A building permit was granted to
Mr. L. P. Plumsteel to erect a resi-
dence with garage, 42 x 27, briek
veneer, cost $10,000, at the corner
of James and Adams streets.
Defer Action On Daylight Saving
A resolution was read from Me-
Killop Federation of Agriculture,
signed by Gordon Scott, president,
and Alvin R. Dodds, Sec., asking that
Seaforth not adopt daylight saving
this year as it is a hindrance to farm
labor. After discussion council de-
cided to lay the natter over to next
month to get information about what
nearby towns intend to do, It would
cause hopeless confusion if Seaforth
was the only town in the area to re-
main on standard time.
Pais Debenture Bylaw
Final reading was given to the Dis-
trict High School debentures bylaw
to raise $150,000. A representative
of the Bell, Gouinlock &'Co. firm of
Toronto, Mr. Sinclair, made what he
termed a very attractive offer for
the debentures if council would do
business at this meeting. Council
voted unanimously, however, to call
for tenders by telephone, as other
firms had asked to tender -on it.

MERRY MAIDENS
The Merry Maidens were pleased
that so many members of the Thrif-
ty Kippenettes and Hurondale Clubs
and others enjoyed the beautiful,
coloured educational slides on Home
Landscaping shown through the
courtesy of the Downham Nursery,
Strathroy, Mr. Frank Lee, their re-
presentative for W. Ont. was intro-
duced by Mr. Harold Baker, assist-
ant representative. Mr. Lee explain-
ed very thoroughly how to trans-
plant any shrub, tree or plant. He
named the different types of dwarf
evergreen slumbs for the home's
foundation stressing that the size of
the shrub ten years from now must
always be considered when planting,
and in mature years should never
obstruct light from windows or o'er -
shadow the door.
Colour contrasts can be gained by
planting Japanese Barberry, Polyau
thus roses or shrubs like Golden
Mock Orange and bulbs for early
Spring.
Shrubbery plantings are best
planted on the boundaries of the
property, the foundations of the
buildings and borders of walks or
drives for it is a general rule in
landscape gardening that the cent.
ral part of the lawn should be kept
open. Good plantings relieve the
angularity of the foundation and
round off the corners of the yard.
Always plant two feet from the
foundation for it takes moisture
from the earth. Trees whether speci-
men or several should be a frame
for the home around sides and at the
back.
• The beauty of the roses pleased
as always but the value of the flori-
bunda roses was shown for beddings
and hedges while the climbing roses
add that touch of needed colour to
the hone. The French hybrid lilacs
delight with their beauty but wond-
er of wonders, they do not sucker
like the common lilac.
Fruit was not forgotten with the
dwarf apple and pear trees and the
newer varieties of small fruits. Mr.
Eric Milner thanked Mr. Lee for the
mint of useful information he had
given and said how much the im-
provements of our lawns and borders
would help all Canadians towards
better living. Misses Joan and Lois
Ann Somerville accompanied by
Mrs. L. Pryce delighted all with a
lovely duet; also Miss Betty Simp-
son accompanied by Miss Gladys
Collins, with a pleasing solo. Miss
Jean Steckle, Home Economist, pre-
sented the girls with their spoons,
donated by Mr. R. Savauge and Mrs.

(The Wolf and the Crane
A WOLF once got a bone stuck in his throat. So he went to a Crane
and begged her to put her long bill down his throat and pull it out.
"I'll make it worth your while," he added. The Crane did as
she was asked, and got the bone out quite easily. The Wolf thanked
her warmly, and was just turning away, when she cried, "What
about that fee of mine?" "Well, what about it?" snapped the
Wolf, baring his teeth as he spoke; "you can go about boasting
that you once put your head into a Wolf's mouth and didn't get it
bitten off. What more do you want?'
MORAL.: Many a man who takes long chances has nothing to
show for it afterwards. Isn't it wiser to put part of your
salary, every pay day, into a savings account with
The Canadian Bank of Commerce? Then you will really
be able to laugh at the wolf of adversity.
