ST. COLUMBAN WINS
St. Calumnban advanced into the
group finals for the Ontario Cup
','t'lien they beat Kitchener Rangers
1.-0 at St, Colsnrban Friday evening
to win the round 503. Before the
lat•Igcst crowd of the season that
cheered every move made by a home
player they held out the highly tout-
ed' Rangers who noade a great come-
back .in the second half only to run
tip against a defence that spared no
quarter and asked for none. After
Stapileton had seared the only goal
of the game early midway first half
Kitchener reorganized their line up
but failed to break through Malone
and 5. I'raIver who turned in one of
their best games of the season,
(Kitchener won the toss and set the
Suints to face the ,sun and play up -the
slope. In spite of these conditions the
Saints carried play right to the Ran-
gers defence do the opening move 0i
the game. Three tines :in as many
nth -lutes the "Irishmen” were right in
on top of the Rangers' goal only to
shoot high aver the bar.
t\ brief attack by the visitors was
stopped when McQuaid. robbed Fife
as he was going through the centre,
Sutherland gained ground on the right
wing only to have Holland rob hint as
he was about to cross the bald. A long
clearance up field by 'Malone gave
Stapleton a great chance to get ihs
wards going and they worked in close
to the Rangers' goal where McLeod
was forced to give a corner t0 keep
out the fast travelling Saints. Noth-
ing resulted from the corner kick and
the visitors took up the attack
through Bootie on the left wing.
Beattie put across a well placed cen-
tre but Miles running out gathered
the ball. Wye tripped him as he was
about to clear, the ganie being stop-
ped for a free kick to the Saints,
Midway thro''h the first half, the
Saints took the lead much to the de-
light of the large crowd present:
Stapleton gathered the hall from a
beautiful combination play by Flan-
nery
nery anti 1rcIver and getting the ball
well ander control shot %cell out of
Tlesinllnt s reach into the top corner
ei tate goal. The cheering that greet-
d this goal was loor and loud, play
being restarted several minutts be-
fore it finally died 'lows. St. Colum -
hat should have scored again a min-
ute later hut tap leton's .h,t hit the
foot ,f the upright.
Sutherland got in dutch with the
crowd when he started talking hack
to the referee and claiming that Hn:-
lan-1 was pushing loin into touch in-
stead of using his. shoulder, Nothing
resulted.
Beattie and Wye were the mast
dangerous of the Rangers' attack
and Wye looked to have the goall at
his mercy when he broke through
but with only hides to beat he shot
hard Inc the corner but the Saints
goalie pulled off a remarkable save
with one ,hand from a shot that looked
sure to score. Again the crowd went
cheering mad and a. great .rally by the
Saints forwards got them to score
ing position again Gut as McCarthy
shot the bail between the uprights he
was pulled for "off -side," the goal
not being allowed,
'The Saints continued to press to
the interval but failed to add to their
one goal lead. Score, half time, Kitch-
ener Rangers 0, '.St, C'ohtnvbau 1.
Kitchener reorganized their for-
ward line at the start of the second
half with the result that they had a
little more of the play than in the
first half. McLeod who took over the
centre forward position worked 'hard
to get his forwards going but they
were met by a stubborn defence that
refused to let' them got into a shoot-
ing position, Every attack sent up Sy
the visitors was smashed before they
got very fat, the Saints half and full
backs turned itt a sterling game in this
part of the game. The viotory by the
Saints over the Rangers is dueto
them. Never letting the Rangers real-
ly get going they put up a stonewall
defence that gave Miles in goal a very
easy time, having few and far be-
tween shots ,to clear„After a long Kit-
chener attack that ,finally melted out
the Saints took the play to the other
end and withwildcheering urging
them on, broke through the Rangers'
defence only to have the final shot hit
the cross liar and cane out into play.
Flannery got possession of the hall
and taking a first time shot just
grazed the upright, with no nets to
;top the ball it looked as though the
ball had passed between the posts but
a final check- up in which -Flannery
admitted he did not score eased pres-
sure on the Rangers' goal.
At the other end Beattie canto
close with a fast low• shot that passed
about a foot outside the post. Sev-
eral aminutes were spent by both sides
in a continual march up and down
the touch line with throw-in's. Suther-
land again raised- the crowd to fun
making cheers when' he persisted to
play around with the ball in which he
got the worst of it time after time.
Kitchener staged a final rally in the
last few minutes of the game hut
could not score, the Sainte running
out winner, ht the only goal c,rel
