HENSALL COUNCIL
PROTESTS SUGAR IMPORTS
The Council of Hensall wishes to
point out to the Canadian Govern-
ment that growers' returns for sug-
ar beets' and other .payments made
by the processors to factory and
weigh station workmen, railways,
truckers etc., are a valuable source
of revenue in the integrated econ-
omy of our community. In the last
three years this industry has distri-
buted on the average, $11 million
per year in Southwestern Ontario.
Our urban and farmer citizens
understand that the Ontario beet
sugar industry, which has thrived for
half a century, will probably not op-
erate next year unless some meas-
ures are adopted to stop the flood of
foreign refined sugar which has de-
prived the Ontario -made product of
its traditional home markets of Tor-
onto -Hamilton -Windsor.
Without the menace of foreign re•
fined sugar, the domestic beet sugar
industry heretofore has had a sure
market within its own country. In
these days of international instabili-
ty this is the only market we can Con-
trol. There has never been a surplus
of heat sugar, and until now grow-
ers have been assured of a cash re-
turn for every ton of their crop har-
vested.
Besides the stability of this do-

Wilmore Scott who passed away 3
years ago, Jan. 10th, 1950.
Three years have passed and gone,
Since one we loved so well,
Was taken from our hone on earth,
With Jesus Christ to dwell,
The flowers we place upon her grave
May wither and decay
But the love for her who sleeps
beneath
Shall never fade away
-Sadly missed by husband
family.

But still the vacant chair
Recalls the love, the voice, the smile,
Of the one who once sat there.
-Ever remembered by daughter
Ruth, son-in-law Ken and grandchild-
ren -Bev and Gary.

mestic industry, the part it played
during food -short war years will
never be forgotten. Ontario grown
beet sugar was badly needed by
Canadian consumers when submar-
ines effectively stopped inbound
boats carrying cane sugar from the
tropics. The war emergency need
for this domestic source of supply
may occur again.
For these reasons, which are a
few of many, we the Council of
Hensall unanimously beseech the
Government to take whatever steps
are necessary in stopping foreign
refined sugar produced by cheap na-
tive labour from ruining Ontario's
beet sugar industry,
