HIGH SCHOOL. NEWS Things were looking up a- round the school at the first of the week with everybody getting out at ,8;30 to "let the painters get a chance at painting the steps for the official opening of the new gymnasium ori Tues- day evening. The guest speaker was Dr. Dunlop, the minister of education. Two busloads of students from grade eleven will leave on Friday morning for a trip to the Royal Winter Fair at Toronto. The election results carne .out Friday at 4 o'clock and every- body rushed into the hall to see who had won. Gordie Rowland got the most votes and also the job of president of the students' council. Joanne Beuermann and Floyd McPhee were elected to the spots of secretary and treas- urer respectively. The campaign that was staged by the various candidates was the best the school had seen for a good many years. The students' council had their first meeting on Tuesday. They looked over various samples of Christmas cards. They .decided to have the first dance as soon as possible after the Christmas exams. With the exams oiily a week away everybody is staying home at nights studying hard, I hope. BRUCEFIELD The Autumn Thankoffering meeting of the Woman's Mis- sionary Society was held Thurs- day evening, Nov. 4th when the Auxiliary entertained the ladies of Varna and Goshen United Churches. Mrs, Robert Allan pre- sided and -Mrs. W. Haugh con- ducted the devotions. Readings were given by Mrs. Pitt, Varna, Mr's. J. Robinson, Goshen, and Miss Stackhouse. A solo by Mrs. J. Cairns, and a musical number by Mrs. W. MCBeath and Miss E. Stackhouse. Mrs. D. Triebner introduced the guest speaker, Mrs. W. Moores, Conference Branch President, who spoke on World Alliance of Reformed Churches, On behalf of the Aux- iliary, Miss E. Bowey moved a vote of thanks to Mrs. Moores. and to all others who contributed to the program. The offering amounted to $104.70. After the singing of a hynm and prayer, a social half hour was spent. The. Woman's Missionary So- ciety of Brucefield Unite d Church held the regular month- ly meeting, Nov. 9th. The Wor- ship Theme, Discovery and Mis- sion was conducted by Mrs. T. B. Baird. Mrs. Robert Allan pre- sided over the business session, when thankyou notes were read from Mrs. A. Farquhar and Mrs. Baird. It was moved and carried that the slate of officers for 1955 be the same as in 1954. of Mrs. A, Zapfe. Mrs. Norman Walker, Temperance Secretary gave a reading, Our Concern. Mrs. Allan thanked all who helped with the Thankofforing meeting. The program, from the study book, The Church in India, chap. 3, The Faiths They Follow, was in charge of Mrs. Baird, Mrs. Dalrymple and Mrs. Cornish. Plans were made for our Christmas meeting which will be held on Dee. 14th, Mrs. Allan closed the meeting with prayer. PUBLIIV On Friday evening about 30 guests surprised Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Jordan, Dublin, on the occasion of their silver wedding day. Mr, and Mrs. Jordan were married Nov. 12, 1929 at St. Co- lumbars Church, St. Columban. by the late Father Dantzer. Mrs. Jordan was the former Mary McIver, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Malver, and Mr. Jordan is the son of the late Mr, and Mrs. William Jordan. Mr. and Mrs, Jordan operated a farm on Highway No. 8 for several years, and in 1935 moved to Dublin where they have been residents ever since. Mr. Jordan is in the trucking business. Progressive euchre was played with Will O'Rourke and Mrs. Mc- Iver, Seaforth, winning the priz- es. Leonard Feeney read an ad- dress of good wishes, Mrs. Mich- ael Nagle presented Mr. and Mrs. Jordan with a silver tea service, and a dozen silver tea- spoons. HENSALL Miss Shirley Chapman, nurse - in -training at Victoria Hospital, London, spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Chapman. James Westlake. son of Mr, and Mrs. Arnold Westlake, Chis- elhurst, who joined the RCAF last March, recently tried his ex- amination and came second with 95 points in a class of 113 at Trenton. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Moir of Strathroy spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs, Wm. Lee and Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Moir. The November meeting of the Arnold Circle Evening Auxiliary of Carmel Presbyterian Church was held at the hone of Illus. Mary Hildebrandt on Monday evening with the President, Mrs. II.
