the modern power farmer's
answer to
HARDPAN
Lying from 8 to 20 inches below the surface of the land is the reason
why so many Ontario farmers are Plagued with water runoff, soil
erosion, poor root penetration and dry, dusty fields. Years of rolling
over the fields with wheel -type tractors has packed the earth, forming
a layer of hardpan . which is undisturbed by the ordinary
methods of plowing and tilling the soil.
More and more farmers are turning to deep tilling every day. A
Caterpillar Diesel Farm Tractor pulling a subsoiler shank or chisels
on its rugged -duty Caterpillar Tool Bar, breaks up this hardpan,
allowing the land to soak up and store water like a sponge, unlocking
valuable fertilizer elements in the subsoil and allowing plant roots
access to this fertilizer and water.
And what's more, you'll plow, disk, harrow and harvest easier, faster
and better than ever before when you have a Caterpillar Diesel
Tractor. Every day you spend on the job you'll accomplishmore with
fuel savings up to 80%,
Remember, too, that the long, broad tracks on the Caterpillar Tractor
tread lightly on the soil -- they actually pack the soil less than a
man walking.

FROM HALIFAX TO SASEBO
A fellow member of the crew of
L. S. Lorne Goudie's ship wrote the
story in verse of their voyage from
Nova Scotia to Japan.
We set sail from Halifax,
One sunny April day
And hundreds gathered m1 the pier,
To cheer ns o11 our way.
The HURON was the drat to slip,
Tears started rolling fast.
She pulled well up the harbor,
As IROQUOIS steamed past.
When we sailed by the Sambro Light,
A sight tint's dear to all,
We got the orders 'Batten Down
As darkness soon began to fall.
It was just six days later,
When we pulled in to Kingston,
]And brightly shone the sun),
To the joys of everyone.
As we sailed out their harbor,
With Huron - our trailing pal,
We headed on a southward course,
For the Panama Canal.
Though many had made this trip before
To some it was unite new.
We gathered on the Upper neck.
To watch the ships pias through.
Two days were spent in Panama,
And soon we were on our way.
Then we strucka northward course.
For Manzanilla Bay.
The tithe in there went swiftly by,
Once again we were on our w4Y,
Though this time we were headed,
Por the good old ,U. S. A.
Up the harbor to San Pedro,
The Iroquois did sail.
Our hearts were set upon one thing
It was, "Our precious mail".
Two days wore spent in this fair port,
We did the best wo could,
Some got as far as Long Beach,
Others L. A. and Hollywood.
Then across the 13100 Pacific,
The two destroyers swiftly sped.
And on a Monday morning,
We sighted Diamond Head.
'Phe Unlit girls were on the docks,
When our lines had gone ashore.
With like's and Lei's and grass skirts,
Now who could ask for more ?
Five full days we spent in Pearl,
With so many things to see.
Like tours around the Island,
And the Beach of Waikiki.
On dune the fourth of /53,
We Left their native shore,
Out the narrow harbor,
To sail the sea once more.
We stopped a while in Kwajalein,
The Isle of swaying palm.
But early in the evening.
We sailed again for Guam.
While wo were there a signal came,
"Make the trlp as fast as you can".
Now we are here to do our bit,
In SASEBO, JAPAN.

The Cock
and the Jewel
A COCK, scratching the ground for something to
eat, turned up a Jewel that had by chance been
dropped there. "Hol" said he, "a fine thing you are, no
doubt, and, had your owner found you, great would
his joy have been,,,But for Incl give me a single grain
of corn before all the jewels in the world."
MORAL: It's far more important to have the
