Distinguished Flying Cross was .presented to Flight Sergeant B. C. Paige of
Bridgeport, Ont., (2) after he safely navigated a Hudson bomber and its crew
to its base, The aircraft flew so low in au attaolt on enemy shipping that one
wing -tip clipped a pt'ojeetiug, rock, disabling the starboard engine, rendering
all instruments and turret unserviceable and extinguishing the lights, To
Wing Commander Thomas C. Weir of Toronto and Winnipeg (3) went the
Distinguished Flying Cross for bringing a disabled bomber. and its crew to is

County Road Costs
Must Be Cut by $80,000
There is not likely to be any new
construction on the County of Hur-
on's 400 -Mile highway system this
year, and even the maintenance pro-
gram may have to be curtailed, owing
to a drastic reduction in the amounts
on which the Ontario Government
will pay the usual subsidy.
At the January session the County
The Western Five provide Canadian radio with one of its most interest-
ing anomalies, The programme is devoted to the songs of the wide open
spaces. The music comes out at breast -neck speed and is played by as
smooth a pack of sophisticates as ever steered clear of a rodeo steer, The
shrine of their activities is swank studio "A" at CBC's handsome emporium
in the Chateau Laurier, Ottawa. Featured, lett to right: Oral Scheer, vocal-
ist; Woody 1ii11, guitarist; Gammie, Howard, leader -arranger -clarinetist; Gene
Cloutier, violinist, and Red Calloway, the trumpet player who triples in xylo-
phone and string bass. The Western Five go into session Tuesdays and
Thursdays at 6 p.m
Council passed a bylaw calling for a
total read expenclithre in 1942 of
3150;000. Ordinarily the Province
would pay approximately half of
this, The bylaw was sent to the De-
partment of Highways for ratifica-
tion, A few days ago it was returned,
with the original figure of 9180,000
reducers to $100,000, plus a warning
that no subsidy will be paid on new
roads—only onmaintenance,
Reductions in township programs
are even more marked. Goderich
township has been reduced' from $6,-
000 to $3,000, Stanley from 98,000 to
$3,400, Tuckersmith from $9,000 to -
93,800, and Hay from $8,000 to $3,200.
In- some townships, notably Stanley
and Goderich, damage done to cul-
verts by the heavy rain of March 16
is said to be as much as $2;000. This
was not taken account of by the Gov-
ernment in reducing the amount no
which the subsidy would be paid and
it is feared money will not be avail-
able for ordinary worst.
Recently the. county woad commis-
sion toured the County highways and
founts much storm damage to cul-
verts. On the Clinton -Bayfield high-
way a bridgeabutment was washed
away, making a detour necessary,
