Miss Alma Finnigan has 'success-
fully passed her examinations for
nurse registration, having trained in
the Stratford General Hospital,
Misses Margaret and Ernestine
White returned to Toronto on Mon-
day after having spent two weeks
with their mother, Mrs. M. White,
Miss Florence Fowler of Bluevale
is the guest of Miss Clara Pinkney.

Mr. and Mrs, W. Alexander visited
recently with their son, Mr. and
Mrs. Norman Alexander of Londes-
boro.
Miss Mary Westlake of Exeter is
visiting with Miss Irma Ferguson.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Linden and Verna
of Denfield and Mr. and Mrs. J. Car-
ter and family of Clandeboye and
Mr, and Mrs. R. Parsons and Mr. F.
Ryckman of Hensall visited recently
with Mr. and Mrs. Archie Parsons.

Carol of Centralia visited on Friday

home of Mr. and Mrs. W. Homey.
W.M.S. Meet.—
The W.M.S. met on Friday after-
noon for their first meeting of the
year at the home of • Mrs. Allan
Johnson: - The meeting opened with
the call to worship by' Mrs. H. Mc-
Murtrie who presided. Hymn 570 was
then sung. Mrs, McMurtrie read sev-
eral passages from the Bible, after
each a verse of hymn 182 was sung.
The offering and roll call were then
taken. Mrs. W. Alexander then gave
a. talk on the Bible .which was very
interesting. The topic was given by
Mrs. J. Henderson after which Mrs.
Grant led in—prayer. Hymn 260 was.
then. sung and the meeting closed
with the • Mizpah benediction. A
dainty lurch was served by Circle 1.
' Miss Margaret ,McIver,' daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Peter McIver, has
entered St. Marys Hospital, Kitchen-
er to train a sa nurse.

Mrs, George Clarke—
The death oocunred in Clinton
Hospital of Mrs. George Clarke, of
Varna, in her 75th year, after two
months' illness of heart condition -
following' a stroke, on Friday morn-
ing at half past ten. She was a dau-
ghter of 'the late 'Gabriel Elliott and
Elizabeth McCullough Elliott, and
was born in Goderich Township on
October 22, 1867. In 189E she mar-
ried George Clarke, and they farm-
ed in Stanley Township. Eight years
ago they retired and have 'during
that period resided in the village of
Varna. Mrs. Clark was a member
of Varna United Church, a good
wife and a good mother. The funer-
al was held from that church on
Monday ab 2 p.m, following a short
funeral service at Ball's undertaking
parlors, Clinton, at 1 p.m. Rev.
Reba Hern, pastor, conducted the
service at church and graveside, as-
sisted by Rev. John Graham of St.
John's Church. Besides the husband
there survive two sons, Melvin E.
Clarke, Seaforth, and William G.
Clarke, Babylon Line, Stanley, and
six grandchildren; also five sisters,
Mrs. J. W. Reid, Varna; Mrs. J. E.
Harnwell, Goderich; Mrs. Ida Fee,
Seaforth; Mrs. John T. Reid, Lon-
don, and Mrs. Edwin Chuter, Varna.
Interment was in Bayfield Cemetery.
The funeral was one of the largest
ever held at Varna. The pallbearers
were nephews of Mrs. Clarke, Mer-
vyn Elliott, Dr. Harvey Reid (Tor-
onto), Wilmer Reid, Wilfred Chuter,
Harvey Chuter and Percy Johnston.
Among those from a distance
were Mrs. Annie McNaughton, Mrs.
J. T. Reid and daughter and son
Miss Pearl Reid and Eric Reid, Mr.
and Mrs. Wolper, Mrs. Fred Carter,
Miss Doris Chuter, Mrs. Thos.
Chuter, Mr. Elliott Chuter, all from
London; Dr. Harvey Reid of Tor
onto, Mrs. Emily Evans, Oshawa.
The meeting of the Varna W.M.S.
was held at the home of Mrs. David
Stephenson. We sang the hymn "Tis
Winter ' Now,' and 1VIl's. McClymont
led in prayer. We then sang "Happy
the Home When God Is There." Re-
ports were read from the various
secretaries. Treasurer reported $164.-

164:19 had been raised. This amount was
well over our allocation. The chapter'
"The Canadians Are Coaling," was
taken up from the study book by Mrs.
D. Stephenson, Mrs,' Lee McConnell,
Mrs. W. Johnston and Mrs. Fred
Reid. Mrs. S. Keyes read a piece
about welcoming the strangers. We
closed the meeting by singing, Lord
While For All Mankind We Pray, and
prayer by Miss Hern. A social hour
was spent and a vote of thanks ten-
dered the hostess.

Mrs. Oliver Yallop of Toronto at-
tended the funeral of her grandrno-
ther•, the late Mrs. Brooks of Clinton.
Mr. Keith Westlake is buss re-
modelling his new funeral home
which he recently -purchased from
Mr. Lee Hoffman in Zurich,
Mr. John McClinchey of Holmes-
ville is spending a few days with
Mr. John Wild.
Mr. Melvin Greer has purchased
Mr. Joe Foster's farm on the Blue
Water Highway,

seriously ill but is improving,,

cently with friends in Hensall.
Mr. A, E. Jones of Brandon, Man.,
is, spending some time at the home
of his sister, MI'. and Mrs. William
Davidson, and also his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. John R. Jones and other
relatives.

Falls spent the week end at the home
of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edw.
Yunglnlut.
Mr. William Carter has returned
from Owen Sound ,where he judged
the poultry show. He reports that the
entries were numerous and of excep-
tionally fine quality.

Mr. Frank Graham of the RCAF of
Windsor attended the funeral last
week of his aunt, Miss Margaret
Kelley of Morris Township; also Mr.
Malcolm and his sister Miss Malcolm
of Galt.
'Mrs. J. H. Sellers of Morris Town-
ship is visiting friends around
Walton.
Mrs. Edgar Hollinger and son
Charles, who has been here owing
to the illness of her father, Mr. C.
Pollard, has returned to her home
in Hamilton.
Mrs. Orville Habkirk of Wingham
is visiting Mrs. W. C. Bennett and
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bennett this week.
Miss Edith Ennis of Toronto spent
the holidays with her parents, Mr,
