THE FRENCH NAVY'S SACRIFICE: dOUTTLED WARSHIPS IN TOULON HARBOUR
French sailors performed a bitter task when to thwart German attempts to seize the main French Fleet, they
scuttled their ships in Toulon harbour. The damage was enormous; much. t it can be seen from RAP reconnais-
sance photographs, while destruction in several cases took place within the ships themselves and would therefore
be invisible from the air. Thus, the upper deck of the battleship "Strasbourg" is not submerged, but there are
signs that the vessel has settled and is grounded. The wreckage of the ships - estimated at 60, including battle-
ships,
attleships, cruisers, destroyers, coutre-torpilleurs and submarines - may make Toulon entirely useless as a harbour.

attack would be costly in men and materials, he switched a strong forth
round the Matntata Mountains to join the assault on the enemy's dank at Ell

A dozen or so people stood outside
the flight office, most of them in fly-

showing how well yellow stands out
against grey. Their Aldis lamp flash-
ed "Use emergency." Of course. The
instructor's having kittens. As if he'd
forget to use the emergency, Pug put
his head round the corner. He was
not enjoying himself: Who does,
stooging round and round, trying to
get the undercart down? He and Pug
nodded, and his left hand unhurried-
ly reached for the emergency and
fired it.
The wheels stayed up.
Johnny felt sick with hunger, angry

"Your late tea."
He remembered then: and his wide
