Hockey.—The St. Columban 'Green
Shirts defeated Tuckersmith on Sat-
urday evening in the first game of the
season for the McMillian Cup. The
score was 6 to 4 for ,St. Columban.
For the winners, McQuaid got two
goads, Miles two and Moylan and
Kerslake one each. Line-up for St.
Columban, goal, Pethick; defence, S.
Malone, E: 'Kerslake; centre, Mc-
Quaid; wings, (Hart and Lane; subs.,
Moylan, 'Miles, ,MoCarthy and J. Ma-
lone. The boys meet the Egmond
ville team in the first game this Sat-
urday evening.
The C.W.L. are holding a euchre
and social evening in the parish hall

itors with friends here and have re-
turned to Kitchener, accompanied by
Miss Grace Moylan.

son regret to learn of her being con-
fined to the hospital through illness.

intimated this wiotrld be his last
session letter as their minister.
The residence of the Late Mrs. Thos.
McQuaid, on Goderich street, just
west of Church street, has been pur-
chased by Mrs. Ada 'Janette Reid,

Death of George M. Strong. --Death
came as a happy release from a malig-
nant disease to George M. Strong, at
the home of his son,in-law, Mr, Har-
vey Moore, early Sunday morning,
The tate Geo. Strong was horn on
:the sixth concession of Tuckersmith,
January, 1Sd5, oldest son of the late
'George Strong and his wife, Eliza-
beth McCulloch, He attended the
Red School House when Mr, Samuel
Hicks was teacher. 'Until a quarter of
a century ago this school house serv-
ed as Township Hall and was a fam-
iliar landmark in the community.
With the exception of one season
spent in North Dakota, the deceased
,lived in his -native township where he
was highly esteemed as a friend and
neighbour. Gifted with a generous
heart and a helping hand, c'ou'pled
with a good-natured wit and abundant
common-sense he became popular
with ail who shared his companion-
ship.During his early years he served
he various roles as thresher, carpen-
ter, hotel -keeper and for the past
twenty years as farmer on the Kippen
Road, His passing will be a distinct
loss to those fortunate enough 'to
have experienced his genuine worth
and true character. 'Ian 1893 he was
united in marriage to Mary Kyle,
eldest daughter of the late William
Kyle and his wife, Isabel McEwen.
Besides a son William G. on the staff
of Glashan Intermediate Sohdol,
Ottawa, a daughter Mrs. Harvey
Moore °Isabel), a niece Mrs, Ivan
Forsythe ((Eva), the late George
Strong is survived by one sister,
Mrs. Norman Hearn (;Elizabeth) of
Norbhvi'lle, Mich, and three brothers,
William and Robert of Seaforth, and
James of Vancouver, B.C. The fune-
ral services conducted from Egntond-
ville United Church by his pastor and
spiri•tual adviser, Rev. C. A. Mal-
cnlut,M:A., were largely attended.
The six pall -bearers, chosen by the
deceased just prior to his death, were
Mc vs, R. Kennedy, H. Chesney, F.
Upshall, I. Moore, J. Finlayson and
E. Forsythe. The numerous floral
tributes included tokens from Glash-
an Intermediate Schoo'i :Staff ' and
'Pupils, Public School Men Teacher's
Club and Chalmers United Church
Sunday School, Ottawa, Interment
was made in Maitland Bank Ceme-
tery where the last sad offices of re-
spect were paid the memory of a de-
voted husband, generous father, kind-
ly brother and faithful friend.

