Flartry, of Scaforth, son of Mr. Wm, Hoary, who like other brave Canadians, reverted, in order to get to France writes home this inter- esting letter, Frauoe Nov, i ri, 1017 Dear Mother;— They aay its the 10 of the Month but what day of the week I have no idea. This is tho.first chance I hove had since my last letter and as you ' will see I'm back in Franoa and mighty glad to be there too, L have a very gond billet for tonight -at least ao I'm looking forward to a good sloop in a oomfortable bed, the first I have had for some time. You will know from the papers ex aotly where we were and what we did up there so there is no use 111y dwelling too numb ou it, Our bunch did not actually go over the top but we held the line alter the adri uoe which is emelt worse. I never dreamed that shell fire could be so terrible or so con- centrated. A thousand times 1 thought 1 was gone but -wasn't even kindled. One shell either killed or wounded every man 'around me and al- tltough1 was buried I never got a sin- 'gle scratch. Trenches there were none except what we made ourselves and they were simply holes in the ground which fined up every so often with rain It rained incessantly and if you stood still for any length of time yon were bogged up to the knees and had to be pulled ont. Nobody tried to dodge shells you simply had to keep on going and trust to luck. The mud which was our worstenemy in '000 way was our salvation in another,_ 1 saw shells drop within six feet from men and never hurt one of them. The mud seemed to smother the shrapnel and covered everyone with mud instead of shrapnel,' If it had been dry ground 1 don't see how anybody could have dome out alive. Every moruing and evening both sides would lay down a barage any- where up to a mile in depth and when all the guns got going yon would cer- tainly think that the end of the world had come, Besides the noise of the shells exploding there was a continual roar of shells going over above our heads that would almost remind one of Niagara Falls see I am attempting to deroribe things which I didn't intend to do be- cause its absolutely impossible I thought Vimy Ridge was the worst I had ever seen but for countless miles of nothing but shell holes, desolation and horrors the salient has it beaten a thousand ways, Dead Huns were everywhere but they don't bother me its only your own wounded and seeing them die that gets your nerve. I've seen eo many dead now that they don't affect lite any more Pin only concerned with the living. I've had so many narrow escapes that I'm convinced that the Good Lord doesn't intend to let rife dim just at present and I've come through 80 D11.1011 now that I think 111 manage to come through the rest, No matter how bad things are in the future they cant be any worse than what I've al- ready been through. I'm going to try to cable yon to- morrow but doubt very much if I shall be able to so. I got a letter from Dad while we had 'a breathiug space on our trip north and you can imagine it felt good to hear from civilization You were asking about sending parcels, over here. Tobacco is always wel- come oaken and pastry usually spoil anger can be obtained here much easier than in England, In faot their is no Shortage of it here. As Major Hays Bays if a man has money he can buy nearly everything youcan send him in a box but of course there is always the pleasure one derives from getting e box, Your affectionate son; R. R, H. Miller's Worm Powders destroy worms without any inconvenience to the ohild, and eo effectively that they pass from the body unperceived. They are not ejected in their entirety but aro ground up and pass away •through the bowele:with the excreta, They thorough ly cleanse the stomaoli and bowels and Ileave them in a condition not favorable to the pests and there will be no reviv- al of them, JUBILEE SERVICES The Jubilee bald last Sabbath in connection with First Presbyterian Church was of a most interesting and impressive nature, The iseather being propitious, the ebnroll was crowded to its utmost oapuaity, The eloquent sermons preached by Rev W. Union Victory Canada never saw a more vigorous election Campaign than the one closed on Monday. Both sides felt sure of winning and every effort was made to bring out a large vote and it was sun, easeful. Locally a very large vote was east, In some Divisions every available elector cast his er her ballot, There was very little excitement around the streets but a steady work seagoing on all day which toldiu the final results The election of Mr Monier was a serp. rise to tunny, even of the Unionists themselves who had heard of the strong German vote being given for Mr Mo. Millan in Hay Township, The major. ity of 68 will doubtless be increased by the soldier vote, The Government is sustained by 48, a good working ;major- ity, SOUTH HURON Aiern er McMillan Seaforth... ,,,...48 .........,........ ,......., Olintou 253 .............. ..... ...
