Exeter Postmaster
As stated in last week's testa Mr, VV,
J. Carling was recommended as poet -
master in Exeter, but when the re.
commendation was presensed to the
Postmaster General at Ottawa, he
stated that an order.in•council had
been passed by the Government mak-
ing it impossible to appoint a civilian
to a position in the oivil service when
a returned soldier was au, applicant
and 'qualified for the position, Mr.
J. 3, Kerner, M. P, therefore, knowing
he was conforming to the will of his
executive immediately recommended
Mr. William Russel a returned soldier
non of Mr, William Russel of town,
Mr, !darner then notified Mr, Russel
and the secretary of the of the execu-
tive, and at the time of writing the
matter stand» there. The appoint-
ment may be gazetted even now, or in
a few days, ora few weeks, Mr' Russ-
ell, in case he is appointed, will make
a thoroughly satisfactory postmaster
He is competent and trustworthy and
snot: all appointment would be pop-
ular,
We understand that a similar case
has developed in St, Marys, where a
civilian, Mr, Lancaster wan appoint-
ed as postmaster, but the appointment
hr.e been - up botanist) of soldier
applicant.
WASTE MATERIAL
Papers, Rags and Rubbers are
Sources of Revenue when
Saved by Householders
It is an old axiom that "some people
grow rich on what others throw away;
This is 'especially trete ill regard to
waste paper, rage and old rubbers.
In the past year much progress has
been made in the eating of waste pap-
er, but as yet a very small proportion of
this material is available forreolamation
Many reports of encomia in this n ork

Another discard is old rubber mater-

of collecting boxes, ie easily saved,
One institution recently placed at its
door a box to receive old rubbers, and
was surprised to find how soon it earn-

If Canadians were more particular
in saving the Dente, as represented by
waste, many more dollars would be
available for war loans and the cost of
living would also be materially reduced
