111y Dear Mother
Just a few Imes to let you know
ant getting along nicely now. The
weather ie fine and very warm. Since
the nice warm weather has come we
have lots of fun playing ball and other
games.
There is a large aerodrome quite
close to us and the aeroplanes have
battle praotise which is very attraotivo.
They have a small machine tied with a
wire away out at the back or sometimes
ever or under them whatever it maybe
thou they shoot at it with machine
gone. It looks nice to see the fire fly-
ing out of the guns away up in the air
it is wonderful to see them practising.
We have a very fast machine now the
l ~ speed is 125 miles an hour there were
five went over here to -day they were
ep so high they looked like butterflies,
they must have been going to make
an attack aomewhere for they were out
of reach of gun fire. We have a large
depp, the Silver Queen, it is for guard-
ing the Channel for submarines, .they
Ceti see 65 ft below the water so there
will not be many Rube get through the
Channel at that rate. There was quite
a time over here for a while. There i
was some word of a German fleet raid-
ing the coast so the troops ell mobolie•
ed along the sea -front for proteotlon
but they haven't appeared yet, It
world be terrible if snob happened but
it hi all quietened down.
Hope when this reaohos you I will
be well and ont and hope you all at
borne aro enjoylpg the beat of health.
With kindest love, I are
Your loving son

From France
Dear Friend
Your parcel of socks and comforts
to hand and will give George his when
ho returns, It is certainly a treat to
us fellows in France to get .a parcel
and it cheers a soldier up to know that
the people at home are thinking of
him, The socks are fine and fit mo
Splendid.
I saw a lot of the boys the • other
night 0 Neely, Burt Muir, Colon, and
Fred Taylor, '
In pioking up a Oanadian paper the
other day I saw an account of our trip
over written by a Oapt Oann, and I am
more than surprised at any paper print
ing snob an article. It gave some
people the idea that the boys of the
161st. wore drinking and gambling the
whole way over
Now I will, tell you that for -a --bunch
of soldiers the fgist,00ndnoded them-
selves a lot better than is pictured in
Oapt, Canna letter. I will admit that
there were a few drinking and gambl•
ing but not a fraction of the extent
mentioned in the Oapta. letter.
I am writing this not only in the
defence of the Battalion, but as re-
gards myself and others, whom I know
have never indulged in anything which
would bring dishonor or dierespeot to
the Battalion.
The people need not worry abont
their boys over in France as every one
has to look out for himself. We are
'hot going to put ourselves in danger
till the neeeaeary time Domes, and then
it will not be' our fault if we do not
come out on top.
Do not listen to any rumors about
any ono being hit as no one will know
till the official telegram is sent to Me
Mende, Wo are all in 6 1C condition
not the same tie if we were at home at
ail, bat we do not expectanything like
that,
