social with Miss Myrtle Carter in
charge. The basement of the church
was 'prettily decorated for the occa-
sion. Those in costume "marched
around the room several times while
the judges, Miss S. Wood, Miss M.
!Gillespie and the Rev, T.A. Carmich-
ael selected the winners. Best dress-
ed girl, bliss Lois 0ilcGavin; best
dressed boy. Mr. Jack Cheoros; best
comic costume, Miss Vera Mole. The
prize for the contest was won by
Miss Margaret Beatty, Candy and
apple's were then served, followed by
singing God Save the King.

The regular meeting of the W.M.S.
was held in the vestry of the church
with the vice president, Mrs, Robert
lecGlonigle, in the chair. The meet -
mg opened by singing hymn '221516 -after
which Our Creed was ,repeated in un-
ison. The prayer of General Thanks-
giving was also read. Miss Mabel
'Cameron Teed the devotional leaflet.
[Hymn 479, "God loved the world of
sinners lost." Mrs. C. A. :Malcolm
presided during the business period,
Mrs. W. F. 'McMilian gave the treas-
urer's report. A leaflet on Christian
Stewardship ,by Mrs. Ih .Chesney, Sr

-"Jesus Thou Joy of Loving Hearts."
Mrs. James Brown closed the .meeting
with prayer.
WILLIAM HARTRY
'Following an illness of six weeks'
duration, ,lr. William Hartry passed
away on 'Sunday at his. home on
Church street in his Sand year. Mr.
pantry was one of the best known
and oldest residents of Seaforth and
his passing is regretted by a wide
circle of (friends. Bonn at Greenbank,
Dec. 113512, he was ,married Ito Jane
Armstrong of Belgrave in 11379. For
a number of years they lived in Brus-
sels, and came to Seaforth in 11836,
where Mr. Hartry was connected with
the furniture factory for many years.
!Horticulture was Mr. IHartry's great
hobby and interest and for the past
eighteen years he was a director of
the Ontario Horticultural Society of
which be 'pec one of the founders
twenty -Six years ago, and had held
many exe'cu'tive positions at various
times including the office of president.
His long experience made him an au-
thority on the sulb'ject of plants and
flowers and his advice was fre'quently
sought by private individuals as well
as on the lecture platform, Mr, Ear -
try was a member of the Collegiate
Board for fifteen years and for the
past twenty years had been on the
public library board, For thirty-five
year, he had been a member of the
Trustee Board of the Methodist
and later North Side United Church,
IIe was town assessor for seven years.

Ryerson, of the Welland Collegiate
Lnstitute staff, I)r, Russel Hartry of
Fort Francis: MIF, Maud Hartry, of
Seafo,•th public school staff, and Mrs.

AT A FOWL SUPPER
.\ gentleman of the "cloth has in
mind these day, that "good deeds
remain, all things else perish." 'During
the week he attended a fowl supper
at a distant point; upon entering he
happened to notice that he was the
only one of a group, there in a semi-
official capacity, who waived his pre-
rogative and paid the admission. .It
therefore affords hint some amuse-
ment to 'find that a report of the
event in a daily paper of the locality
mentions the names of the others,
while, by some mischance, his name
was completely overlooked.
FORMER RESIDENT DIES
!Pester Slpain died an Saturday while
on a visit to his daughter at Detroit
and his .remains .were brought to God-
enich_ for interment. Mr. Slpain, who
was in his Nth year, was horn at
Marmara, (Hastings County, son of
Patrick Spain and Alvina O'Meara,
who came from County Tipperary,
Ireland, Deceased was a cooper by
trade and came to Huron County
when the salt industry was 'flourish-
ing, settling at Seaforth. I.n 1909 .he
moved to Goclerich and had since
worked for the Western Canada Flour
Mulls and Goderic'h Salt Co. Surviving
children are Johan Spain of Goderich,
From whose honkie the funeral will be
held: Cornelius of Fort Erie, Joseph
of Detroit, and the Misses Mazy,
Margaret and Muriel, Spain, also of
Detroit. Also two sisters, Cassie and
Vida, and one brother, John, all of.
Galt. The funeral ewes held on Tues -
clay at IGodenich, with interment in
Colborne R, C. Cemetery. Anhon,g

ACKMO W LEDGM•ENT
The committee in charge of, the
shipment of provisions to the Canad-
ian l'Vest wish to thank most heartily
all those who so generously conitrib-
utdd towarcls this most deserving
cause. Two refrigerator cars were
colm'pletely filled at Seaforth and des-
patched to rhe southern part of Sask-
atcheeran one for distribution at Min-
ton and the other at IH'azlett. Il:n addi-
tion, some sixty bags of potatoes, to-
gefhcr with some pumpkins and
maple syrup were sent to Brucefield
and shipped in a car being fi'l'ed at
that point, The distribution at the
destination is under the direct super-
vision of the Commissioner, Bureau
of Labour and Public Welfare, Re-
gina.
MA'MM'OTH CARROT
Mr. John A. Stewart brought to
The News office on Friday a table
carrot grown by Mr. John Abell, Sea -
forth, that for Size and appearance has
few, if any, equals. It weighs 4%
popuds, Mr. Stewart was of the op-
iotl that this carrot is of the "Tory"
variety', and says Mr. Abell would like
to hear from any other bachelor whit
call beat this.

115, after about six weeks' illness,
Since her -marriage in r11996,- Mrs.
O'Leary had resided in Winnipeg.
Dorn in 'Tuckersnllth 64 years ago, a
daughter of the late David Donovan,
she came at an early age to Seaforth.
Before her marriage she lived in 'Sa-
ginaw, Mich., for eight years. One
sister, Mrs. Albert IForttete of town,
survives of a family of five. A sister,
Mrs. James Dalton, predeceased 'ter
three years ago.

The meeting opened by singing
hymn '11711, after 'which tihe Lord's
prayer was repeated by all, at the
Tuesday evening gathering of the
Anglican Young People's Associa-
tion in the parish 'hall of St• Thomas'
church. The minutes were then read
by the secretary. Arrangements were
made to go to the banquet at Clinton
on Friday, Nov. 2ed. (Other 'business
was discussed and a short program
was
given by Jean iDuugey and
Grace Krauter, Bob Archibald and
Canon Appleyard gave a short ad-
dress on their trip Ito London at
which they attended a banquet, ad-
dressed by Sir 'Henry Drayton. The
meeting Closed with the ,benediction
!Next meeting will be held on Nov-
ember 12th.
TUCKERSMITH,
On Sunday, Oct. 31:st, the death
took place at Scott Men1'orial Hospi-
tal, Seaforth, of Betty IIouston, the
youngest daughter of the late 3Mr. and
Mrs. Samuel Houston of Tuckers -
mills following a seven, weeks' illness
follawiug a serious 'operation: Miss
Hous'tan had been ill for some time
and on July 30Itl1, in company with
her another, .sister and brother motor-
ed to IJonc1on with a neighbor, Mir. T,
Hodgert, to consult a specialist, when
they inet with a motor accident just
north of London. Mrs, Bimetal] was
fatally injured, and Miss Houston ne-
ver fully recovered from the effects of
the accident. I3ers is the third death
in the family during the past few
months, her father having passed
away on June 4. Mies Houston was
a member of the Egmondv'ille Church
and was of a bright and cheerful dis-
position. Site is survived by ane. hr0-
ther, An,lrevv Houston, of Tucker -
smith, and sister. \lis'. Prances Rous-
ton, of the Brantford teaching staff.
The funeral was hu'1 on Tuesday.
