OFFENCES .LND. rENAL' Ifs
Every person who sells or offere for
sale by the bag any of the articles
mentwued in subsection No 1 of this
Act shall, in case any bag of such veg-
etables sold or offered for sale by him
does not contain at least the number
of Dominion atatidard pounds required
by the said subsection, be liable, on
summary conviction, to a fine not
exceeding twenty five dollars for the
first offence, and for each subsequent
offence to a penalty not exceeding fifty
dollars,
While 90 pounds has been the legal
standard for a bag of potatoes in Can-
ada for a number of years, and has
generally adopted in moat, districts, it
has only been this season that the Dom
inion Fruit Inspectors are charged with
enforcing the Act. Any one, whether
grower, jobber, wholeealer or retailer,
wno sells or offers for sale potatoes in
bags containing leas then 90 pounds is
liable to a fine of $25.
The lack of uniformity in the weight
of bags of -potatoes has bean a griev-
ance for years as in many oases bags of
potatoes sold as being of standard
weight proved, when actually weighed
to contain as little as 74 pounds and
in some oases even less, . While in most
cases there was no wilful intent to de-
fraud, yet the result to the consumer
is the same,
Phan many retailers receiving bags
weighing less than 80 pounds instead of
the full 90 required by law have mad&
the evil worse when selling by the
peok. Instead of giving 15 pomade to
the peek many purchasers have found.
that theyireoeived only 12, With the
weight of a bushel of potatoes as 60
pounds there is no excuse for giving
less than 15 pounds to a peck.
