'.there is evidence on eery hand that Barley and dark tobaccos, corns. beau,, sugar beets and- ' many other craps have made better growth on soil which was ploughed last fall. A demonstration such as this c.h'ould stimulate effort to plough as much land as po eible this fall. Our lighter flee -cured tobacco soil;, however, are an exception to this practice, due ,to their shifting nature, Tests conducted over a period of years on the Dominion Experimental Station at Hiarrow show that better yields of .tobacco and' corn are obtain- ed on fall ploughed' land, especially in dry seasons. 'This difference is attri- buted principally ;to the greater con- servation of moisture in fall ploughed soils. 'The physical condition of the heavier soils as well is often intiprovied by fall ploughing. Fall ploughing also offers a better distribution of labor. It is generally conceded that ;the ,e'arl- ier fall ploughing is better so far as conservation of 'moisture is concerned. However, pilhe n,ew seedling 'on the farm should ibe carefully inspected following a season such as th'e one just ,experienced, (before a well 'eetab- lishedf hay ilbeld is ploughed' under. 'Such an inspection may protect a farm' against a hay shortage next year. This past 'season has also shown the advantage 'alfalfa has over 'clover or nt'ixed bey' in a d'ry year. Alfalfa is our ,heaviest -yielding, •c'hea'pest, and surest hay crop. !Iu, addition, it is one of our best soil -builders, and ,should play an important role on .every fa.rnt; A good' stand is easily obtained if. good 'drainage, inoculation, and 'fair' fertility are provided' in soil' with suffjcienit lime.