Mrs. Thos, Purcell has returned
home after convalescing in Scott Me-
morial Hospital, Semforth, since the
9th inst. Thos. wears a snile, it's a
boy.
A large number fnom here attended
the annual meeting of Elle McIKillop,
Logan and ,Hibbert Telephone Co. on
Wednesday to hear the reports and
election of officers which went off
quietly as the company is still in
sound standing even though many are

The regular nton'thly meeting of
the W.M.S. and Ladies' Aid of Caven
United Church, Winthrop, met at the
Roane of Mrs, Wm, Somerville, The
president, Mrs. Andrew Patrick, oc-
cupied the chair. Mrs. Robert Mac-
Farlane offered prayer. During g the
bossiness session a social was arranged
to be held. Jan. 239th 'to pay the ex-
pense fund of the W.M.S. Mrs,,Fer-
gus Bullard gave a talk on "Missions
in Honan, China." Circle No, n had
charge of the devotional part of the
!meting with Mrs. Hugh ,Alexander
presiding. Scripture lesson was read
by Mrs. Sta'n'ley GGarnhanz, after
which Mrs, Rob't McCulla led in
prayer. Mrs. Gilbert Smith gave a
reading entitled, "New Year's R'eso-
lutions."'Tose topic was taken by Mrs,
James Hogg. Sentence prayers were
offered by Mrs, Oscar Cuthill and
Mrs. Arthur Hendersons. Meeting
closed with prayer by Rev. 'M'r, Mor -
mw, after which the ladies of Circle
L served lunch.
The Y.T.S. met Tuesday evening
Jan. 116th, with Edith Millen presid-
ing: The meeting opened by singing
hymn 443, followed with prayer by
,Norine Little. The minutes of the
previous 'meeting wore read and ad-
opted. The meeting was then opened
for 'business. It was decided that we
have a V'alen'tine social. The ,S'crip-
lure reading was read by :Margaret
Montgomery, 'followed ,by the inter-
pretation of the Scriptures which was
taken by Arthur Alexander. Hymn
4318 was sung. The topic, "What Can
We Do About Poverty and We'alt'h,
was taken by Jack Habkirk. The of-
fering was then received. The meet-
ing was closed by singing hymn '153.
All repeated the Lord's prayer in un-
ison.
A Scotch :Social will be ,held at Ca-
vell .Church, Winthrop, under the aus-
pices of the WM.'S, on Monday ev-
ening, 'Jan, 29Th. •

plan.
The Week of Prayer was observed
in Bayfield on three evenings of last
week by the three congregations. On
Tuesday evening, Rev. R. M. Gale,
assisted by Rev. W. G. Bugler of the
Anglican Church, took charge of the
service in Knox Presbyterian Church.
Rev. Mr, Gale gave the address and
spoke on "The Church Universal."
On Wednesday evening the service
was held in St Andrew's United
Church, the Rev. Mr. Bugler address-
ed the people on 'National and Inter-
national Life," The pastor, Mr. Gale,
assisted. On Thursday evening, Rev,
Dr, Duggan, of Clinton, in Trinity
Anglican Church on the subject of
"Prayer." The 'Rector, Rev. W. G.
Bugler and 'Rev, R. M. Gale assisted
Members of the three choirs united in
the praise service, The meetings were
well attended and enjoyed by all and
regret was expressed by many that
they could not be continued. We brunt
that rich blessing may attend the ef-
fort put forth.
There has been little or nothing go-
ing on .here this winter in the way :of
entertainments except dances. The
Orangemen and the tBactminton Club
and early in the season the Legion
had quite successful ones. Others
have been given by private individu-
ais. One of the best was given Friday
night of last 'week by Donald Mtrr-
t'ay with music by the Olde Tyme
Orchestra, They purpose having an -

A quartette composed of Mesdlames
J. 13. McLean, E. Butt and Messrs.
J..B, McLean and A. Bell sang a very
pleasing number '"Sweet Hour of
Prayer," at the morning service in
St. Andrew's United 'Church on Sun-
day morning last, Rev, E. F. Chand-
ler delivered a very earnest message.
There are several young ladies and
gentlemen from this community in at-
tendance at the Short 'Courses which
are put on this month ('January) in
Zurich. These courses are under the
supervision• and direction of vhe De-
partment of Agriculture and prove
very excellent training for those hav-
ing the opportunity to attend. The
teachers and leaders are the hest that
can be obtained and are teaching
many useful and practical methods to
the young people.
Quite a number from the village at-
tended the funeral of the late George
Strong of • Tuckersmith which was
held from ,Egntondvible United Church
on Tuesday afternoon to Maitland
Bank cemetery, Our heartfelt sym-
pathy is extended to the bereaved
widow and fancily.
The many friends: of Miss Jennie
Chesney, who has not been very well,
are glad to hear she is able to be
out again.
Miss 'Bary ,Dayman of 'Granton is
visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Dayanan and other friends on the 2nd
of Tuckersmith.
.Mrs. Robt, :Elgie entertained a few
neighbours to an enjoyable social
evening on Monday night.
Miss !Beatrice 'Dayman who has
been spending a couple of weeks with
her cousin, .Miss Veleta 'S'quires of
Granton, has returned 'home.
Mr. and Mrs,' Hugh Love of Stanley
township entertained a number of
friends to supper on Wednesday ev-

