HULLETT
On Monday, March 9th, the Fire-
side Farm Forum met at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Taylor with
23 adults present. The topic was
"More Attractive Farmsteads." ,(1)
Of course farmers and their famil-
ies admire and appreciate an at-
tractive farmstead, and realize it
adds to the beauty, attraction and
value of the community. To own
such a home adds to the confidence
and morale of the people and fre-
quently helps in keeping the young
people on the farm, (2a) Farm
home improvements that can be
made with little cash outlay include
cutting the grass about the house,
having neat fences, nailing loose
boards on barn,• outbuildings, gravel
lanes, plant flowers and shrubs,
clear orchards of dead limbs and
trees, place fawn implements in
sheds or near barn when not in use,
using paint for trimming if a little
outlay would make much improve-
ment. (b) As to the costly iln-,
provements they can be made grad-
ually if the individual's finances
permit. (3a). The forum members
have made improvements in the
past three years and when they have
money to spare will, no doubt,
make much more. In the thirties
farmers had such a struggle to sur-
vive many places were so sadly in
need of repairs that only lately
could they spend much for beauty
and now again farm prices are fall-
ing in comparison with their outlay.
'(b) A rural beautification project
would serve a very useful purpose
in this community. Many haven't
spare a honey to spend on expensive
improvements. Farmers have a
heavy outlay for necessary ex-
penses.

INDEXES SHOW
iMPLEMENT PC`
AT LOW LEVEL OF INCREASE
That implement prices have been kept at a low level is clearly shown by
the comparison of Dominion Bureau of Statistics index figures, which give
an increase iii "all commodities" since 1941 of 82.3% as against an increase
in a comparable index for Massey -Harris implements of only 66.5 'x. This
low percentage of increase, too, is shown in the face of an increase in the
index figure for materials of 93.9% and of Massey -Harris hourly rates of pay
of 165% as can be seen by referring to the chart shown above.
Also, the indexes show that while farm implements have only increased
66.5% there has been an increase in the price of farm products of 93.3°0 and
the scarcity of farm labour has caused farm wage rates to climb to 175.3%.
The partial absorption of the increased costs of materials and labour has
been made possible by the continued great world demand for farm mechan-
ization giving a volume that permits a low ratio of selling expenses and
high operating efficiency in manufacturing.
