Women's institute Hear .
Interesting Debate -
The October meeting of the Hensall
Wornunt's Institute was held at the
home of Mrs, D. Walks and Mrs, A,
W, Kerslake on Wednesday eveuing
with Mrs. W. A. MncLaren co -
hostess, This warts t special meeting
for the Grandmothers, and it was well
attended 'by members and guests with
sixty present. The president Miss
Gladys Luker presided ouch the 1118(1-
ing opened by singing tin, "Ode" and
silver Threads Among the Gold,"
Mise Greta l.(ammi( at the piano, The
Lord's prayer repeated in unison was
followed by the minutes and the roll
call answered by 'Senietlting My
Ui andmoi her Missed." The business
was taken up and ills. Minnie Sang-
ster was appointed a delegate to at-
tend the convention to be held in
Hotel London on November 2nd, 3rd
and 4111. It was revealed that 964 lbs.
of jam had been made by members
and friends of the Institute for ship-
ment overseas. The 11101(o "Let Us
-Grow Lovely Growing Old" was most
ably given by 11Irs. Itobl, Simpson.
Mrs. G. M. Drysdale gave as very
humorous demonstration "unpacking
Grandma's Telescope and the aero -
pack used by the modern Miss," Mrs,
Sltirray and Miss Maclllwaine (lis -
played the contents showiug the com-
parison. The highlight of the pro-
gram was an interesting debate "Re-
solved that the present (lay has noth-
ing to offer that the pioneer lacked."
The speakers for the affirmative side
were Misses Beryl Phaff and Audrey
Dinnin and the speakers for the uega-
live side were Mrs. tDr,) A. R. Camp-
bell and Miss Annie E, Consitt; both
displayed the attire of the pioneer's.
All the speakers took their parts Most
ci'edit.ably and the Judges were Mrs.
C. Cook, Mrs. W. B. Cross and Miss
Greta Laramie. The affirmative side
were the winners, Misses Betty
Mickle and Eleanor Cook played a
piano duet. Mrs. Minnie Sangster
gave the recipe and Mrs. Fred Beer
eerrent events. The November meet -
inn will be held at the home of Miss
Florence Welsh and the December
meeting at the hone of Mrs. Robt.
Cameron. Miss Gladys Luker moved
a hearty vote of thanks to the host-
ess, co -hostess and all taping part,
after which Mrs, W. A. MacLaren was
called forward and presented with
crystal goblets. The presentation was
made by Mrs. Thos. Sher•ritt and the
accompanying address read by Miss-
Luker.

the o%erseas Christmas boxes. Ar-
rangements are made for packing
these boxes on Monday night, Oct.

who volunteered to make cookies,
also the packing committee and
friends, kindly note the date. Any-
one having Seaforth and Exeter pa-
pers, comics and magazines such as
Liberty, MacLean's, Readers Digest,
etc., please leave same at the town
hall for this date. A number of em-
pty candy boxes, 1 lb. size are also
needed. Anyone may leave sane at
the hall.
Further announcement will be
made for the .Hallowe'en masquer-
ade orchestra dance to be held in the
town hall, Hensall, on Friday even-
ing, Oct. 29th, sponsored by the Hen-
sall Girls Dance CIub. An outstand-
ing orchestra will be there and
prizes will be awarded for costumes.

The October meeting of the Arn-
old Circle of Carmel Presbyterian
Church was held at the hone. of Miss
Beryl Pfaff on Tuesday evening with
a good attendance. The president,
Mrs. Melvin Moir presided and the
meeting opened by singing "Art
Thou Weary?" followed by prayer
by Mrs, Norman Stanlake,'Following
the roll call minutes and business,
1(Iise Sally Manson gave the topic on
Indians which was very interesting.
The many friends of Mrs. James
Wright of Kippen regret to hear she
suffered a fall on Saturday with the
result of a fractured leg. Mrs.
Wright was attended by Dr. Steer
and removed to Scott Memorial Hos-
pital, Seaforth, where an X-ray was
taken.
The Hensall Women's Institute

donation of 928.25 which has just
been handed in for the overseas par-
cels, Tickets were sold on a Wool

the Dept. of National Defence, that
Sgt. Fred W. Snmllaoombe, Royal
Canadian Artillery, of Guelph, now
serving overseas, has been awarded
a Canadian Efficiency medal. He is
't son of Mr. and Mrs.. Fred W.

The branch of the Red Cross So-
ciety of S.S. 10, Hay, held their first
fall meeting at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Elgin Rowclife on Monday ev-
ening. Plans were, made for the"fall
and winter seasoand the lucky ti-
cket drawn for the hooked mat don-
nted by Mrs. Garfield Broderick.
The proceeds from the sale of tick-
ets was over 825 which will be used
to purchase suitable gifts for the
overseas boxes. The winner of the
mat was Mrs. Elgin Rowclife.
A very enjoyable evening was
spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Rarold Parker on Tuesday evening.
The occasion was the birthday of the
former's mother, Mrs. Enoch Parker.
A family dinner marked the occa-
sion with about thirty present after
which the evening was spent in
games and a social time. Those at-
tending were Mr. and Mrs. Gordon
Parker, Hensall, Mr, and Mrs. Robt,
Keys and family and Mr. and Mrs.
Russell Keys and family and Mr.
Leonard Keyes of Mitchell; Mr. and
Mrs, Wm, Parker and family, Mr.