funnies in the 116 -page Comic ;Section

veals the strange experiences which
befall a young hero and his sweet-
heart on a new pl'ane't 'to which they
are shot on a rocket plane. 'The De-
troit :Sunday Tinges 'has more comics
in calor than any other Detroit news-
paper.

Mr. (Alex. 'Chesney is visiting at
the home of his 'parents for a few
days.
Mr. Will Strong of 'Ottawa was
here attending 'the funeral of his'
father, the 'late George Strong, who
passed away early ,Sunday morning,
at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H.
Moore.
Mr. John McDougall and son of
Cromarty visited ,an ,Sunday with M.
and Mrs. Jas. Upshall.
Quite a number in 'the vicinity are
laid up with bad colds.
ROXBORO.
The trustees of SS. No. 113 at Rox-
boro, have had a fine hardwood floor
laid in the sc'ho'ol and new doors and,
windows weatherstripped. The young
people of the section thoii'ght it g
grand opportunity to approa'c'h the
trustees for areal old time dance. The
trustees gave the required consent
and the stage was set for last Friday
night, It certainty was a success. The
music was supplied by Mr. and Mrs.
Irvin Agar and the Anderson -Plum-
tree ' orchestra. After singing the na
tio'nai anthem and thanking the trus-
tees and musicians, 41 dispersed in
the wee sma' hours, everybody hav-
ing had such a good time.

Mrs. Frank Bruce is visiting for a
few weeks with her sister at Dash-
wood.

University visited friends over the

ed the latter's father on Sunday,
We are pleased to hear that Mrs,
George Chambers who had the mis-
fortune to' break her leg while skating.,
is some better.

houses at his firm last Friday, A large
crowd was present.
Mrs. Ken MoKcilar is able to be
around again after her 'fall.

to Hamilton on Monday.

The regular meeting of the W.M.S.
was head on Wednesday afternoon,
Jan. 3rd, with quite a number pres-
ent with Mrs Bremner presiding over•
the meeting. We opened our ineeting
by singing •hymn, i5 1, after which we
had our Scripture lesson which was
.,taken from •P'salms 85:120, also Romans
8=116-7415 and our hymn prayer being
383. Miss Munro then read the tem-
perance paper. Mrs. Mustard, West
China, Miss •Edyth Bowey, Hanan,
and Mrs, Brock a devotional leaflet.
Three sentence prayers were then gi-
ven, after which we had the offering
and then the roll call. Our next meet-
ing will be held on Feb.''116th, the day
of prayer being observed on that day
and we hope for a large attendance.

The death 0f one .of Brueefield's
highly esteemed residents, Mrs. Chas.
Wright occurred about 8 o'clock on
Wednesday morning, Jan. IJ, after
an extended illness. '':it's. Wright.
who prior to her marriage to 'her late
husband. was Jean Ferguson, was in
her 84th year. She leaves a family of
six sons and two daughters: John, at
home; James, Mitc!heil; Robent, • of,
Hulte'tt; Charles, McKillop; Alex.,
Mill Road, Tuckersmith; Will, of
(Seaforth;` Mrs. Chas. Riley, 'Brussels;
'Mrs. Wm. Hill, Stanley. She was
predeceased by her daughter who liv-
ed

al will be held at her late residence
on Friday, Jan. :13th, to the Maitland
Bla'n'k Cetnbtery, Seaforth. Mrs.
