K Birks, pastor of Morrison Street Methodist Chula!), Ho had jest litiialied rolling the driveway to his garage with a email !EMI] roller when he gave an exclamation and fell over. When a doctor examined him he was dead. He was born in Mount Forest fifty six years ago, and thirty three yeare ago was ordained to the ministry, He held pastorates at Tharnesford, Dur- hatn, Teeswater, London, Stratford, Seaforth and Dundee, Besides his wife he leaves four sons, Dr. W H Birks, a missionary at Chung Ohow, China; R 1' 'Toronto; A P and D E Niagara Falls, ARIVISTONG-WARD On Tuesday noon, May 26, at the Presbyterian Manse, Thodford, Ont., occurred the marriage of Anna Mar. gavot Ward and Robert Armstrong of Seaforth, Out, , Rev. James Foote otyioating. • The bride, who was unattended wore` a beautiful gown of Alice blue poplin - The many Seaforth friends of the bride presented her with a puree of gold, and the groom's gift to the bride was a piano. Mr. and Mrs, Armstrong left Thed forts for a trip to the Pacific Coast, Farmer's Club A lorgelyattended meeting of farmers was held inthe Tewn Hall on Monday evening. After vigorous speeches dy Mr. Halbert, President of the united Farmers Association and Mr. Moran the secretary of the same Association, it was decided to form a Branch here, After appointing Direotore a stirring address was given by Mr McKenzie of. The Farmers Co-operative Association of the West. Consnpt@on The members of the two great par• tine are pretty well in accord with Pre- mier Borden's Consription Bill. There will, no doubt , be differeucef of opinion as to details, but as a whole it fits the e ituation, and it is so 'recognized by the leaders of thought in both the Liberals and Conservativeorgauizationo, At the momentwe need something like seventy thousand reinforcements in France, and by tho volunteer system there are not sufficient man coming forward daily to make up for the wastage at the front, not to speak of filling the de- pleted ranks. This bill is going to bring about a new political alignment, at least temp- orarily. On the one baud will be Con- scription Liberals and Conscription Conservatives, and on the other the kickers, made up chiefly from the Province of Quebec French, and the various Socialistic bodies, Of the latter they are chiefly foreign born in any event,.and no one is going to pay muoh attention to them. Just...how. strong and active the opposition of Quebec to conscription will be remains to be remains to be seers. It may all pass ovete like a eummer showery an d again, it may not, Here and there an Englishapeaking member of Parliament is expected to kick over the traces and join the antis, These objectors+ are :already out with their lune of argument which consists in calling for a con- scription of wealth. Tnie sounds well but means little. What do these people want conscripted, and how? If Hie all so beautifully indefinite, just like other Socialistic arguments. if itr a excess profit; then it seems to rue that Sir'Thomae White hag pretty well attended., to it with the recent businesetax on excess profitsIf these gentlemen will indicate to the Finance Minister where there are any eouroes of revenue left untouched, lie would no doubt have the little matter attended to without delay, The'debate on the Ooneripition Bill ata it wanders on its way tbreugh to its' final . adoption, with or without amendments, will be follow. ed with intense interest, not only throltghout tide country, but in the United States and among the. Allies on the far side of the Atlantic). From now on nntil the passage of the Bill, argument and debate upon the snbjeet is elaarly the riglit of every citizen, provided that there are n0 traitorous prenouuoemente. After its passage it will bo the duty of every good citizen to see that it is adhered to to the very letter, and all agitators who wonitl frustrate the will of the people as represeeted by Parliament should bo dealt with as the law pro- vides. The United States has shown us an exoalient example in this matter, Over them agitators ore at ones arrest• ed and jailed, This fa war time and no time for loose talk, rebels and renegades. Protection for . Crop Crop protetion means crop produot- ion. Canada loses over one hundred million dollars worth of her staple crops every year through the depredations of insect poste. A large portion of this Toes oonld be prevented, As we cannot afford to lose the smallest portion of ourgrain and other food crops during the present critical period when the produotion of food is of supreme im- portance, the Dominion Department of Agriculture is making every effort to prevent, so far as possible, losses due to ine_at pests. Crop protection must go hand in hand with crop produotion, Insect pests are not usually noticed or reported until they have caused con- siderable damage, Therefore it is urg- ed that the closest watch be kept on all crops for the, first appearance of any insect .petits or damage. Immediately such damage is observed steps ehould be taken to control the outbreak in its ncipient stage.. If the peat or method of control is unknown specimens of the insect and lte injuriee should be sent at once to the nearest of the following ex pert assistance; Tho Agricultural Col- lege, the Provincial Departments of Agriculture or their local District Re- presentatives, the officer in charge of the nearest Dominion Entomological Station, or direct to the Dominion En tomologiet, Department of Agriculture, Ottawa for examination; and advice in regard to control measures will be furnished without delay. Lettere and packages up to ounces in weight may be mailed to the Dominion Entomolog- ist "Free" but postage will be required on lettere and specimens sent to the other sources of advice mentioned. Do not delay reporting insect out- breaks or sending inquiries; delay; may involve serious loses that could others wise be prevented, Write immediately or telegraph if the outbreak is serioue Olean farthing, the securing of vigorous growth in yonng plants and good cul- tivation are the best protective meas- ures against insect attack, K ep all crepe constantly under supervision for the first appearance of any dampgein order that it may be oheoked with out delay.
