beat him to the punch. If a
counter - puncher, he will be
able to make his adversary lead.
A skilled ring general will
maneuver his opponent into
corners and cause him to make
mistakes.
Effective aggressiveness weighs
heavily with most judges. A
fighter is paid to fight, and an
aggressive boxer is trying his
best to do so by wading in and
slugging. An aggressor does not
pile up points, however, if he
blindly wades into a fusillade
of punches. In championship
fihts, many judges consider that
it is up to the challenger to
carry the fight to the title hold-
er if he is to win the crown.
In judging defensive skill look
for effective clinching when
hurt, blocking and slipping
punches, ducking and parrying.
The master boxer can pick off
blows with arms, elbows or
gloves, yet still remain in posi-
tion to throw potent leather.

Watch for fouls. Major fouls,
sui'l as hitting a man who is
dol. n, or kneeing, may result
in completely disqualifying the
offender, but this is rare. You're
much more likely to spot minor
fouls such as holding, backhand
blows, low punches, kidney and
habbit punches, spinning and
hitting on the break. When seen
by the-' referee they may give
the offender a simple warning,
or the loss of the round,
In watdhing fights on TV it's
helpful to know some of the
lingo of boxing, at least the
names of the basic punches.
Here are some definitions:
e Combination — a sequence or
volley of blows. It is the ability
to put together combinations
that marks the difference be-
tween a novice and a champion.
It was a fast and clever series
of left hooks and rights that
made Joe Louis a great cham-
pion. The most famous and
common combination is "the
old One-two," a left and a right.
Right Cross — crossing the
opponent's left lead with a
straight right hand.
Book — any punch other than
a straight blow. A hook is de-
livered under, or above, a foe's
guard. The left hook is often
used fo put an opponent on the.
canvas, especially if the man
who throws it is a past -master
of the art like Sugar Ray Rob-
inson.
Jab — short, straight punch-
es. The left jab is the opening
gambit -in a fighter's offense.
Many bouts are won on effec-
tive jabbing. A jabbing attack
will keep an antagonist away
and off balance.
To detect a fighter in trouble
--• always the most exciting mo-
ments in a fight -- watch for
"rubber legs," a stationary tar-
get, "pushing" punches, hands
held abnormally low, frequent
clinching if it's not the fighter's
usual style, ineffective flurries
and bad balance.
Remember, it's a difference of
opinion that makes a fight either
in or out of the ring. Almost all
the bouts that end in split de-
cisions- when the judges fail
f0 agree — are evenly matched,
hard-fought' betties. Judges call
a bout as they' see it, but the
opinion of an experienced tele-
vision viewer, while having no
effect on the outcome, can be
as well-founded as that of the
best pre : dionai judge.
